Statement
I am an interdisciplinary artist working with sensation and the human body through textiles and digital media. My pieces are wearable sculptures and immersive installations that serve as devices for exploring cognitive functions, metaphysical relationships and mental health. Central to my practice is the goal of cultivating compassion, primarily through the tactile nature of my work and insistent use of crafting traditions and techniques. These traditions and techniques are rooted in cultural multiplicity stemming from my Egyptian-Levantine culture and upbringing as a first-generation American. More recently, I use diagramming as part of my process, using 3D computer modeling and CNC fabrication concepts, to assist in visualizing the spaces in which identity overlaps and collective experience happens.
Bio
Emmanuelle Chammah is a sculptor and designer based in Atlanta, GA. She holds a Master of Architecture I from Tulane University, earned in 2007.
Her early wearable artworks were exhibited and performed in New Orleans, LA and Brooklyn, NY. Following a Digital Sculpture Residency at the School of Visual Arts in NYC in 2010, she worked in New York and California for agencies in architecture, art fabrication, theater, and fashion. While building her art practice and working in the cultural arts, she developed expertise in community-based art.
Currently, she continues her radical use of fabric in various forms, including wearables, tapestries, and sculptures. She has completed residencies at The Hambidge Center in GA and the Penland School of Craft in Penland, NC. Her work has been showcased at the Oceanside Museum of Art, the Atlanta Contemporary, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, where she received the Juried Award for her piece "Super El-Ayn" in the Gathered V show. In 2022, her wearable pieces were featured in the "Coined in the South" exhibition at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC. That year also marked her launch into installation art, with immersive textile installations at Shedspace at Whitespace Gallery in Atlanta and MICRO gallery at Westobou Gallery in Augusta, GA.
