1967. the sport newcastle story is a fascinating tale spanning seven decades.\n\nin the early days, it was a very different organisation and few could have predicted it would become one of the major players in north east sport by the turn of the century.\n\nthe big change of direction came after 10 years when the gala dinner was first held. the funds raised gave the sports council the chance to hand out grants to young athletes and encourage the best of grassroots sport.\n\n\n\nthe late malcolm dix, centre, oversees prince philip presenting jackie milburn with the wilkinson sword. credit: reach plc\n\nmuch of this new impetus was due to the appointment of the late malcolm dix, who took over as chairman in 1977.\n\nfor the next 40 years, malcolm filled just about every role in the organisation, including secretary and president.\n\nhis lifetime commitment to local sport helped hundreds of young people along the path to sporting success.\n\nmalcolm also took charge of the gala dinner â introducing not just an annual sports personality award but also the wilkinson sword and frank brennan trophy, which marked outstanding contributions.\n\n\n\nwilkinson sword winner sir brendan foster (right). credit: great run company\n\nthe achievements of many of the region's earliest sporting stars were acknowledged with the wilkinson sword presented to world cup winner jack charlton, the twin pillars of newcastle united's fa cup triumph joe harvey and bob moncur plus olympic 10,000m bronze medallist brendan foster.\n\nthe most emotive presentation of the wilkinson sword was to jackie milburn by his royal highness, prince philip, duke of edinburgh, in 1987. wor jackie died soon after.\n\nat the start of the new millennium, the organisation was rebranded as sport newcastle to reflect its modern role and renewed ambition.\n\n\n\ntyneside lives and breathes football so it is perhaps unsurprising that, on a staggering 15 occasions, a newcastle united player or coach has won our sports personality award.\n\nthe breadth of winners from the club has been huge, but perhaps the most romantic of them was the very first nufc winner.\n\nin 1979 forward alan shoulder â the pitman who rose through the ranks after playing for blyth spartans â picked up the award for his on-field successes. \n\n\n\npaul gascoigne (right). credit: reach plc\n\nhe was followed by a whole host of famous magpies with eddie howe the most recent winner from the club.\n\nunitedâs current boss followed two-time winners peter beardsley, paul gascoigne and alan shearer.\n\nin fact, shearer is not only united's all-time record goalscorer but he remains a patron of sport newcastle.\n\nkevin keegan, meanwhile, has won the award on a record three occasions â twice as a player and once as a manager.\n\n\n\nkevin keegan (right). credit: reach plc\n\nand it's not just the sports personality award that nufc have picked up over the years. sir john hall and sir bobby robson â the club's two most famous knights â both received the wilkinson sword, as did former manager jack charlton.\n\nthroughout sport newcastle's five decades, rugby union has changed dramatically. not only did the game become professional during the 1990s but the newcastle falcons also helped produce the most famous player in the world.\n\njonny wilkinson, first recognised by sport newcastle as a rising star, not only won the premiership title with the newcastle falcons but also kicked the winning drop goal during the 2003 world cup final.\n\nhe was named our sports personality in both 2002 and 2004. and a man key to wilkinsonâs success, his mentor steve black, collected the award alongside the ex-england fly-half in 2015 as they walked away as joint winners.\n\n\n\njonny wilkinson. credit: reach plc\n\nrob andrew not only led the falcons into the professional era but also delivered the 1997-98 premiership title and established the kingston park outfit as a top flight club. \n\nandrew also won the sports personality award, as did ex-director of rugby dean richards. \n\nbefore professionalism arrived, sport newcastle also recognised amateur rugby union success.\n\nthe late gosforth and england prop colin white, who led his club to two famous twickenham cup final victories, collected the award during the 1970s.\n\nformer rfu presidents danie serfontein and richard appleby have also been recognised for their contribution to grassroots sport.\n\nin 2023 sarah hunter mbe was presented with the wilkinson sword â the north shields star recognised for revolutionising womenâs rugby union.\n\n\n\nfabulous flournoy. credit: reach plc\n\nif there is one sport which newcastle has excelled at over the past few decades, it's basketball.\n\nsince 2005, the newcastle eagles have collected an astonishing 27 trophies making the vertu motors arena outfit the most successful sports side during sport newcastle's 50 year history.\n\nfabulous flournoy mba may have been born in new york city â and is now a fixture on the philadelphia 76ers coaching staff in the nba â but he is most definitely an adopted geordie.