Age Concern, together with the CHB Older Persons Network, is hosting a free community event to mark International Day of the Older Person on Thursday 1 October.

The event will be held at the CHB Municipal Theatre and will include morning tea, spot prizes and entertainment.

Mayor Will Foley said the day is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the contribution older people make to Central Hawke’s Bay.

“This year’s theme, ‘The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives’, is a timely reminder to consider how we support older people to live healthy, connected and fulfilling lives in Central Hawke’s Bay,” Mayor Foley said.

Bookings are essential. To reserve a place, phone Age Concern on 06 858 9158 or email chb@ageconcernhb.co.nz.

Dee Withers, Manager of Age Concern Hawke’s Bay, said International Day of Older Persons is a reminder that communities are built on the contributions of people of all ages.

“Older people are at the heart of our communities. They contribute through volunteering, caring for whānau, sharing their knowledge, and supporting others. This event is a way to say thank you and celebrate the positive impact older people have across Central Hawke’s Bay,” Dee said.

The event is led by Age Concern, alongside the CHB Older Persons Network, with support from Central Hawke’s Bay District Council, Jane and Molly – Property Brokers, and the Evergreen Foundation.

Coordinated by Council, the network brings together a range of organisations that champion a community where every person can age positively, and where older people feel safe, valued and connected.

As part of this focus on connection and wellbeing, Council will also support Cyber Safety Week in October with a drop-in session at Te Huinga Wai, where residents can get practical advice about staying safe online. Details will be shared on Council’s website and Facebook page.
