The first in 1960, on the initiative of Professor Jean-Baptiste Aquarone, from the University of Montpellier, enthusiastically supported by Portuguese and foreign artists, doctors, writers and journalists. Still in the 60s, a new candidacy is presented by Professor Goran Hammarstrom, from the University of Uppsala, Sweden. In 1978, he is again proposed for the Swedish Academy prize, with the support of prominent personalities from Portuguese intellectual life and the poet Vicente Aleixandre, Nobel Prize in Literature 1977.</p><p class="content_center__four_columns description">In 1969, he refuses the National Grand Prize for Literature, as it was a distinction from the dictatorial regime. On December 26, 1978, he is honored for his 50 years of literary life, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, on the initiative of David Mourão-Ferreira, Secretary of State for Culture. In 1979, the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra pays him a tribute. In 1990, he is honored by the Goethe Institut of Coimbra.</p></section><section class="animated_section grid_layout "><blockquote class="content_center__four_columns"> (...) he had learned that the path of art is slow and painful, and that in it only sustained effort truly counts. After the fourth grade exam, which he takes with distinction, his father gives him a cavaquinho, the first gift of his life. On the day he receives the prize, Torga is 61 years old. He compares the distinction to a new mandolin, and reveals that he accepted the prize with a clear conscience, believing in his father's joy in the other world.</p><p><strong>1976 - International Poetry Prize of the Knokke-Heist Biennials</strong>, which he receives in Brussels, on June 6, 1977.</p><p><strong>1980 - Morgado de Mateus Prize</strong>
1, ex-aequo with the Brazilian poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade.</p><p><strong>1981 - Montaigne Prize</strong> awarded by the F.V.S. Foundation of Hamburg, Germany.</p><p><strong>1989 - Camões Prize</strong>, the most important award in the Portuguese-speaking world. He receives the prize during the June 10 celebrations in Ponta Delgada, in the Azores. He is the first personality to be distinguished with the Camões Prize.</p><p><strong>1992 - Literary Life Prize of the Portuguese Writers Association</strong><br/>He receives the prize on March 19, in Lisbon. The actress Beatriz Costa, absent from the ceremony for health reasons, wishes him "happiness for the Nobel." Mário Soares, president of the Republic, emphasizes the importance of Torga's words and work and his fight for freedom.</p><p><strong>1992 - Figure of the Year 1991 Prize of the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents</strong><br/>At 84, he receives the prize at Casino do Estoril on July 8.</p><p><strong>1992 - Ãcureuil Prize for Foreign Literature from the Bordeaux Book Fair</strong><br/>He receives it in Coimbra, at the City Hall, on September 14, with a presentation by Jorge Amado, who states that it is Torga's immense work that honors the prize and not the opposite.