\n\nas a player and then head coach flournoy played a key role in leading the eagles to bbl dominance and twice collected our sports personality award.\n\n\n\nnewcastle eagles' darius defoe spearheading the club's 2023-24 european campaign. credit enbl\n\nin 2016, the eagles were recognised for their quadruple winning 2014-15 clean sweep campaign as âprinceâ charles smith collected the sports personality award and managing director paul blake the wilkinson sword.\n\nthe club also received the frank brennan trophy as they dominated the awards night.\n\nin 2021 âmr 27â darius defoe picked up the rebranded sporting achievement award â now our top honour at the gala dinner.\n\nand the following year head coach marc steutel won the stan calvert award after leading the great britain national team to a string of impressive wins over crack european opposition.\n\n\n\ngreat britain and newcastle eagles head coach marc steutel. credit: british basketball\n\nwhen elswick harriersâ mike mcleod won the first newcastle sports personality award in 1978, it began a lifelong association with sport newcastle.\n\nthe elswick express won the award on two further occasions reflecting a career that brought an olympic silver medal at 10,000m and victory in the inaugural great north run.\n\nmike is still a vice president of sport newcastle, while his son, england international athlete ryan received support from the charity as an emerging star.\n\n\n\njonathan edwards. credit: reach plc\n\nworld champion 1,500m runner steve cram may have represented jarrow and supported sunderland but the 1986 sports personality was living in the city of newcastle when he smashed world records and won olympic silver.\n\ntriple jumper jonathan edwards was an adopted geordie who was the first olympic gold medallist the city could honour when he won his second sports personality title in 2001. \n\nnewcastle has become a worldwide focal point for athletics thanks to the annual showcase of the great north run and organisers nova international were rewarded with the frank brennan trophy which has also saluted the work of legendary physio, norman anderson, and a string of coaches.\n\n\n\nchris cook. credit: reach plc\n\nnewcastle still haven't got a 50m pool but the lack of world class facilities hasn't stopped swimmers making a splash on the international stage.\n\nformer newcastle university medical student kevin boyd was the 1989 sports personality after the freestyler won silver and bronze at the commonwealth games.\n\nin the late 90s susan rolph picked up the city's top award two years running as she won double commonwealth games gold plus world and european titles.\n\na decade later 2008 sports personality chris cook repeated the commonwealth double in the breaststroke sprints. \n\nboth rolph and cook were products of the phenomenal success achieved by city of newcastle swimming coach ian oliver, who received the wilkinson sword the same year as cook. sport newcastle has regularly granted aid to the club's top talents.\n\n\n\nglenn mccrory\n\nsport newcastle has always looked beyond the city boundaries to embrace and support sporting achievement from across the north east.\n\nboxer glenn mccrory became a local legend when he won the ipf world cruiserweight crown in 1989 â the first north east fighter to win a world title.\n\nglenn's continued involvement with sport beyond his native county durham earned him a unique treble of all three of sport newcastle's major awards and he's still one of our most consistent supporters.\n\nthe north east is a hotbed of local rivalry, yet the amazing rise of durham county cricket club has unified the region in admiration and support.\n\nengland internationals steve harmison and paul collingwood have won individual awards, while the club itself has won the frank brennan trophy four times as the silverware regularly headed to the riverside.\n\nformer chairman don robson and inspirational coach jeff cook were also honoured. \n\n\n\ndurham cricket club. credit: dccc\n\nthe old durham wasps ice hockey team dominated their sport in the 1980s and early 1990s and their 1992 award saluted their second british and premier league double in a row.\n\nsince sport newcastle gained charitable status, its stated brief has been further extended into the region â in time to recognise south tyneside teacher katie mclean, who led england women's rugby union team to 2014 world cup glory.\n\n\n\nvera selby. credit: reach plc\n\nfootball may be the first love in newcastle but the sporting life of the city has impressive breadth.\n\ngosforthâs vera selby was the first ever women's world snooker champion in 1976 and was our sports personality when she regained her world crown in 1981.\n\njenny lee smith was another early trailblazer for women's sport, this time on the golf course. our 1982 sports personality won the first ladies british open as an amateur, before turning professional and twice triumphing on the ladies european tour.