Projections indicate the combined launch tempo could reach 650 to 700 or more launches annually by 2035, or roughly 13 launches per week. The increased launch and booster-recovery tempo is prompting spaceport organizations to evaluate existing processes, infrastructure and software tools. Projected launch rates could require operations to be managed on a daily rather than monthly basis, creating requirements similar in some respects to those of an airport.
423

424
DataEX, developed by defense software company Beast Code, is intended to provide Guardians and Airmen with digital tools for planning, coordination and execution of spaceport activities. The application combines information from multiple systems, databases and mission sets into a common operating picture intended to help users access relevant information in an environment where conditions can change rapidly.
425
The effort began in April 2023, when Beast Code software developers participated in an inaugural hackathon at Patrick Space Force Base, Florida. Working with SLD 45 operators and innovation teams, the company developed an initial spaceport visualization concept focused on helping users plan and coordinate installation activities.
426
AFWERX and SpaceWERX subsequently selected Beast Code to support its Digital Spaceport of the Future initiative, which seeks to examine ways to integrate and automate spaceport operations as launch activity increases. Through two related Small Business Innovation Research Phase II contracts, Beast Code began developing the DataEX application and supporting data infrastructure to connect existing spaceport systems with cloud-based capabilities.
427

428
In October 2025, SpaceWERX awarded Beast Code a four-year, $15 million Strategic Funding Increase (STRATFI) contract to further develop the effort. Initial work focused on SLD 45 operations at Patrick Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The effort is also being evaluated for potential application to other U.S. Space Force operations, including Space Launch Delta 30 at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.
429
According to Beast Code, the DataEX effort incorporates requirements identified through discussions with personnel from Spaceport Integration, now designated the 1st Space Launch Squadron, as well as the 45th Safety Squadron, 1st Range Operations Squadron, 45th Range Management and digital transformation offices. The company used those discussions to identify information and workflow requirements for the application.
430
DataEX is built on Beast Code’s software framework and is designed to bring information from multiple existing sources into a consolidated view without requiring wholesale changes to the systems that generate or transmit the underlying data. The application currently displays information including Star Gate launch schedule data, ground movements, safety zone
430s, security roadblocks, construction zones, hazard areas and user-generated events. The information is intended to support situational awareness, planning, coordination and deconfliction among participating units.
431

432
The development of DataEX from a five-day hackathon prototype into a project supported through a STRATFI contract illustrates how operational requirements identified by users can inform the development and evaluation of emerging technology.
433
SpaceWERX works with industry, government organizations and military users to identify and develop technologies that may address U.S. Space Force requirements. The DataEX effort is one example of that process, moving from an initial concept to continued development and evaluation in an operational environment.
434
*Disclaimer: References to non-federal entities do not constitute or imply Department of War or Air Force endorsement of any company or organization.
435...

Success Story

2026-09-17

AFWERX, SpaceWERX Supports Development of AI Technology for Guardian Information Discovery

DAYTON, Ohio — Todayâs military operations often require rapid access to information to support planning and decision-making. For U.S. Space Force analysts, locating relevant information across a vast number of sources and agencies can be time-consuming and may increase cognitive workload, potentially affecting mission planning and operational decisions.
436
As the volume and complexity of data continue to grow, identifying relevant information and synthesizing it into useful context has become an increasingly important operational challenge. Personnel supporting military operations often require timely access to information to assist with mission planning and execution.
437

438
To support this effort, SpaceWERX awarded Danti a contract to accelerate the development and transition of an artificial intelligence-powered, agentic intelligence platform intended to help Guardians discover, organize and analyze mission-relevant information.
439
In 2023, SpaceWERX awarded Danti a Direct-to-Phase II contract to build, test and refine the technology for potential operational transition. In 2024, Danti received a Tactical Funding Increase (TACFI) award to further develop and scale the technology for commercial applications.
440
U.S. Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR) used the Danti platform during the Trojan Footprint 2026 exercise. Ground advisers used the platform to provide unclassified, space-enabled responses to critical requests for information from Georgian Special Operations Command (GSOC) operators executing tasks in the field.
441
According to Danti, the platform enables users to search data using natural language rather than complex search syntax. The technology is intended to interpret the context of a userâs question, automate search, retrieval and analysis tasks, and provides responses that include source attribution.
442

