The Vintage Fashion Guild™ (VFG) is an international nonprofit membership organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of vintage fashion. Founded in 2002 by a group of vintage sellers, it created an online reference library that became widely used by collectors, researchers, historians, and sellers. This body of work, presented through the Guild’s first website, established what remains a trusted resource for vintage clothing.
Today, the organization serves both vintage fashion professionals and the broader public. Its educational resources, developed through the volunteer scholarship and expertise of members, form an extensive reference library used around the world.
Membership has grown steadily over the years, leading to the formation of a dedicated membership committee. Qualified sellers and other vintage fashion specialists are invited to apply through our online application form. See the Apply page for details. You can also learn more about membership benefits on the Join page.
In addition to professional membership, we offer an informal option for non-members to participate in our Public Forums, where registration is free. The Guild believes that informed buying and selling communities strengthen the vintage fashion industry as a whole. All visitors have access to the VFG’s educational resources, which are continually updated and expanded by a dedicated volunteer staff.
The Vintage Fashion Guild maintains a number of specialized reference guides used by collectors, researchers, and vintage sellers worldwide:

Fur Resource: A descriptive and visual aid to help identify fur, exotic skins, and plumage.
Lingerie Resource: Terms and examples of vintage lingerie.
Fashion Timeline: An historical overview of fashion trends from the 1800s through the 1990s.
Fabric Resource: An A-Z glossary of fabrics and fabric terminology, including guidance for determining fiber content and identifying “mystery” fabrics.

Wedding Resource: Three hundred years of wedding garments arranged chronologically.
The Vintage Fashion Guild is a leading online authority on vintage fashion — fostering knowledge, understanding, and appreciation through its international community of members.
The Guild pursues this mission by:
• Protecting the interests of vintage fashion vendors and encouraging professional practices.
• Promoting ethical behavior and professional standards of expertise among members in order to reinforce buyers’ and collectors’ confidence that the age, style, details, and condition of merchandise are accurately represented.
• Raising awareness of vintage fashion and providing a forum that brings together buyers, sellers, collectors, and enthusiasts.
• Establishing and maintaining educational resources available to both buyers and sellers.
• Creating a positive environment that enhances the public image of vintage clothing.
• Encouraging the conservation and wearing of vintage fashion in order to preserve the history, availability, and survival of vintage clothing. The VFG discourages the practice of modifying or altering intact vintage garments to suit contemporary trends.
• Promoting vintage clothing as a viable, attractive, and environmentally responsible alternative to conventional fashion.
The Vintage Fashion Guild is incorporated in the United States as a nonprofit 501(c)(6) membership organization serving vintage fashion professionals and the broader vintage community.
