Enoch- Walking With God

In our children’s talks on Sunday mornings, we have been working through Hebrews 11 and considering the people of faith listed there.
A few weeks ago, Kate gave the children’s talk on Enoch from verses 5 – 6 of that chapter. I’ve been thinking about him ever since. He’s a somewhat mysterious figure but the Bible holds him up as a good example of godliness. His first appearance is in Genesis 5. He is part of the Genealogical line from Adam to Noah. He stands out because he is described as one who ‘walked with God.’ Before the fall we are told that Adam walked with God in the garden he had perfect fellowship and relationship with God. After the fall, however that fellowship and intimacy was broken and he and Eve were cast out of the garden. From that point on fellowship with God would be imperfect but still possible for those who had faith in him. Enoch walked with God which becomes the picture of what it means to know, love and follow God. To walk in his ways. Do we have that desire to walk with God daily? To have that close intimate fellowship with him, to meet him in his word, in prayer, with his people? Are you making it your goal to walk with him closely every day? Enoch walked with God.
Another place that we see Enoch’s name is in the book of Jude v 14 – 16. There Jude quotes a book called 1 Enoch which claimed that Enoch prophesied about the Lord’s return and judgement. This book is not part of the Bible and not inspired like the biblical writers were. Jude quotes this as a piece of literature known to his readers. Paul does something similar in Acts 17 v 28 and Titus 1 v 12. Here Jude makes a point about the return of the lord and Christ&r
squo;s just judgement on these false teachers at his return. It was widely believed that Enoch was one preached and spoke the word of the Lord. Let us be ready and God give us opportunities to speak for him and share the gospel. He walked with God in his generation and spoke the truth of God’s word.
Enoch lived as one who walked with God and spoke for God but his death, or lack thereof, is also notable. Genesis tells us that he ‘he was not, for the Lord took him.’ Hebrews elaborates by saying that ‘By faith, Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found because God taken him.’ His departure from this world was very similar to Elijah’s in 2 Kings 2. He had faith in God. It is only possible to come to God, to draw near by believing in Christ and what he has done in order to save us, through his life death and resurrection, that we can draw near to God. Through faith in him is how we can know him and walk with him. Enoch was one who was described as having pleased God. In fact, the Septuagint which is the Greek translation of the Old Testament, interprets the phrase ‘Walked with God’ as ‘pleased God’. This is possibly why he was spared death, because of his close walk and desire to please God. Whatever the case the one who walked with God in this life, was taken into his presence and now walks with him fully in Heaven. This is the great hope for every Christian. The knowledge of life with God after death.
Let’s pray that in our lives we would be those who walk closely with God, speak the truth for him and in all we do aim to living lives pleasing to him. We can do all this knowing that whenever we die, we will be with him and walk with him in perfect fellowship again.

She Did What She Could

Not long before Jesus’s death there is a beautiful account of a woman who poured a flask of ointment over Jesus’ head (Mark 14 v 1 – 11). This is recorded by Matthew, Mark and John. Within this account, there are different people who respond in various ways to Jesus. Jesus is at the centre of it all and those around him are demonstrating by their words and actions, where they stand with him. In turn, they cause us to ask ourselves where we stand with him.
There are the Chief Priests and the scribes who are trying to find a way to arrest and kill Jesus (Mark 14 v 1 – 2). There is also Judas, one of the twelve disciples, who betrayed Jesus to the chief priests after this meal. Those were two fatal and tragic responses to Jesus. In contrast, this woman comes to Jesus, breaks the flask and pours its contents over his head. As she did this, some claimed it was wasteful: she could have sold it and given the money to the poor! John tells us that Judas was one of these people. He writes that Judas said this not because he cared about the poor but because he loved money and often helped himself to the moneybag (John 12 v 6).
Yet Jesus responds differently. Personally, I would find it unsettling if someone poured a jar of anything over my head! At first glance it seems a bit strange to us. Yet Jesus sees what she is doing and calls it ‘a beautiful thing.’ This was expensive ointment that could not be used again due to the flask being broken. She wanted to take this opportunity to show her love for Jesus. She believed he was worth it. This wonderful act of devotion and worship was pleasing to Jesus even if the others couldn’t see it. Jesus saw the heart behind the act and said, ‘She did what she could.’ This beautiful thing. That’s what she had to offer, that is what she could personally do. And in doing what she could, she did more than she knew.