443
The platform is designed to integrate information from multiple data sources, including commercial providers and government agencies, into a single search experience. According to the company, this approach can help users locate geospatial information, imagery and other operational data more efficiently.
444
The platform is intended to reduce the time and expertise required to search across multiple datasets, allowing personnel to focus more on analysis and mission support. According to Danti, the technology can support workflows such as correlating space-based imagery and signals with publicly available news and social media content and automating portions of the reporting process.
445
The platform’
445s AI-enabled search and workflow capabilities are also designed to help users identify relationships among data that may be difficult to detect through manual search processes. Faster access to relevant information may support planning and decision-making in dynamic operational environments.
446

447
As the U.S. Space Force continues to modernize its digital capabilities, the service is evaluating technologies intended to improve data accessibility and operational efficiency. Commercial space activity continues to expand, yet many small businesses encounter challenges moving technologies from development to mission-ready systems.
451

452
The gap between development and adoption can slow the delivery of capabilities to warfighters. Although laboratory testing may demonstrate that a concept works, military organizations often require additional validation, performance data and technical assessments before considering a technology for transition. Companies without access to specialized facilities and expertise may face difficulties generating the evidence needed to advance their solutions.
453
Transitioning technology from a laboratory or development environment to operational conditions requires capital and verification of technical maturity. Without early and frequent technology readiness assessments, or TRAs, the Department of the Air Force risks investing in concepts that are not prepared to meet Space Force integration, launch or operational requirements.
454
SpaceWERX partners with The Aerospace Corp.
455
In early 2024, SpaceWERX â the innovation arm of the U.S. Space Force â partnered with The Aerospace Corp. to establish the Technology Readiness Level Bootcamp, or TRL Bootcamp. The initiative provides participating companies with access to technical experts and specialized test equipment to assess and mature their technologies.
456

457
The program also provides a structured process for evaluating whether commercially developed technologies funded by the government are prepared to advance through technology readiness levels. The resulting assessments help government program managers evaluate the costs, schedules and risks associated with potential transition into government programs.
458

458SpaceWERX works with program executive offices and other government stakeholders to identify candidates for the Bootcamp. Participating companies typically spend two to six months in the program. Using NASAâs Technology Readiness Assessment Guidebook as its framework, the Bootcamp provides access to laboratory facilities and independent technical experts. These experts conduct hardware and software assessments and provide technical recommendations, analyses and testing support intended to address identified readiness gaps in relevant Space Force mission areas.
459
To date, the Bootcamp has focused on technologies related to in-space servicing, assembly and manufacturing, or ISAM, and Tactically Responsive Space, or TacRS. The program works with participating companies to identify and address technical risks before they compete for potential Strategic Funding Increase, or STRATFI, and Tactical Funding Increase, or TACFI, awards. Participation in the Bootcamp does not guarantee eligibility, selection or funding under those or any other government programs.
460
This assessment process supports the acquisition transformation memo issued by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The memo emphasizes restructuring acquisition to prioritize âspeed to capabilityâ and calls for acquisition executives to apply technology and manufacturing readiness assessments throughout system development.
461
The inaugural and 2025 TRL Bootcamp cohorts provide examples of how the assessment process has been applied. Participating companies included KMI, Turion, Thermasat and ASEI. The companies received technical assessments and recommendations intended to help align their development efforts with Space Force mission requirements. Some participants later received follow-on funding or became involved in other government programs through separate evaluation and selection processes.
462

463
When a participating company requires technical or laboratory support beyond its internal capabilities, the Bootcamp may draw from The Aerospace Corp.âs laboratory network. Support has included analysis by specialists in spacecraft mechanisms, integration assistance and laboratory testing using robotic platforms in the Collaborative and Autonomous Vehicle Ecosystem laboratory and equipment in the optical and photonic systems laboratory.
464
The TRL Bootcamp reflects an approach in which SpaceWERX provides participating companies with technical expertise, assessments and access to specialized resources. These activities are intended to help the government evaluate technical maturity and inform potential transition decisions.
465
As described in the 2025 Acquisition Transformation Strategy, moving from requirements-based to solutions-based acquisition may require the government to accept additional risk. Technical assessments can help government decision-makers evaluate that risk. By identifying technical gaps early, the TRL Bootcamp supports national security space missions and provides data to inform government acquisition decisions.
466
Additional information is available in the joint SpaceWERX-Aerospace Corp. paper titled âBridging the Valley of Death: A DoD/FFRDC Partnership to Accelerate Low-TRL Commercial Space Technology for Military Programs.â
467
*Disclaimer: References to non-federal entities do not constitute or imply Department of War or Air Force endorsement of any company or organization.
468

469...

