534
Dr. Anokhi Kapasi joins us for a riveting chat that dives deep into the world of homeschooling and career mastery for moms in STEM! Picture this: a super-smart biomedical researcher, a talented consultant, and an entrepreneurial wizard all rolled into one, while also juggling the demands of homeschooling two energetic boys. Anokhi spills the beans on her journey from the traditional workforce to creating her own path with 'Solve for Mom' and her podcast, 'Science Careers for Moms.' She shares how she transitioned from being a full-time professional to a homeschooling mom, sculpting a life that merges both her passions seamlessly. The conversation is packed with insightful moments as Anokhi recounts the spark that ignited her decision to homeschool—her son advocating for it! Who knew kids could be so persuasive? Anokhi's anecdotes about the challenges and triumphs of homeschooling reveal not just the day-to-day logistics, but also the deeper emotional connections that blossom when learning happens outside the classroom walls. From the messy chaos of hands-on experiments to the 'aha' moments that make everything worthwhile, she illustrates how education can happen in the most unexpected places. And guess what? It's not just about academics; it's about nurturing a lifelong love for learning, which is something we all can get behind!

A gift from our guest: Free Career Alignment Diagnostic:

https://solveformom.com/career-alignment-diagnostic

A gift from our guest: Waitlist for the free Career Alignment Diagnostic (free assessment): https://solveformom.com/career-alignment

Dr. Anokhi Kapasi, PhD has built a portfolio career across biomedical research, consulting, and entrepreneurship. 555
Thank you so much for joining in us and as someone who worked in tech for quite a few years, yeah, tech can be a challenge for work life balance in general.

582
Yeah.

583

584
As we were figuring out when our pre chat, you know, it's one of those things that you are going to be one of those, one of these shows that is an inspiration for other people's like, I don't think I can do it. There's no way. I have this really busy career as high pressure, all this stuff. But you did it. So we want to start there.

585

586
But what was the inspiration to homeschool the boys? Let's start there and we'll kind of build into the rest of it.

614 00:02:37
615

616
Let's jump right in.

617

618Herb:
619 00:02:38
620

621
Jump right in. Bang.

622

623Kristina:
624 00:02:41
625

626
Okay, that's awesome. Yeah, let's do it. If you think I'm leaving anything out, just let me know. But let me retrace the steps a bit. So we started homeschooling.

627

628
I have two boys and we started homeschooling when my older Son was going to enter kindergarten. And what's really interesting is that he was the one who advocated it for himself. It was not on my radar, not on my husband's radar.

629

630
We actually fell in the trap of all those myths that you hear about homeschooling and just felt like that was not gonna be for us. But he sensed, my son sensed that something was not completely working for him in just whatever preschool experience he had.

631

632
Even though he went to amazing preschools and he had great times with his friends and played playtime and all that, it's just kind of like he knew something was not doing it for him, I guess.

633

634
And so the whole summer leading into kindergarten, his kindergarten year, I had already enrolled him into our public school, which, by the way, it was, like, right behind our house. So we just thought, wow, this is, like, such a great setup.

635

636
But the whole summer, he kind of just every day told us about how he really thought homeschooling was going to be the thing for him. And the only reason he knew about homeschooling schooling was because we're talking about, like, 20, 21 at this point for him. So he had.

637

638
He had experienced education at home, where we were doing STEM experience experiments every day and having, like, learning, but through play.

639

640
And so he's sitting there thinking, I could go there and see my friends for a little bit of time and then be bored the rest of the time, or learn from mom and dad and play essentially, and call that learning. Right. So he just really felt like that was the route for him. Granted, he was really young.

641

642Herb:
643 00:04:45
644

645
It sounds like I want to do that.

646

647
647Anokhi Kapasi:
648 00:04:48
649

650
Can we go back and try?

651

652Herb:
653 00:04:49
654

655
Can we go back?

656

657Kristina:
658 00:04:51
659

660
You know what's funny, though, is that so two days before the school year started, my husband and I obviously had a lot of conversations, and then we unenrolled him. And that is the start of our homeschooling journey. I have to say, maybe I'm not so proud of it.

661

662
This was maybe my ignorance showing up, but I kind of started the journey kicking and screaming. And this is where some of the stuff will tie in about what I do as a business. But I had to stop my entire career in order to make this happen.

663

664
Eventually it became a little bit of shuffling around of things, but I do research and consulting mostly for pharma in the space of drug safety and epidemiology and things like that. And so I thought very much that I was excited to go back to work full time in person somewhere as soon as my children go to school.

