About Golden Beginnings

We are a 100% volunteer-run, non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming Golden Retrievers in the Greater Houston Area.

Giving Goldens a Second Chance at Forever Since 1999

Golden Beginnings is a volunteer-powered Golden Retriever rescue that gives unwanted, neglected, stray, and displaced dogs another chance to find a family to care for them.

Based in Houston and serving the surrounding area, we provide loving foster homes and veterinary care, while working tirelessly to place every dog in a safe, permanent home.

Over the past 26 years, we’ve rescued thousands of Goldens and partnered with other rescue groups to make sure not a single dog falls through the cracks.

We’ve Changed the Lives of Thousands of Goldens Across Houston

Golden Retrievers are our passion, and our mission is simple: to give them a second chance at a happy, secure life. We act as a safety net for every dog, relying on our amazing network of volunteers and foster homes. We work with towns, shelters, and families to ensure that no Golden is ever left without a place to go.

Along the way, we’ve received awards like the Starfish Award from the Golden Retriever Club of America for our rescue work during Hurricane Katrina. In 2008, two of our rescued Goldens received G.R.A.C.E. Awards at the GRCA Nationals – a moment that made us incredibly proud of the work we do!

We approach every surrender with compassion, understanding that life sometimes gets in the way of a loving home. For adopters and foster families, our support continues long after applications are approved. We rely on your generosity and fundraising to cover expenses like veterinary care for Goldens in need, and every dollar goes directly to the dogs.

Caring for Every Golden

We welcome Golden Retrievers of all ages and backgrounds, including playful puppies, older dogs, expecting mothers, and those who are sick or injured.

Each dog receives a thorough veterinary check-up upon arrival, along with ongoing medical care and emotional support. It’s all about helping them get healthy and regain the joy and personality that makes them uniquely Golden.

The People Behind Our Cause

The volunteers who take care of the day-to-day operations of Golden Beginnings are a team of everyday people – just like you! We all live in multi-Golden households and share a deep love for the breed. While we're busy with our own jobs, we're united by a shared passion for helping Goldens in need.

We aren't formal professionals in animal behavior or veterinary care, but we work closely with the experts to make sure every dog gets the care they need.

Together, we've created a rescue that feels like family.

Board of Directors

Like all of our volunteers, our Board of Directors shares a deep love for Golden Retrievers and a commitment to helping dogs in need. Together, they help guide the mission and future of Golden Beginnings.
