Why we built ShadowingEnglish
ShadowingEnglish started with a simple daily habit: pick a video, listen to one sentence, say it back, repeat. Shadowing worked — but doing it by hand meant hunting for the right video, pausing and rewinding a player dozens of times, and never really knowing whether your pronunciation was right.
So we built the tool we wanted. Every video is split into sentences you can loop one at a time, at the speed you choose. When you speak, AI listens and scores each word and each sound, so you know whether it was the vowel, the ending or the stress that went wrong. Paste a link to almost any English video and it becomes a lesson in seconds.
We are a small team based in Hanoi, Vietnam, and ShadowingEnglish is now used by learners all over the world — on the web, on iPhone and on Android.

Yes. Shadowing videos is free and unlimited on both the website and the mobile app. Premium is optional and raises the daily limits on AI features.
Do I need to download an app?

No. ShadowingEnglish works fully in any modern browser on desktop and mobile. The iOS and Android apps are optional and use the same account.
Do I need an account?

You can practise as a guest. A free account saves your progress, streak, saved words and pronunciation history across devices.
What levels is it for?

From complete beginners (A1) to advanced learners (C2). Videos are graded by CEFR level and grouped by topic, so you can always find something at the right difficulty.
Can I practise with my own videos?

Yes. Paste a link to a video with English speech and ShadowingEnglish splits it into sentences for shadowing. If it has no captions, AI generates a transcript.
How is the pronunciation score calculated?

Your recording is compared with the expected sentence sound by sound. You get a score for every word and see which individual sounds were mispronounced, plus feedback on rhythm and intonation.
