Maui County’s Exceptional Trees

Is there a special tree or group of trees that you believe should be protected, and allowed to increase its positive impact on our environment?

1. For a tree to be deemed Exceptional in Maui County, an Exceptional Tree Nomination Form must be filled out.
https://www.mauicounty.gov/DocumentCenter/View/132341/Exceptional-Tree-and- Palm-Nomination-Application Link opens in a new tab.

2. Contact the Department of Parks & Recreation for how to submit nomination applications for review by the Maui County Arborist Committee: Phone (808) 270-7230

3. The Arborist Committee reviews the Exceptional Tree Nominations, recommends qualified trees to the County Council to be designated “Exceptional”, and protected by County ordinance. – The Arborist Committee communicates with the owner regarding the Exceptional Tree nomination
– The Owner signs the Acceptance Form and returns it to the Arborist Committee

4. Arborist Committee forwards the nomination through the Mayor to the County Council for Acceptance & Protection.

What are “Exceptional Trees”?

A tree or stand or grove of trees with historic or cultural value, or which by reason of its age, rarity, location, size, esthetic quality, or endemic status has been designated by each County’s Arborist’s Committee as worthy of preservation.

Community members can submit Exceptional Tree Nominations.  Qualified trees are reviewed by the County Council, and qualified trees are added to the list of Exceptional Trees which is maintained in the County Code:   https://www.mauicounty.gov/DocumentCenter/View/115180/Ord-4908

For more information:

Guidelines to nominate a tree(s) or palm(s) for exceptional tree status are found in The Maui County Planting Plan, chapter 5-section 5.102.  Chapter 5 also has information on the Exceptional Tree Program. https://www.mauicounty.gov/DocumentCenter/View/11115