665

666
And that was not the case anymore with him homeschooling. So I had to readjust everything. And it just felt a bit like it was not necessarily my choice.

667

668
However, what turned out was that once we started homeschooling, and in my head, mind you, I still had not made that mental shift. I was thinking, nothing is permanent. We're going to do this for a month. He's going to hate it. I'm going to hate it.

669

670
And kids move schools all the time. I'll enroll him. You know, I just said, let's get this out of his system. And I ended up loving it.

671

672Herb:
673 00:06:36

678 00:06:37
679

680
It's amazing. And I just. I got my first. The first moment I got to witness that aha moment with him, then I was hooked. I said, oh, I get it.

681

688 00:06:57
689

690
I mean, I definitely like being stimulated intellectually. So I am a bit of a, you know, a learning junkie, I guess you would say. So. I like that.

691

692
I get that aspect in my career, however, I am learning things in homeschooling all the time.

693

694
And we can talk about, you know, our philosophies with homeschooling or whatever, but just to say that what I didn't understand until I started doing this for myself was that learning happens all the time, everywhere. And so I was learning.

695

696Herb:
697 00:07:33
698

699
So confining it to a classroom. Why would you confine it to a classroom and say, this is what learning is? It's like. No, once you start.

700

701
Once you start getting that love of learning, especially in a homeschooling, then everything.

702

703Kristina:
704 00:07:48
705

706
Exactly. And that's what we realize. And I realized that. And this will also play into our talk about balancing it all.

707

708
But I could run an errand, and that was a learning opportunity. We could throw in math or reading or whatever, just running errands. So the lifestyle became appealing almost immediately for me.

709

710

710And so then I knew that this was something that we were ready to commit to. But then I started to figure out, well, what am I going to do to. To be able to continue to work, you know, because it's an important part of my life.

711

712
It wasn't that necessary. I was forced into having to work. It's just that I wanted to always keep that a part of me and my life.

713

714
And so I started experimenting with how can I shape my career to work for my lifestyle? And that's when, again, I. Things flipped around for me where I realized, oh, I can actually design a career the way that I want.

715

716
To work for my life, and that is the basis of my company. Solve for Mom Now. And just to say that I hadn't actually thought about starting the company as I was doing this.

717

718
It was much later that I ended up starting the company.

719

720
But the thing that prompted the company starting is that all of my friends in town, the other moms and other adults I would speak to, would come up to me and start saying, oh, noki, I don't know how you do it all, because at this point, I'm working, I'm homeschooling, and, you know, just showing up in so many other ways.

721

722
And after it became a pattern where people would say that to me, and I was thinking, wow, this is weird, because I used to be the one who would look at other people and say, how. How is she doing it? All right? How's she so put together?

723

724
How she's so organized, and all of a sudden people are saying that to me, and that's when I'm like, oh, I can. I have something to share. So I started the podcast, which had a different name before it was Software mom was the podcast.

725

726
It has since changed to the name Science Careers for Moms. Took me a sec.

727

728
But when I started the podcast, it was a total passion project, and I was just sharing about how you can infuse critical thinking into your everyday lives.

729

730
As moms, we have more ownership in our lives than we realize, so it's talking about these things tangentially and using homeschooling as a good example. And then over time, I learned about maybe monetizing what I was talking about and then maybe niching in.

731

732
And as the entrepreneurial journey started solidifying for me, that's when I really came to what I do now, which is helping moms who work in STEM make career decisions very confidently so that they don't feel like they have to choose between career and. And motherhood. And, you know, we can.

733

734
I. I'm happy to go down any lane of discussion that you want to, but that might have been a little more background than you wanted.

735

736Herb:
737 00:11:13
738

739
No, that's exact. Yeah, that. No, perfect. That's exactly what we want.

740

741Anokhi Kapasi:
742 00:11:17
743

744
Exactly. Because you just busted the myth that so many moms have. It's like, I can't. If I homeschool, I'm gonna have to give up my career.

745

746
I'm gonna have to give up my job, the things I really love outside of the home, to be a good mom, to be a good homeschooler. And you're just busting that myth.

747

748Herb:
749 00:11:33
750

751
And now yes and no. There is a growth to it, and I want to say, because you.

752

753
You took it full time, and then as you got the schooling under control, you realized you had more time and you gained competence. And so it's like, you're not gonna. You're not gonna tell your moms. Yeah. Oh, yeah. You just do this. You learned. You grew into that.

754

755
It's not something that. That a mom can just, oh, I'm going to stop my job and do this, and boom, it's all going to be there.

