Since 2016, the umbrella has been a recurring feature of Kristofersson's work and serves as inspiration and demarcation in terms of material and color choices.
By reusing the polyester material and using the patchwork technique as a construction method, connections between now and then, material and context, identity and group belonging are investigated, among other things.
The starting point for the later production has been an investigation of the umbrella as an object, its function and its components. The umbrella's main purpose, to be a functional object that protects us from the force of nature, generates associations with functional clothing and equipment for survival in nature.
The works take physical form and penetrate the room like backpacks and boxes. The umbrella's skeleton and technical construction are turned inside out and form trusses, similar to both traditional weaves and supporting constructions in tents.
Kristofersson's artistic works have taken their starting point from an interest in the functional qualities of textile materials and the associations they can carry. Or perhaps rather the meeting between these materials and what happens to them when they are taken from nature (already broken and discarded) and meet an art context and take on new forms.
The works always bear traces of use or abuse, while they are put together with great care and with an interest in craftsmanship.