Jesus said, ‘
she has anointed my body beforehand for burial.’ Jesus was predicting his death, as he did several times in his teaching and conversations with his disciples. He pointed out that the poor would always be with them but they would not always have him, pointing to his need to die, rise and ascend into Heaven. She did what she could and it was beautiful to Jesus.
What can you do for Jesus with what you have? To give money to global missions or to the Church? To go somewhere new or take some risk for him? To give of your time to another in need? To get up earlier to spend time with Christ in personal devotion and worship? To turn down a well-paid job to serve Christ elsewhere? To share the gospel with a friend or colleague that doesn’t know Christ?
Sometimes what we do for Christ won’t make sense to other people but is beautiful to Jesus. While those who were present were annoyed at her, Jesus told them that wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the world, what she has done will be told in memory of her. By simply doing what she could she would be remembered and we still remember he today. We never know the impact of doing what we can for Christ. Let us do so even if it is costly or we are ridiculed. Let’s do what we can and do what is pleasing and beautiful in Jesus’s sight.

Strength in Weakness

Our world doesn’t always value weakness. We like to believe that we are strong and have it altogether. Many of us don’t want others to see weakness in our lives and we prefer to project an image of strength. On social media it is easier to appear strong, together, happy and successful. Strength and influence are often more valued than weakness and vulnerability.

The Bible challenges the way that we think about weakness, as it does many other areas of our lives. God shows us that there is a kind of weakness that is a strength, and warns us against the dangers of pride. One of the clearest examples of this is in the life of King Uzziah. 2 Chronicles 26 tells us of his reign. He started very well, one of the few kings of whom it is said,

‘He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord.’

Uzziah sought the Lord as he led the people and listened to Zechariah the prophet who instructed in him in God’s ways (v 4 – 5). The Lord gave him great success as he fought Israel’s enemies; as he built cities, towers and armies. He had livestock and land, and he made great machines and weapons, all with the blessing and help of the Lord. So much so that his fame spread to other nations. As stories of his strength were told he became proud. His strength became his weakness because he stopped seeking and depending on God. He forgot that he was ‘marvellously helped’ (v15) by God and that was why he had become strong. The writer tells us,

‘But when he was strong, he grew proud to his destruction.’ (v 16).

A symptom of his spiritual condition was his decision to take the role of the priests and offer unauthorised incense on the altar. He knew this was wrong and when challenged by Azariah and the other priests, he became angry. How dare they challenge him! God then struck him with leprosy. This was a punishment but also a mercy; to humble him and cause him to seek God again.

In the new testament, the apostle Paul describes his ‘thorn in the flesh’ (2 Corinthians 12.7). This ‘thorn’, whatever it was, was very painful. So painful, that he pleaded with the Lord to take it away. But God told Paul, ‘My grace is sufficient for you in weakness’ (v9). This thorn was to stop Paul becoming proud due to his heavenly visions. Therefore, Paul said, ‘He would boast all the more gladly of his weaknesses. So that the power of Christ may rest in me’… ‘For when I am weak, then I am strong.’ (v9-10)

Perhaps you are reading this today and feel a sense of weakness: something of which you are ashamed; a physical, mental or emotional pain; a circumstance of life. This weakness may be the very thing that has kept you calling out to God, depending on his help. If the Lord give you physical health and material blessings, do not be distracted from him. In your ‘strength’ do not become proud. If there is something in your life that has caused you to feel weak, pray that God would use that very thing to demonstrate his strength and power in you. There is a day coming when it will be gone. And we will see the one who,

‘Was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God.’ (2 Cor 13 v 4)
Called to Serve – Exodus 36

In the book of Exodus, we read about the construction of the Tabernacle. The Tabernacle was the tent of meeting where God would dwell amongst the people during their time in the wilderness. God had very specific instructions for how it ought to be constructed and designed and had called specific people to lead this project. In Chapters 31 and 35-36 we read about two men with very memorable names: Bezalel and Oholiab.

‘
See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, 4 to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, 5 in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft. 6 And behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan.’ (Ex 31:2-6)

We see these men called personally by God for the work and equipped with what they required for the task. They needed the empowering of the Spirit of God. They could not do it without his presence. They were given gifts that involved artistic design and craftsmanship to design the tabernacle as God intended.