756

757
They're going to freak the heck out if they do that.

758

759
759Anokhi Kapasi:
760 00:12:05
761

762
Yeah.

763

764Herb:
765 00:12:06
766

767
So. But you grew into it. It was so natural, the way you explained the story, and so that. That was beautiful. So thank you for doing that.

768

769
But also to know that it is possible to grow into it. It does take time, and it's worth it.

770

771Kristina:
772 00:12:20
773

774
Yes, absolutely. Because, Christina, as you were starting to say, I want to just add even worse.

775

776
I've met women who think they can't become moms because in order to keep their career. So it. You know, it's even. I just find that really sad to. For a woman who chooses that path, that's totally different.

777

778
But I would never want a woman to be forced down that path that where she. She's pushed into a corner thinking she has to choose one or the other. And the same goes for homeschooling.

779

780
Like, to think that homeschooling is out of the picture, it's just. It's not what hardcore scientists do, you know, which is what I thought. So.

781

782Anokhi Kapasi:
783 00:13:11
784

785
Yeah. Yeah. That's so beautiful because.

786

787Herb:
788 00:13:13
789

790
Yeah.

791

792Anokhi Kapasi:
793 00:13:14
794

795
Like. Like we were talking about, you know, it's not one or the other. You can grow into both, as long as you come with the attitude that you came with.

796

797
Right. The curiosity, the how can I organize or strategize or whatever and make it happen for us and our family.

798

799
So I want to jump back to the boys real quick. So you had the one that was in kindergarten, so of course the other one was younger and then just decided to keep doing the homeschool thing.

800

801
Give us one of those days. You said the aha moments really light you up and really want you to keep going.

802

803
Talk about one of those challenging days, though, because it's something that also doesn't get talked about, is like, oh, we're going to have this beautiful homeschool and everything's going to work fine. Give us a challenging day and maybe how you kind of thought about it or worked around it.

804

805Kristina:
806 00:14:00
807

808
Yeah. So one, I'm. I'll talk about My older son first, but he is very much similar to me. So we are very opinionated. We have lots of ideas, and we need.

809

810
Once we have an idea, we just need to see it through. Okay? And I love that about him. But then it's also really tricky sometimes for me to be in charge, let's say of the teaching environment and then.

811

812
Or the school environment and then for him to be the one that's learning and to say, okay, let's see where Mom's going with that. So what I'm trying to say is that we butt heads a lot because we both have strong opinions.

813

814
And so I would say that a lot of times that leads to some difficult moments. What has taken me probably longer than it should have is that I'm learning to let a lot of things go and let my kids take the lead.

815

816
And it's been a really beautiful thing to witness. So I am one of those people that likes to just plan things out so I know what's in the horizon.

817

818
And like I said, once I have an idea, I really want to see it through. So it took a bit of clenching my teeth and just stepping back and saying, okay, let's just see what. What's going to happen.

819

820Herb:
821 00:15:32
822

823
Relaxing, relaxing, relaxing.

824

825Kristina:
826 00:15:37
827

828
When you see their confidence just build. And they're way more capable than we give them credit for. They have amazing ideas.

829

830
And one of the best things that I've seen is, now that I homeschool both my kids, is that my older son often will take charge of guiding my younger son. And so that's been great. And that wouldn't have happened had I not stepped back.

831

832
Another thing is that I really value a client, clean, organized house. It's just something I need. I need to walk into my door, my front door, and just feel like everything's in its place.

833

834
That's partially what makes it feel like home to me. It's really hard when we're homeschooling to see the mess. But another thing I've learned is that the mess is a good sign. It's a sign that.

835

836
That they're working through things, they're learning. And so I've come up with this middle ground. So where there are things that are difficult for you, sometimes there is a give and take to that moment.

837

838
So, for example, in this situation, I'm referring to where things just get really disorganized and I get. It's hard for me to think. I get flustered when I just see the mess. But I tell myself, okay, this is important to the learning process right now.

839

840
But don't worry, because when we're done, it's going to get cleaned up. And so we have a system in place where now the kids at the end of whatever we call done, they.

841

842
We all work together and we clean up and then reset before the next day.

843

844Herb:
845 00:17:19
846

847
Kind of stuff done's not done until the cleanup is done.

848

849
849Anokhi Kapasi:
850 00:17:22
851

852
Right.

853

854Herb:
855 00:17:22
856

857
So it's not when the fun is done, it's like, no, you gotta teach the cleanup.

858

859Kristina:
860 00:17:28
861

862
Yeah, exactly.

863

864
So, I mean, there's so many other little things that happen that just learn to adjust and find that middle ground where I've worked really hard to come up with a. Create what I think is a creative project.