\n\nfew sportsmen showed more geordie grit than british featherweight champion boxer john davison. the 1992 sports personality was a genuine character â a late arrival to his sport, who won two international belts and was a real force of nature in the ring. \n\n\n\nstephen miller in rio\n\nthree times paralympic champion stephen miller has been a standard bearer for the enormous progress in disability sport. \n\nhis 2007 sports personality award was unique as it was presented jointly alongside his mother and coach ros.\n\nboth have continued to provide expert advice on disability sport to sport newcastle.\n\nthe frank brennan trophy has also recognised success in: ice skating with six-time british champion joanne conway (1986); judo with olympic and double world champion diane bell (1987); showjumping with the olympic silver medallist karen straker; and speedway with newcastle diamonds who were premier league winners in 2001. 58d against judd \\[trump\\] even though i didn't feel like i was playing great in the qualifiers. i realise i have a few things to work on but iâll be ready.\n\n**sn**: how do you feel about the world championships staying in sheffield?\n\n**gw**: overall, it's a great thing. keeping the world championships at the crucible is brilliant and deep down i think thatâs what we all wanted. nobody is saying that theyâd rather it was somewhere else just for the money â thatâs not the case at all. but i do look at it from both sides. for a few years now there has been talk of a new crucible â perhaps built on the same site â that could accommodate 2,500 or even 3,000 fans. i think everyone would agree that would be the dream. it would be the sweet spot in terms of satisfying demand for tickets, increasing revenue for the game and, of course, generating greater prize money. so exactly the same as we have now â just bigger and better! i think whatâs been announced is the best that could be achieved to keep the worlds in sheffield. is it a compromise? maybe. but i wouldnât want the world championships to move to saudi or china because the crucible is where it belongs. if it was a choice between moving away or making the best of the situation in sheffield iâd have chosen the second option every time, all day long.\n\n**sn**: how do you assess your season?\n\n**gw**: not great but not bad! i was disappointed to lose the wuhan open final 10-9. it was a match i felt i should have won. then in the next chinese tournament i was playing well against shaun murphy in the semi-final before he came out of nowhere and just went berserk! i felt a little bit hard done by and it did feel like a missed opportunity. there have been good moments but in and around those moments there have been a lot of bad days. in terms of the level iâve been playing at for some time now it hasnât been good enough but iâm still inside the worldâs top 20 on the one-year list and iâve qualified for the world championships. as a professional snooker player thatâs always how you want to end your season â playing at the biggest tournament of all.\n\n\n\ngary wilson receiving the wilkinson sword from sport newcastle's alan younger\n\n**sn**: at this stage of your career do you feel like youâve settled into a rhythm?\n\n**gw**: no. i don't think i'll ever feel settled until i'm performing more consistently. i know the level i can play at but for the last few years there have only been flashes of my very best snooker. and flashes just arenât good enough. i never expect to play well all of the time â nobody does â but there are plenty of other players in the top 20 who stay at a pretty good level most of the time. their dips in form are nowhere near as bad as mine are. iâve said this many times in the last few years but iâm just searching for that consistency and that next level. i feel like i need to up my level to really get the heart pounding and that doesnât happen as often as it should. i want to get to the point where iâm excited to be part of the tour, excited to be playing in the big games and excited for whatâs to come. i need to play better to enjoy the game more. itâs as simple as that.\n\n**sn**: how do you make that step up and guarantee that enjoyment?\n\n**gw**: i don't know. in one sense, i'm honestly a bit lost. it feels like sometimes you're turning up day after day to the club, doing your job, practising and just wondering what you're actually trying to achieve here. as much as i've said i know there's more there â because i know what i'm capable of and i know how i can play â if it's not happening in matches then i wonder why. you can sit and analyse the situation and sometimes and you go âwell is that because my opponents are just making it difficult or is that because i'm making it difficult for myself because of the pressures, knowing that my opponents are good and if you miss they're going to make it difficult for meâ? you're working all of this out and you're wondering why you're not playing to the level that you know you can. i don't really know how or what it is that i can do, other than what i've already tried over the years.\n\n**sn**: are you trying new approaches and listening to fresh advice?\n\n**gw**: i'm speaking to people here and there. i'm trying to take on other perspectives. i'm tr
