In 2026, the United States had the largest economy in the world, with a nominal gross domestic product of almost trillion U.S. dollars. China was the world's second-largest economy, at over trillion U.S. dollars. A distant third, Germany's GDP was approximately trillion dollars, followed by Japan at trillion and the UK at nearly trillion.
China tops the list based on PPP
Although in nominal terms the United States is still the world's largest economy, when adjustments for purchasing power parity (PPP) are made, China edges the United States as the world's largest economy. This adjusted figure better reflects the real volume of goods and services produced in a country by accounting for differences in local prices. On this basis, China's GDP was estimated to be trillion dollars in 2026, followed by the U.S. at trillion and then India at trillion.
Global GDP
Global gross domestic product amounted to approximately trillion U.S. dollars this year, compared with trillion dollars in 2025. Since 1980, the global economy has grown almost every year, with 2009 and 2020 being the notable exceptions when it didn't. The global financial crisis of the late 2000s resulted in the global economy shrinking by percent in 2009, while the COVID-19 pandemic caused a contraction of percent in 2020.