<img width="640" height="734" src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http://www.w3.org/2000/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20640%20734'%3E%3C/svg%3E" class="brxe-akzmku brxe-image in-the-news__image aspect--16-9

Space-based missile warning systems provide warfighters with real-time intelligence and secure communications to help defend against adversaries. Infrared sensors operating in high-altitude orbits detect heat signatures associated with ballistic missile launches and nuclear detonations. This capability provides early warning and enables military leaders to make timely operational decisions.
470
Satellite systems also support mission planning by providing environmental data used across the joint force. Accurate assessments of environmental conditions, including weather patterns, are essential to mission success. Satellite systems provide atmospheric data that support both ground and air combat readiness. Without this information, warfighters may be more vulnerable to adversary actions.
471

472
Despite their importance, Air Force and Space Force missions face operational limitations due to the finite lifespan of satellite systems. Increased global threats demand effective mission planning and reliable access to advanced technology throughout all phases of operations.
473
Meeting those mission requirements depends, in part, on the reliability and longevity of satellite power systems.
474
Extreme temperatures, radiation exposure and eclipse conditions can degrade system performance over time. Conventional satellites rely heavily on solar energy and conventional battery technologies that gradually lose capacity, reducing mission endurance.
475
Current satellite power systems typically support operations for approximately 10 to 15 years. When satellites reach the end of their service life, replacement and redeployment efforts can create capability gaps. These gaps increase national security risks and may limit access to critical intelligence, communications and mission-essential data.
476

477
Advancing long-duration power systems
478

478With support from SpaceWERX, City Labs Inc., a Florida-based developer of nuclear-powered energy technologies, is developing tritium-powered betavoltaic power technology intended to address these challenges.
479

480
According to the company, the tritium-powered betavoltaic power source is designed to serve either as a primary power source for long-duration autonomous systems or as a secondary or auxiliary power source for higher-power platforms. The technology is intended to provide continuous power for more than 20 years without recharging, routine maintenance or dependence on solar illumination.
481
In 2023, SpaceWERX awarded City Labs a $1.7 million SBIR Direct-to-Phase II contract to adapt tritium-powered batteries for Communications Security (COMSEC) systems. According to the company, the batteries operate at the nanowatt power level and are intended to provide more than 20 years of circuit-board standby power, reducing the need for replaceable lithium batteries.
482
In 2025, City Labs was awarded a $1.9 million SpaceWERX Tactical Funding Increase (TACFI) contract to enhance a tritium power source for autonomous sensing systems. This effort is intended to support long-duration sensing applications and improve operational endurance.
483
Designed for long-duration operations, the tritium-powered betavoltaic power source can maintain critical functions, including health monitoring, communications, memory retention, and other essential subsystems, during power interruptions, eclipse periods, or degradation of primary power systems.
484
The battery is applicable to a broad range of systems, including satellites, unattended sensors, remote monitoring devices, defense systems, infrastructure monitoring, and other applications where long-life, resilient power is required. The continuous generation of power allows energy to be accumulated and used periodically for higher-power activities. This enables duty-cycled operation of payloads and sensors while maintaining long-term autonomous operation, even after conventional batteries would have reached the end of their service life.
485
The increased frequency of satellite replacement and launch operations increases operational costs and creates gaps in critical intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR) and secure communications. By providing decades of power generation without recharging, the technology could reduce the need for battery replacement, maintenance visits, logistics support, and system downtime. For space systems, technology can help extend mission life and is intended to reduce the risk that a mission will end prematurely due to power system limitations.
486

487
The primary transition partner identified under the TACFI effort is Lockheed Martin Space, which is expected to support future integration and demonstration activities for space-based applications. The project is currently progressing through the remaining TACFI technical milestones required to demonstrate a higher-power tritium-powered betavoltaic system capable of supporting autonomous sensing applications for decades.
488
Near-term efforts include completing device fabrication, tritium integration, system assembly, and performance validation activities required to demonstrate a resilient, maintenance-free power source for SDA, ISR, and other persistent sensing missions. Resources needed include continued TACFI funding for semiconductor fabrication, tritium loading and testing infrastructure, integration activities, environmental testing, and future flight demonstration opportunities.
489
AFWERX and SpaceWERX support the Department of the Air Forceâs efforts to identify, mature and transition emerging technologies that address future mission needs. Through programs such as SBIR and TACFI, they provide pathways to evaluate commercial technologies with potential defense applications.
490
*Disclaimer: References to non-federal entities do not constitute or imply Department of War or Air Force end