58ying to look at other players and see what they're doing. i'm trying to look at it from an objective point of view and not just be so blindsided by what i do and what i think is right. at the same time iâm not going to be silly, try everything and be bamboozled by the amount of advice thatâs out there. i've got a strong sense of what i feel is right for me but i'm trying to take on board bits of other things. i'm 40 now and, over the next two or three years, i think, deep down, i just want more than anything to try and find my way, if that makes sense. but my way isn't always clear to me. i'm trying different things from month to month and tournament to tournament and maybe that's why my consistency isn't there. i'm chopping and changing things â whether thatâs looking at my cue action or whether itâs trying to play a certain way or trying to relax more or try more.\n\n**sn**: is playing judd trump in round one at the crucible a positive?\n\n**gw**: when you're at the crucible you don't care who you play. they're all great players at that stage and, honestly, i don't mind who i get drawn against. you can pick out names who are maybe in the bottom end of the top 16, who you wouldn't necessarily associate with being household names but, like me, they have a great opportunity. get drawn against one of the bigger names and it might spur you on to raise your game. the draw, for me, is great. i played judd in the semi-final in 2019 and iâm looking at this week as a rematch. i'll try to treat it like that, try to get my own back and see if i can use that match seven years ago as a bit of inspiration. i've known judd since we were kids so i'm sure he knows it shouldn't be an easy game if i turn up and play as well as i can. if, as the lower seed, you can get through the first round then you pick up your opponentâs side of the draw and you can see a clear route through to the later stages. itâs an added incentive. round one and the rest of the tournament are almost like two separate competitions. get over the first hurdle and thereâs a real chance to go deep into the worlds.\n\n**watch gary live on the bbc and tnt sports from 10am on tuesday.** news"},{title:"Getting to know... decathlete Luke Pichler",url:"/getting-to-know-luke-pichler",excerpt:"Sport Newcastle loves to invest in the stars of the future and our Platinum athletes are already well on the way to major success",search:"getting to know... decathlete luke pichler sport newcastle loves to invest in the stars of the future and our platinum athletes are already well on the way to major success **multi-sport star lukeâs our latest platinum award winner and if youâre wondering just what heâs done to deserve our most prestigious package of support then here are the headlines:**\n\n·      in 2025 decathlete luke won gold at the university of birmingham combined events festival with a new personal best.\n\n·      that brilliant display in brum was a new north east under 20 record⦠for 18-year-old luke!\n\n·      a few weeks after making an impression in the midlands, luke was at it again â bettering his own record and finishing second in his age group at the england athletics combined events championship.\n\n·      after a breakout year on the national stage itâs no surprise that his country came calling. after winning an england vest, lukeâs set his sights on running, jumping and throwing for gb as an 8,000-point decathlete!\n\n**so who is this generational talent? hereâs all you need to know:**\n\n·      lukeâs north tyneside-based and a member of blyth running club.\n\n·      this summer heâll sit his a level exams in geography, psychology and pe.\n\n·      lukeâs a newcastle united fan and loves to relax on family walks with his dog.\n\n·      heâs a big fan of indie rockers radiohead and tame impala.\n\n·      lukeâs favourite films are back to the future and dune.\n\n**with 10 events to choose from which are lukeâs favourites:**\n\n·      he loves the 110m hurdles best of all and is ranked #1 in the event for his age group indoors and out.\n\n·      luke likes the pole vault â the hardest discipline to master but the most rewarding.\n\n·      heâs _trying_ to enjoy the 400m and the discus⦠watch this space.\n\n**and what do we have to say about luke pichler:**\n\n·      âheâs a dedicated athlete, who has amazing resilience and talent. lukeâs well supported by a committed coaching team at blyth running club and is undoubtedly one of the best young athletes to emerge from the region in the last few years.â (_mike booth, vice chair, sport newcastle_)\n\n so thereâs the lowdown on luke! our platinum award
