Retro Gamer Escapes from Monkey Island 21 Sep, 2026 / 1 comment

Retro Gamer has published another of their retrospectives, this time on Escape from Monkey Island. And even though it’s short, it has some juicy quotes from Sean Clark (and some less juicy ones from Mike Stemmle).

Sean recognises Mike's concerns about Monkey Kombat but doesn't share his sense of regret. "I'm in two minds on it. At that time, we believed that we were the last graphic adventure, and Monkey Island game, that Lucas would ever make so we felt like we really had to pay off on the monkey head. We can go a little scorched earth with the lore because there's nothing behind us.

"We loved the idea that the monkey head was actually the top of a giant monkey robot. Everyone on the team was giggling a lot and thought it was hilarious. It sort of gained its own momentum. I don't apologise for it the same way that Mike does. I think it was fun and there are some really great gags in there but it's probably the part of the game that feels least like Monkey Island. It feels more like a Japanese cartoon."

I never thought Monkey Kombat was that big of a deal, but either way – I really do like that Sean doubles down on it.

Finding Retro Gamer in the US is easier said than done – it’s a UK publication – but you can grab it from pocketmags. It’s issue 289, and it’ll run you a cent shy of $5. (That was the “official” link, but tightwad Jason found it for a mere $4.29 over at Magazines Direct.)

Update – Huz points out that Magazines Direct actually is the official link. I don’t even know. Spend your money where you want.

To gently push back on Remi's characterization of the retrospective as short, it is a proper four-page spread. Maybe I'm just stressing that because I'm so glad/surprised to see that the torch of old school magazine features is still being carried by anybody.
