It was funded by an ERC 92Synergy Grant 2018 through the European Unionâs Research and Innovation 93Programme Horizon 2020, and lasted over 90 months (May 2019 through 94October 2026). 96Hypotheses.org</a>.</p> 97<p>The acronym DHARMA stood for The Domestication of âHinduâ Asceticism 98and the Religious Making of South and Southeast Asia. However, a 99comparative approach (not focusing only on Hinduism, but also 100considering Buddhism and Jainism) was fundamental to the projectâs 101attempt, in a broad range of regional contexts, to uncover the complex 102interplay of religion, state and society in premodern South and 103Southeast Asia.</p> 104<p>Recognizing that inscriptions are crucial historical sources because 105most of our knowledge of early South and Southeast Asia is based on 106epigraphy, the project aimed to explore, mine and diffuse these sources 107with digital humanities tools, and specifically to create an 108unprecedentedly large database of primary sources, in the framework of 109the <a href="https://www.tei-c.org/">Text Encoding Initiative</a> and 110its implementation for epigraphy called <a href="https://epidoc.stoa.org/">EpiDoc</a>.</p> 111<h1 id="about-dharmalekha.info">About <em>dharmalekha.info</em></h1> 112<p>That database has become the foundation of this platform and it was 113the principal deliverable of the ERC Synergy Project called DHARMA. 114Since the end of that project, the platform is being managed by a 115consortium which retains the same name.</p> 116<p>The database covers almost exclusively premodern sources in Indic 117scripts, to the nearly complete exclusion of sources in Arabic, Chinese 118and other scripts. It is strongly focused on epigraphic texts but does 119include a number of critical editions of manuscript-transmitted texts, 120as well as diplomatic editions of specific manuscripts. For the time 121being, only epigraphic texts can be queried by the search engine.</p> 122<p>All of the source files for the database are accessible via a 123dedicated <a href="https://github.com/erc-dharma">GitHub 124organization</a>.</p> 125<p>The structuring of our data and the design of the database were led, 126during the duration of the ERC Project, by Axelle Janiak, Dániel Balogh 127and Michaël Meyer. Their work involved, among many other things, the 128structuring of the GitHub organization, the drafting of guides to 129document our work, the integration of our XML source files into an SQL 130database, and the development of a search engine able to query the 131data.</p> 132<!-- PIs and shadow PIs 133HIs --> 134<h1 id="about-the-dharma-consortium">About the DHARMA Consortium</h1> 135<p>A formal consortium was formed to carry out the ERC project DHARMA, 136and it was led by Emmanuel Francis, Arlo Griffiths and Annette 137Schmiedchen as Principal Investigators.