865

866
I think they're gonna really sink their teeth into it, and then it's a bust or, I don't know, just things like that.

867

868Anokhi Kapasi:
869 00:17:49
870

871
That happens in my classroom so many days.

872

873Herb:
874 00:17:51
875

876
You are on the verge of getting so much of your time back and learning so much. You. You said. I was like, I can't believe how much I'. It's like you have no idea.

877

878
Because pretty soon your kids are going to start learning what they want to learn. And then it's kind of funny because they pull the curriculum all around, whatever it is they're doing.

879

880
And then all day long, they're going to be coming up to you, mom, look at this. Mom, look at this. Mom, look. And.

881

882
And so they are going to be so enthusiastic that you're going to be learning stuff that you had no idea that you were going to be learning as soon as your kids take charge. Or has that already started happening?

883

884Kristina:
885 00:18:29
886

887
For sure. My children are already learning about all kinds of tech and photography, digital photography, features and things.

888

889
They'll take over a lot of my digital tasks and do it for me because they think it's fun. And I'm like, oh, goodness, I got this kind of annoying task off my plate, and they think it's fun also. I would learn certain.

890

891
I was a very good student in school, but I learned certain subjects just for the sake of learning it for the test and then being done with it. It was like something I had to grit my teeth through. History was one of those things. It was never a forte,.

892

893Anokhi Kapasi:
894 00:19:14
895

896
But I.

897

898Kristina:
899 00:19:15
900

901
Was good at memorizing, so I'd memorize and do fine.

902

903
However, I am just loving history now, maybe because I'm learning it as an adult and I'm understanding the lessons that I see what happens in the world and I'm finally making connecting the dots. But I. I didn't have that perspective when I was growing up, or maybe it was being made for me and I just, it wasn't clear to me.

904

905
But now I'm learning this stuff as a. Teach it to my kids.

906

907
And as you know, I'm a very science and engineering heavy person, so all of my higher education was very much concentrated in all of that. So I didn't have to think about this stuff. And it's just been so fun. It's one of my favorite subjects now to teach.

908

909Herb:
910 00:20:07
911

912
Are you making it fun for your kids and are they enjoying it as much as you are?

913

914Kristina:
915 00:20:11
916

917
They are. They ask for it all the time. It is actually a very strong subject area for my children, especially my older son.

918

919
And so I bring up my older son a lot more because I've had more years of homeschooling with him, so I have more examples to draw upon. But really, they're both really amazing kids. And yeah, he will remember from four years ago things that we learned.

920

921
So when he was like a first grader, even I will have forgotten the name or the, you know, event. I'll remember a little more broadly what the learning lesson out of that was.

922

923
And he would just like, mom, like the, you know, and he'll bring up some era.

924

925
925Anokhi Kapasi:
926 00:20:54
927

928
Absolutely. Love that.

929

930
That is so cool because whenever that happens, you know, like you said, that love of learning, that confidence that happens because they're in the process of learning and they remember for a longer time.

931

932
And then, of course, we also have brought this into a lot of times, the fun, the activity, the hands on, how do we make it real to the kiddos so that it does stick with them longer than just learning for a test. And one of the biggest differences around homeschool is that that you can really bring it to life for them. So kudos for all of that.

933

934
And one of the things you brought up was how you and your son butt heads, right? And one of the things that we work with with our parents is that we want you to pay attention to the child's learning styles and their personalities.

935

936
Because we as teachers, we as moms, we're like, oh, we want to teach the way we learned best, or we think it should happen. But when we actually dig into our child's learning style or child's personality, my.

937

938Herb:
939 00:21:54
940

941
Kids so much like me. I bet you he learns just like me. And not always.

942

943Kristina:
944 00:22:00
945

946
Yes, that was definitely something that I, I came across too. So I know exactly what you guys are talking about.

947

948Anokhi Kapasi:
949 00:22:06
950

951
Yeah.

952

953Herb:
954 00:22:07
955

956
So how did you work around that? What. What was, how long did that take? And. And how did you. How did you work through that?

957

958Kristina:
959 00:22:15
960

961
Yeah, so I had to. I read a lot of books and listened to podcasts and stuff. So that is kind of where I started to learn about child led learning.

962

963
And I would notice things that would light them up or recall ways when things that maybe they were struggling with or that I was trying to teach them and what ended up working, you know, just in life, for example, not biting your nails or something like that. Right. And then I realized, oh, when we read a book about that, that worked really well versus having a discussion or. Right.

964

965
So then it made me realize that one of my kids learned really well by getting the information through text and seeing pictures and things like that, also understanding what their passions are, what, what lights them up and then infusing that in there as well. So, for example, of course I want my kids to master writing skills, but writing is so many things, right?

