# A New Look for Staking: 3-Month Retainment Takes the Lead

Polkadot staking just got a bigger picture. Our latest update brings a fresh **two-row bar design** to validator and operator lists, putting identity, performance, and retainment into clearly labelled sections that are easier to scan and compare.

The biggest change goes beyond the new look: **three-month retainment is now the default**, with a **1 month / 3 month toggle on every row**. Start with a broader view of an operator's behaviour, then check the latest month with a single click. Each row has its own control, so you can explore one validator or operator without changing the others.

Three-month retainment stats are also now shown by default in the [Polkadot Cloud Nomination Manager](https://nominate.polkadot.cloud/), bringing the same broader view to managing your nominations.

_A clearer layout brings activity, self-stake, and retainment together in each validator entry._

## Three months first, one month whenever you want

One month can tell you what happened recently. Three months gives that result more context.

The new **3 month** view combines the available monthly retainment results within the latest three-month reporting window. It gives you a broader starting point when exploring how consistently an operator keeps rewards within its publicly linked accounts. The **1 month** view shows the latest reported month, making it easy to check whether recent behaviour differs from the longer view.

To compare the two, find a validator or operator, select **1 month** in its retainment section, then select **3 month** to return to the broader view. The choice applies only to that entry. You can keep one row on 1 month while the rows around it stay on 3 month.

Retainment ordering in the validator and operator browsers also uses the three-month figures. Switching an individual row to 1 month changes the figures shown in that row; it does not reorder the list. That keeps your place while you explore.

## A new two-row design for validators and operators

Each bar now has a dedicated header row above its details. On validator lists, the sections are **Identity**, **Performance**, and **Retainment**, with the period toggle placed directly beside the retainment heading.

Below those headings, you can scan the validator's activity chart, active or waiting status, APY, health, and self-stake alongside its retainment figures. The grouping makes it easier to follow a single validator across the row or compare the same information between several validators.

Operators get the same treatment, with **Identity**, **Validators**, and **Retainment** sections. Validator counts, active status, combined self-stake, and average self-stake sit together, while retainment has its own heading and period control.

## Prefer cards? The period controls are there too

The larger card layout also includes the new retainment toggle. You get more space for the activity chart and a dedicated retainment section underneath, with the same three-month starting point and independent choice for each card.

For validators, changing the period updates all four figures in the retainment section together:

- **Retainment rate** compares the growth in publicly linked account balances with the rewards earned over the period, indicating how much was retained.
- **Compound rate** compares the increase in a validator's own self-stake with its rewards, indicating how much was compounded.
- **Self-stake change** shows how much the validator's own bonded stake increased or decreased.
- **Net outflow** shows any net decrease in the tracked account balances over the period.

These figures help you understand an operator's behaviour alongside its activity and self-stake. They reflect balance changes, so they are useful signals rather than a transaction-by-transaction account of where every reward went.

## Clear labels for the history available

The selected period and the amount of available history can differ. If a validator or operator has only one or two months of data within the three-month window, the heading shows **1 Month Retainment** or **2 Month Retainment**, even with **3 month** selected.

_Here, 3 month is selected, but the heading makes clear that the available result contains one month of data._

_Selecting 1 month shows the latest monthly result. When only one month is available, both views can show the same figures._

If a figure is unavailable, it appears as a dash. A dash is different from a measured 0%. For a closer look at individual months, use the retainment history shortcut beside the heading in a validator bar, or the **Retainment** button on its card.

## Explore the bigger picture

This update brings the [retainment statistics introduced in August](/blog/en/validator-retainment-stats-now-live) and the [Operators page](/blog/en/new-polkadot-operators-page) into a clearer, more flexible browsing experience. More context is visible from the start, and a closer look is always one click away.
