Foot scanner use cases

Use cases

Foot scanning for footwear fitting, rental and insoles.

Retailers use Volumental foot scanning wherever fit decides the sale: kids' footwear, run specialty, ski rental, hockey, golf, hiking boots and custom insoles. One 5-second 3D scan, measuring length, width, arch height, instep and total foot volume, powers all of them.

What the scan measures

The scanner captures both feet in about 5 seconds: length, width, arch height, instep height and total foot volume, including left-right asymmetries. Those measurements drive a brand-agnostic recommendation matched to what the store actually stocks, and every scan becomes a fit profile that travels with the shopper across the store's locations and online.

Rental staff use foot measurements to narrow down boot options. Running stores use them to guide shoe size and width selection. Kids’ stores remeasure growing feet to check whether it’s time for a larger size.

Dig into the scanner itself: how 3D foot scanning works.

Kids' footwear

Children may struggle to explain how a shoe feels. A foot scan helps staff check size and width and guide parents toward a suitable fit.

Run specialty

A foot scan measures both feet in 3D, helping staff choose running shoes by size, width and shape rather than relying on the runner's usual size.

Ski and snowboard rental

A quick foot scan gives rental staff measurements to help select a boot size, so guests have a clear starting point for trying on boots.

Hockey and skate

Skate sizes differ from everyday shoe sizes. A 3D foot scan helps staff narrow down skate sizes and models before the customer tries them on.

Golf

A foot scan helps staff check foot size and width before suggesting golf shoes, giving shoppers a starting point for finding a comfortable fit.

Hiking boots

A foot scan helps staff choose hiking boot sizes and widths to try, then check toe room and heel hold with the customer's walking socks.

Custom insoles

A 3D foot scan captures the shopper's foot shape for custom insole production, allowing stores to offer insoles made for the individual.

Which retailers use in-store 3D foot scanners?

Run specialty stores, ski and boot-fitting shops, hockey shops, outdoor retailers, golf retailers, kids' footwear stores and insole-led specialty stores. 3,000+ stores in 60+ countries run Volumental scanning, from single-door specialty shops to national chains.

Consistent measurements help staff make fitting decisions they can trust. Researchers at Texas A&M University–San Antonio tested Volumental on adults and found excellent consistency across repeated scans. Read the study.