966

967
It's the idea, you know, communicating the idea, getting it on paper. Maybe the physical part of writing, it's. There's so many different components to it.

968

969Anokhi Kapasi:
970 00:23:38

972
Right.

976

977
The polished version, the dirty version. So one of my kids really loves choreographing battle scenes and just acting the scenes out.

978

979
So as part of writing, sometimes for creative writing, instead of having him write, I will mix it up and I'll just let him narrate and he'll be making all the sound effects and movements as he's narrating the story.

980

981
And I just use a little recorder to get it down and then it translates it onto paper and I show him, this is the story you came up, but this is what it would look like if it had been written down. And then, you know, I maybe have him write a couple of the lines down himself because those were his own words.<
981/p>
982

983
And then sometimes we do it the old fashioned way and we have him. Right. But, you know, so that just makes it a little more fun when I let them learn the way that they express things fast. Yeah.

984

987

988
All right, so now, now we're having lots of good stories. Now let's talk about the downside. Let's talk about how weird your children are now that they're homeschooled.

989

990Kristina:
991 00:24:45
992

993
The weirdest. Oh my goodness.

994

995Herb:
996 00:24:47
997

998
How they can't talk to people out in public and about how they're scared to, to just run up and say hello to anyone.

999

1000Kristina:
1001 00:24:56
1002

1003
Oh my goodness. Yeah, I can't bring them anywhere. They're never going to fit into society. They are never going to get a job nor go to college.

1004

1005Herb:
1006 00:25:04
1007

1008
Right.

1009

1010Kristina:
1011 00:25:07
1012

1013
I am kidding about all of that. I Get lots of comments all the time. First of all, we had a really, we have a really great active homeschooling group.

1014

1015
It took me a while to figure out how to find, you know, other homeschoolers in my town because I happen to be, yeah, I happen to be in one of those towns where we have a really great school system. And so it's just kind of the thing people do, you know, like homeschooling isn't really thought much of here. Not thought much of.

1016

1017
You know what I mean? It doesn't come across people's minds that much because why not?

1018

1019Herb:
1020 00:25:46
1021

1022
You're in a good school system. Why would you bother taking your kids out of school?

1023

1024Kristina:
1025 00:25:49
1026

1027
Exactly. Yeah, exactly. However slowly, slowly we have.

1028

1029
I have come across other families in my town, I've recruited a couple families in my town into homeschooling. And then when you add up all the neighboring towns, there's so many, so many. And I don't really do the whole Facebook thing, so I haven't.

1030

1031
That's why it took me a little longer. If you're on Facebook or other community sites, you'll find your tribe much sooner than me. I just, I don't do social media really, so.

1032

1033
And that is why it took me a little longer. But almost all of the people we met was through word of mouth. And it is a pretty large group now that I've discovered where everyone hides.

1034

1035
And also my kids are still very much involved in town sports and activities. So they have plenty of friends in town. Wherever we go, they still get invited to all the birthday parties of the traditional school going kids.

1036

1037
And I'm trying to think, so there's a social component. My kids don't. They're age blind. Literally age blind.

1038

1039
They will talk to an 80 year old person, a college age person and a 3 year old exactly the same way. Exactly the same way. And well, maybe the high school counselors at their summer camps they have a soft spot for, they know are like super cool.

1040

1041
But yeah, they are able to talk to people. I get comments all the time, compliments all the time about how they carry themselves and I mean, of course they're still kids.

1042

1043
They're things that they have to work on.

1044

1045
But people are surprised when I hand them my wallet at the grocery store and I have them go check out for me at the grocery store and then practice doling out the money and making sure they get the right change and making eye contact with whoever's working at the register and not because they lack that skill anymore. I just Just want them to keep doing it. But it, it, it's, you know, has helped them tremendously everywhere.

1046

1047
But that's something they get to practice because they're not confined to a building all day.

1048

1049
1049Anokhi Kapasi:
1050 00:28:26
1051

1052
And those are the skills that, you know, we, we talk about constantly. It's like you want your child full of those life skills, not just the academic skills.

1053

1054
And when we talk about homeschool, it's not just academics, it's the body, mind, spirit, is that family connection that you really want within your family. And I hear you talking about that. You know, the boys get along pretty good most of the time.

1055

1056Kristina:
1057 00:28:51
1058

1059
Most of the time they are really good friends. And like I said, my younger one sort of idolizes his best friend is he considers is his older brother. My older son is.

