| This page is an outgrowth of the
Top 150 Cities list from the previous incarnation of the
page. There are actually 4,518 cities in the database so
as to include small capitals and other tiny, but
important locales. The populations below are 2002 estimates
only, not official census data. The data is heavily
adapted and re-organized from the huge lists on world-gazetteer.com, citypopulation.de, and other printed almanacs and sources
when errors were found. These are fantastic resources
with info on many thousands more cities than will be
included in this listing. I don't wish to dispute the numbers here. Population counts of urban cores are notoriously variable depending on how and where one quits calling a cluster of cities a metropolis. So if you find your city is lower than you think it should be, please just take it with a grain of salt. A "Y" in the Photo column means I have a photo of the place in the city listings. Eventually I'll hyperlink everything in the top 500 so a click on the "Y" will take you to the most representative photo I have of the place.
