3Although it is not mentioned in the work, the survey took a suburban block outside Limassol, Cyprus as its case study, identifying every parcel of land that could be defined – somewhat subjectively – as “unbuilt“. The parcels are described in the field notes in one slideshow and recorded as short videos in the second, along with some (uncontextualised) information about the lot’s land use and value.

5As well as the location, the date of the survey is unclear – the videos show a timecode but not the year they were shot, and the material, filmed with an early HD camcorder, has a quality that makes it hard to date.

7The work can be read as a sociological study of the use of undeveloped land in Cyprus, or as a record of how Cypriot suburbia grows haphazardly based on field boundaries set by the former British colonial government. But it also asks the viewer to reflect on the motivations of its author in conducting such a detailed and almost absurd survey of “empty” space.

11Obwohl es in der Arbeit nicht erwähnt wird, diente ein Vorstadtviertel außerhalb von Limassol, Zypern, als Fallstudie, wobei jede Parzelle identifiziert wurde, die - etwas subjektiv - als „unbebaut“ definiert werden konnte. Die Parzellen werden in den Feldnotizen in einer Slideshow beschrieben und in der zweiten als kurze Videos aufgezeichnet, zusammen mit einigen (unkontextualisierten) Informationen über die Landnutzung und den Wert des Grundstücks.

13Neben dem Ort ist auch das Datum der Untersuchung unklar - die Videos zeigen einen Zeitcode, aber nicht das Jahr, in dem sie aufgenommen wurden, und das Material, das mit einem frühen HD-Camcorder gefilmt wurde, hat eine Qualität, die eine Datierung erschwert.

15Die Arbeit kann als soziologische Studie über die Nutzung von unbebautem Land in Zypern gelesen werden oder als Aufzeichnung darüber, wie zypriotische Vorstädte zufällig auf der Grundlage der von der ehemaligen britischen Kolonialregierung festgelegten Feldgrenzen wachsen. Aber es fordert den Betrachter auch auf, über die Motivationen seines Autors nachzudenken, der eine so detaillierte und fast absurde Untersuchung des „leeren“ Raums durchführte.