1060

1061
Of course they have their squabbles. There are definitely things where they might argue over something that we have one of or whatever.

1062

1063
But outside of that, I feel like the luckiest person for having the family that I have. But my older son, he never excludes anyone and he's really generous.

1064

1065
And so I think that one of the best blessings I have gotten through this whole homeschooling experience is that my husband and I were able to sit down and decide what I are our core values, what are our family values, what is important to us. And of course you do some of that when you become parents generally.

1066

1067
But we were able to very intentionally make that a part of our lives because our kids are with us. Whether we're at home or not, they're with us. Right? So we can infuse those values into our day to day. And just what I had to differentiate.

1068

1069
One of the reasons I was okay with homeschooling, you know, even though I was kicking and screaming, one of the reasons which finally kind of made me say, okay, I'm going to pull you out of school, is that I could tell my younger, my son, my older son at the time was conflating school and learning. And so they're really different things.

1070

1071
And it took me a second, but then I recognized by the stuff he was saying, I realized that whatever issues he was having with being in a school, like being in a building, he was transferring over to. That's what learning is. And I realized, because I love learning. I just told you that. And so. And I had the best school experience.

1072

1073
That's why I was a little sad when we pulled him out, because I had the most amazing school experience. I loved every. I was that person who looked forward to going back to school. That Wanted to learn everything.

1074

1075
And so I was a little sad, but, but to me it was more important that he loved to learn, just like I love to learn, just like my husband loves to learn.

1076

1077
And so I said, hey, if we can infuse the, the, you know, that, delineate that for him, I guess and show that he is a, he can like learning, then, then that, that's, you know, one of my, that was one of my goals and a core value for us.

1078

1079Herb:
1080 00:31:36
1081

1082
School and learning are not the same thing. So we've broken now two of the biggest myths. The third biggest myth is I don't have time for this. It's going to take me six, eight hours a day.

1083

1084
I have to, because I have to replicate school. I have to do all of it. It's like, how much time are you actually doing the, the curriculum?

1085

1086
Because, because as, as a teacher for 27 years and someone who spent a lot of time in her classroom, her teaching time each day was actually only two to three hours in a six or seven hour day. And, but, but moms and outside of the, you don't see that. So how much time does it really take to spend with your kids in the school?

1087

1088
And then how much of the rest of the time of the day do you spend with them in enjoyment and.

1089

1090
1090Anokhi Kapasi:
1091 00:32:29
1092

1093
Yeah.

1094

1095Herb:
1096 00:32:29
1097

1098
And working your business while they are bored, which is a good thing. And then learning because they want to.

1099

1100Kristina:
1101 00:32:37
1102

1103
All right, So a couple people had told me when I was talking to them about potentially homeschooling. They said, oh, you know, it really, you're talking about two, three hours max, like at that age, the kindergarten age, maybe even one to two hours.

1104

1105
And I just didn't believe them. I really didn't. I thought, no, but not me and not my kids.

1106

1107Anokhi Kapasi:
1108 00:32:59
1109

1110
Right?

1111

1112Kristina:
1113 00:33:01
1114

1115
And I was really shocked. And then I was thinking, what it, what are kids doing all day? And like I said, I love school, but I was just thinking, what did I do for eight?

1116

1117Herb:
1118 00:33:13
1119

1120
They're being taught to only talk to people in their own age group. And then to be traumatized for 15 minutes a day while there's no group around to be, yeah, what, what's happening in school?

1121

1122Kristina:
1123 00:33:25
1124

1125
Oh, yeah. So I was just thinking, but they, you know, it's so great because they get to be outside and play whether it's snowy or it's a sunny day or rainy.

1126

1127
You know, there is so much other stuff that we're doing. So I'll definitely talk about that more.

1128

1129
But just to let you know, after a couple weeks of homeschooling and Like I said, I just couldn't believe that we were getting done as fast as we were. So I thought that I was missing something, right? So I finally, I was like, okay, I. I'm an analytical person. I'm really detail oriented.

1130

1131
I said, I have to see what's going on here. And I had to map it out. So I took. I downloaded the entire state. You call that. Oh, my goodness.

1132

1133Anokhi Kapasi:
1134 00:34:21
1135

1136
Curriculum guide? Yeah, the standards.

1137

1138Kristina:
1139 00:34:22
1140

1141
Yeah, the state standards. That's it, the state standards. And I downloaded the whole thing for every subject, for the grade that my child was in.

1142

1143
And I took every subject, mapped it out for an entire year. They say, you should do this, this, this, this, Right. And Massachusetts has a very detailed one. And so I mapped it all out.