When we think of gifts given to the Church, some will automatically think of preaching, music or evangelism. Others will likely think of prophecy, healing or tongues. Yet here, these men were gifted by God for this work with gifts of a different kind. These gifts were practical, ‘working men’ gifts, creative and useful and necessary for the specific tasks God had given them.

This is a wonderful reminder to us that God has made each of us different and equipped each part of his church for different tasks and callings. We all have a part to play in serving God and his Church. 1 Corinthians 12 makes this clear:

‘Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.’ (1 Cor 12:4-5)

Although Bezalel and Oholiab were called to lead this work, the rest of the people were also called to be involved in different ways. The people came with so many freewill offerings for the construction work that they had to be told to stop! The craftsmen tell Moses,

“The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the Lord has commanded us to do.” (Ex 36:5)

So, Moses has to restrain them from bringing more. Maybe they didn’t have the craftsmanship and artistic ability, but they brought what they could. In their generosity they brought more than was even necessary.

There are many different ways to take part in what God is doing in and through his church. Some are called to lead, others to be present and help practically, while others still are called to faithfully pray or give financially, using what the Lord has blessed them with to be a blessing to others. All aspects are essential and at different times in different ways, we all must play our part and hear God’s calling.

The people in Exodus were ‘stirred’ to the work by the Spirit of God. May God stir each of us to serve Christ and his Church with the gifts, resources and time he has given us for his glory and may we be wise in discerning what God would have us do.

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details here) for our Sunday Morning Service starting at 11:15am. For your first visit, we recommend arriving early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. We also serve tea and coffee before the service, so feel free to come from around 10:45 and enjoy refreshments.

Accessibility: There is wheelchair access from the side door along the lane on the right hand side of the building as you approach, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. Please let one of the Welcome Team know on your arrival and they will help you. There is an accessible toilet in the main foyer.

Our Services:

Sunday Mornings

Our main Sunday service begins at 11:15am with a welcome from one of our team members and notices for the week. Then follows a time of sung worship, led by our band. We typically have 5 or 6 songs lasting approximately 25 minutes. Please feel free to stand or sit during the worship time. There is usually a brief children's talk or video before one of our leaders or preaching team will give a sermon that is Bible based and that we can apply to our everyday life. We then finish with a final worship song. There is an opportunity to receive prayer at the end of the service with one of our prayer team.
Our Sunday morning service is usually streamed live to our FaceBook page and our YouTube page.

On the first Sunday of the month we normally celebrate The Lord's Supper as part of our morning worship.
With regard to any children who may have stayed in the service we regard it as the responsibility of the parent or guardian of any child to decide whether or not it is appropriate for the child to take part in Communion.

What about my kids?

Our Sunday morning service includes Sunday School and Bible Class:

Creche (pre-school) in the rear hall through the door to the left of the platform.

Sunday School (Primary 1-7)

Bible Class (Secondary 1-3)

Children stay with their parent or grown-up at the start of the service for the welcome, songs and notices. We really value worshipping God all together as a family. At the end of the children's talk someone will announce that it’s time for the younger members to go to their various groups.

The kids group activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, Bible stories, music, craft, etc. Please pick your children up as soon as the service finishes.

On Sundays at 7:00pm we meet in a more informal Café Church style service around tables.
The service includes a time of worship, discussion, prayer, and a member of the preaching team gives a word. Refreshments are served. We also include a time of communion as part of our worship except for the first Sunday of the month.

Getting Connected

Small Groups

Small Groups are as important in the life of the church as Sunday worship. Large group teaching can be best applied in smaller settings and all of us need the support, encouragement and prayer of friends. Smaller groups can also be more effective in reaching out to our communities.Meeting formats vary but generally include the four Ws: Welcome,Worship, Word, Witness. That means time to relax and unwind, time spent worshipping God, time studying and discussing the previous Sunday’s teaching and time thinking about application and praying for each other and for others outside the group. The number and composition of the Small Groups changes from time to time and all are always open to visitors and new folk. When numbers become too large the Small Group may split to form two groups.

The following is a list of current Small Groups as of 2025:
Tuesday: 7:30 pm in Finstown (weekly) – talk to Ian and Lindsay.
Wednesday: 7:30pm in Finstown (weekly) – talk to Paul and Caroline.

Serving and Volunteering

If you want to get involved in the life of the church and help us make Sundays run smoothly, you can sign up to serve on a team. We usually have a special Ministries Sunday each year with stalls for each of the ministries we are involved in, both for the church and in the community. See our Join A Team page for more information.
