The site features articles, tutorials, tips, videos, clinics, 56 and member forums. Our active members include professional band instrument 57 repair technicians, musicians, students, music educators, and instrument 58 collectors. The site is owned, developed by, and operated by Michelle 59 Williamson, a band instrument repair 60 technician and web 61 developer from Pennsylvania (USA).
62 63
Take the PROBIRT Tour for the complete 64 overview of the website.
65 66 67
Our Philosophy
68
We believe it's better to put good, solid information into people's 69 hands than to let them "hack" or muddle their way through band instrument 70 repair. While there's no substitute for schooling and/or apprenticeship, 71 keeping information private and out of people's hands only harms the 72 field as a whole. Our goal is to help ensure that anyone who has his 73 or her instrument repaired will receive quality work. To that end we 74 believe modern communication technologies can help make this goal achievable. 75
76 77
The Birth of PROBIRT
78
The idea for PROBIRT sprang from a discussion between several band 79 instrument repair technicians about how the Internet and modern technology 80 could be harnessed to assist in their continuing education. Realizing 81 that there is a strong need for this, particularly in light of how difficult 82 it can be to receive band instrument repair training at an affordable 83 price, Michelle registered the domain name and began developing the 84 concepts and web site design. In January 2005 the site was ready for 85 beta testing by a group of practicing band instrument repair technicians. 86 Word spread quickly and a large number of people outside the trade showed 87 interest. The decision was made to open the site to non-technicians
88 as well. This meant putting the project back into development so it 89 would be more easily accessible to people with differing levels of technical 90 abilities as well as able to accommodate increased site traffic. In 91 December 2005 PROBIRT went live, opening its doors to anyone with an 92 interest in band instrument repair.
93 94
Where We Go From Here
95
The future of PROBIRT is wide open. We're currently working on additions 96 to the site as well as developing new ideas to improve its usefulness 97 and effectiveness. Your ideas are always appreciated! There's no governing 98 board, lengthy approval process, bureaucracy, or politics to deal with, 99 so if you have an idea, please send it to probirt@probirt.com. If it's 100 feasible, it will get done. 101
102
103
104 105
106 107
108
PROBIRT
109
P.O.