1144

1145
So I took the entire school year, broke it week by week by week, mapped it out, then said, okay, so based on the curriculum we have, we'd have to do this chapter. And this week, da, da, da, planned it all out. And I was like, wow. So then I said, okay, it works out.

1146

1147
Of course we do more than just what the state standard holds. But I just wanted to make sure I was. At least they were learning at peer level.

1148

1149
And when I tried to follow a day that just had what the state standards was offering, we were done in that time, no problem. Like, no problem. Like half that time. And so I finally proved to myself, okay, yeah, this is actually the case. I'm not missing anything.

1150

1151
And then guess what we did with the extra time, we were able to move forward academically on the subjects that my kids really wanted to dive deeper in.

1152

1153
1153Anokhi Kapasi:
1154 00:35:35
1155

1156
Yes.

1157

1158Kristina:
1159 00:35:36
1160

1161
So we're several grades ahead.

1162

1163
If you want to talk about grades like, you know, I don't know how you map it out exactly, but just based off of curriculum, we know that our kids are several grades ahead on certain subjects and then with the rest of the day. So often I just give like the morning half of my day is sort of for desk time and more of the academic enrichment stuff.

1164

1165
Then we'll have lunch and then afterwards will be. This is on a typical day.

1166

1167
And then afterwards is all the hands on stuff, like maybe extra experiments or doing stuff outside or errands or projects and things like that, or they're exploring on their own, whatever. Yeah.

1168

1169Herb:
1170 00:36:22
1171

1172
External activities.

1173

1174Kristina:
1175 00:36:24
1176

1177
Yeah, I mean, sometimes that was in the morning. It depending on if I outsource some of that. Like we had an amazing art teacher that we would go to classes to in her studio, Things like that.

1178

1179
I also try to build in field trips as many days a week as I Can. But at least one day were proper, like go drive somewhere and do that. We didn't.

1180

1181
We weren't tied to a school schedule for doing, for traveling, so we'd somehow.

1182

1183Herb:
1184 00:36:52
1185

1186
The curriculum was a couple hours a day and then the rest of the day was building the memories that you are going to have for the rest of your life of times growing with your family.

1187

1188Kristina:
1189 00:37:05
1190

1191
Exactly, exactly. And also just knowing that I had time to work on my professional work and my entrepreneurial work and I was able to kind of manage it.

1192

1193
Now some of my work I did do in the evenings, but that was my choice because that's just how I set it up with my clients and things like that.

1194

1195Herb:
1196 00:37:33
1197

1198
The flexibility is outstanding. If you did. If you had the time in the morning and your kids were evening people, you'd do it in the morning.

1199

1200
That's the amazing thing about this, is your schedule just flows into something that fits your whole family. Instead of having to be. I have to be here at this time to drop my kids off in this time.

1201

1202
And now this afternoon I have to reschedule all of my people because I have to go visit the teacher. And. And now it's like you are the teacher. You get to visit her every day and know what your children are doing.

1203

1204Kristina:
1205 00:38:04
1206

1207
Yes. And we try to maximize interactions, let's say, with the grandparents. We're lucky that all four grandparents are nearby.

1208

1209
And so, you know, we had them spend time during the week, school week with them as well.

1210

1211
Sometimes they had skills that they would were teaching my kids, you know, cooking, handwriting, things like that that they excelled in, that they were willing to do.

1212

1213Herb:
1214 00:38:38
1215

1216
People still do that?

1217

1218Anokhi Kapasi:
1219 00:38:39

1224 00:38:42

1231
You are amazing. I am so glad that this journey has been so amazing for you and awesome for your kids as well. And thank you for sharing. And.

1232

1233
And now I want to give you some space also to talk about how else do you help the moms? Right.

1234

1235
How do you help these other moms create that work life balance or choose to homeschool because they know that they're not really giving up as much as they think they're giving up. Tell us a little bit about what you do with clients now, please.

1236

1250
Where these women feel very torn in different directions. And when they do try to do both, they feel very fragmented.

1251

1252
And I am using a systems based approach, a stepwise framework that to help them be able to. And the key here is integrating career and life because often you'll hear about people talking about work life, balance, right?

1253

1254
And I, I do think balance is possible. The problem is it's very trendy for influencers to be out there saying that work life balance is not possible for women.

1255

1256
And I think I mentioned to you, Christina, that that comes on a little harder for women in higher skilled knowledge, work type areas.

1257

1258
And so what I am trying to do is help them be able to find that integration that the problem that many of us have is that we silo everything we say, okay, I'm gonna. This part of my day is for career and this part of my day is, you know, for life stuff and motherhood.

