Police take man into custody after manhunt in Rensselaer County
WEST SAND LAKE, N.Y. (WNYT) – New York State Police said they took a man into custody around 7 p.m. Wednesday after a manhunt in Sand Lake. Police said the man they took into custody was 39-year-old James Cooper IV.
Police previously said that Cooper was armed and dangerous. The search prompted school lockouts and a road closure on Route 351.
Before he was taken into custody, police said Cooper was last seen in the area of Route 351 and Chain Mountain Way and was last seen wearing green pants, sneakers and no shirt.
Police said Cooper was believed to be on foot with multiple firearms. They urged anyone who sees him to call 911 immediately and not approach him.
Parents told NewsChannel 13 that students from elementary school to middle school in Averill Park Schools were placed on lockout during the search. They said dismissal happened about 40 minutes later than normal.
Trucks and other vehicles were being turned around in the Sand Lake Town Beach parking lot because of the closure.
Police said charges are currently pending for James Cooper IV.
