Three properties, three counties, one shared instinct: get outside, get thoroughly cold, then get warm again. Walk Berkshire's lanes from Elcot Park, the edge of Rutland Water from The Barnsdale, or the South Downs Way from Alfriston, then come back to a fire that's already lit.
Dogs are welcome at all three, so there's rarely a reason to leave anyone behind.

By the Thames, autumn looks a little different. The Mitre trades muddy boots for a floating sauna on the pontoon, dinner at 1665 Brasserie as dusk settles over the water, and a room waiting upstairs when the evening's done.

Three countryside spas, each built to make the most of an outdoor season. Whatever the weather's doing, there's a warm way through it.
The Barnsdale, Rutland
Set on the edge of Rutland Water, Signet Spa's heated pool stays at a steady 28 degrees whatever's happening outside, with three wood-fired hot tubs and a sauna pod close by. Afterwards, the Club House serves wild mint tea picked straight from the kitchen garden.
The Alfriston, South Downs
The heated pool here stays open right through the year, and there's a wood-fired hot tub that feels particularly good once the air turns cold. A sauna pod and GAIA treatments round things out, all within sight of the South Downs.