1259

1260
And so so the way you integrate it is actually to flip everything around and to start with planning your life.

1261

1262
And I'm talking about high level, like talking about what are your values, what is your vision, what is your purpose in doing what you do in your life and figuring those things out and then funneling that down to what are your goals and then funneling that down even more to the granular day to day decisions and actions that you want to take. How do you manage your time and energy and relationships and things like that? So that is what I teach.

1263

1264
When you have that figured out for your life, then career is just one. It's one component in that whole picture.

1265

1266
And if you constantly are able to keep that picture in mind when you are making decisions about your job, should I take that job or not, Should I accept that promotion, Should I work remotely or not?

1267

1268
Whatever your decisions that you are facing, including project based decisions, become like they snap into clarity immediately because you have that life picture, the life plan figured out.

1269

1270
So you use that as a filter and you're able to say, okay, now I have the confidence to make this decision because every decision I make I am confident is going to move me closer to this goal, to this life that I have. And that's how they work in synchrony. So maybe that was a little longer than you wanted, but my website is solveformom.com I'm changing it up a bit.

1271

1272
So if you do go there and it looks a little different, that is why. And my podcast is Science Careers for Moms. And you can find me on LinkedIn. I have, you know, under my name, Anoki Kapasi.

1273

1274
And you can find me on LinkedIn on my personal page or you can find the solve for mom company page on LinkedIn. So those are the best ways and Very soon. It's in development right now.

1275

1276
I'm talking about in a week or two, my online career alignment diagnostic will be available. And I will share that link with you, Christina Nurb.

1277

1278
But I will leave that for anyone who ever is in that position about wondering what's not working between their career and their motherhood. Take this. It'll identify the biggest friction point, let's say, and help you make those changes, at least the first couple changes.

1279

1280
So, yeah, thank you.

1281

1282

1284

1285
I was just gonna ask you. That was the next question, like, how do you get a hold of you and of course, everything is down in the show notes.

1286

1287
So ladies and gentlemen, people who are listening, you know, dive into those show notes because not only is there the information of our guests or bio and things like that, how to connect with them, but also usually there's a free gift down there.

1288

1289
Like Anoki was just saying, there's a free gift in there for you and just different ways to connect and really make the show work for you and your family. So thank you for sharing that. And I love how, you know, it's not necessarily balanced like you said, but integrating. Right.

1290

1291
And really following on those goals and those values that you hold dear.

1292

1293
Because it's pretty easy when your value is family and it's not on your calendar to see, oops, am I living up to that value or is this activity matching up with my value of kindness and generosity or whatever it happens to be. And it's an easier yes and no because you know that you had that planned out. So I love that, the way you describe that. Thank you.

1294

1295Kristina:
1296 00:44:36
1297

1298
And I'll give a pro tip here. Yeah, it's a fun little exercise for anyone who wants to go open up your calendar right now.

1299

1300
Whether it's digital or a planner, your calendar should be a reflection of the life you want to have. The values that you have. Right.

1301

1302
If you value family time, but on your calendar, you haven't blocked out any time to spend with your family, then something isn't working right, or whatever your values are. Your calendar should be that in. In action, you know, in time. So, yeah, it's a fun thing to just double check if you're on the right track or not.

1303

1304Anokhi Kapasi:
1305 00:45:16
1306

1307
Thank you so very, very much. This has been an amazing show. I. I love the depth that you have gone into. I love the generosity of ideas and stories that you've shared as well.

1308

1309
This has been an amazing show and I really hope it is a great inspiration for all of those who are like, oh, can I really do this? And yes, you can.

1314
Yes. And I would like to thank you for being here today, too. You know, you started about six years ago, five years ago, and still.

1315

1316
That was still kind of the dark ages of homeschooling. And you actually then started helping other moms out there. So a lot of times homeschoolers, it's like, nope, keep it low.

1317

1318
So I don't get bugged about it, but you put yourself out there. I'm sure you got bugged about it.

1319

1329

1330
So thank you so much for being here today. Thank you for putting yourself out there. That's what heroes do.

1331

1332
And so thank you for being a hero and actually stepping out and making the world a better place.

1345

1346
Remember to, like, review, share all of those different things, because the more that our message gets out there, it will help children and other families be raised in happy, healthy, and successful ways so that we can build stronger communities, stronger families, and keep these kids with confidence and a love of learning that is unparalleled. And then what will happen in our society, we will see a big, big change. So please, please, please do your job. Like, share, review.

1352

1353
That increases engagement, that gets more views, that gets more people to see this information and more people that get help. And that's what we're really looking for. So help as you can get this information out.
