About
Janet Melrose
I am interested in the objects we leave behind. Left in a drawer, on a shelf, in the back of the wardrobe. As Artist in Residence with Remake Scotland I have access to donated objects, textiles and furniture from which I make drawings, paintings and 3 dimensional pieces. I am interested in the changes which take place to objects and the homes they once belonged to, when left vacant. This work belongs to a larger body of work which I call ‘Dust is an Archive’.
Charles Moore in his introduction to ‘In Praise of Shadows,’ Junichiro Tanizaki, writes of the need to dwell. Of connecting to a place which belongs to us and to which we belong to. This sentiment informs my work and connects me to the homes of my grandparents.
I am a member of The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, Scottish Society of Artists and Visual Arts Scotland.
My work is held both in Private and Public collections and has been the recipient of a number of awards.
