GATLINBURG — The city is searching for a new chief for its fire department, just over nine months after David Gray took over the position.

Gray confirmed himself that he was no longer with the department in a brief conversation with The Mountain Press, but declined to comment further on the decision.

His letter of resignation was written Monday and indicated he would resign effective immediately. It didn’t mention his plans.

“Serving the City of Gatlinburg and leading the dedicated members of the Gatlinburg Fire Department has been a tremendous honor,” he said.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such committed firefighters, city employees, elected officials, and community members in protecting and serving our residents and visitors.”

Despite the abrupt departure, he said he would assist in the transition.

Gray took over as chief in January, following the retirement of former Chief Charlie Cole.

He had previously served as assistant chief with the Knoxville Fire Department.

Gatlinburg Public Information Officer Seth Butler also confirmed Gray’s departure.

“We appreciate Chief Gray for his service to the city and the fire department during his tenure,” he said. “We wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”

Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Brandenburg will serve as interim chief, Butler said.

Brandenburg has served with the Gatlinburg Fire Department for 43 years. He was appointed as the assistant fire chief in 2018, shortly after Cole was appointed as chief.
