Opusmodus is a creative composition environment for exploring music through algorithms, symbolic representation, analysis, notation and sound.
It keeps musical thought and computational processes connected, allowing ideas to be generated, transformed, examined, heard and developed into complete scores within one integrated system.
Compositional ideas rarely begin in only one form. A piece may emerge from a notated phrase, a numerical sequence, a rule, an analytical observation or a sound. Opusmodus was created to keep these forms connected while the music develops. Rather than separating programming, analysis, playback and score production into unrelated stages, Opusmodus brings them into one working environment. The composer can move repeatedly between musical intention, computational process and audible result.
Opusmodus is built on Common Lisp and OMN, composers are not restricted to a fixed collection of features. Built-in methods can be combined with personal functions, libraries and reusable compositional processes.
Computational tools remain directed by the composer’s musical decisions.
Code, OMN, notation, MIDI, graphics and sound remain part of one workflow.
Processes can be tested, heard, compared and refined immediately.
Built-in methods can be combined with personal functions, libraries and compositional systems.
Apply the system to different musical languages, working methods and creative objectives.
Create personal functions, libraries and compositional tools within the Opusmodus environment.
Examine, document and preserve every stage of a computational composition process.
Develop musical code and methods that can be refined, shared and applied to future projects.
