1const e=`
The narrative of Russian propaganda has begun changing. Attacks on Mariupol's residential areas, for which Ukrainian artillery had previously been blamed, were now being explained by the elimination of Ukrainian military positions.

According to the Mariupol City Council, the Russians killed 1,582 civilians during the first 12 days of the blockade.

The night of March 11-12, 2022 was very cold. Maryna Artemova and her son woke up at around 01:30 a.m. in the basement, and the boy asked to go and warm up in the apartment. The windows were still intact there, ensuring an imaginary sense of relative safety. The family woke up to the shelling, which began at 4:00 a.m. They quickly gathered, and the boy went behind the partition wall. Maryna did not – the blast wave tore a metal door from its hinges and threw it at her.

I realized the door had fallen onto me, pinning me, but did not harm my son. I remained conscious, I knew a little time had passed, but I had not lost consciousness. I saw the neighbors coming up – there were two families left on the floor, their door was blocked, a piece of the wall had fallen in front of it. I began calling for help, knowing that there were still people on the upper floors. In those seconds, almost immediately, while I was lying under that door, I heard another hit, after which the glass shattered, and our balcony fell,” Maryna recalls those terrible moments. [1]When Artemova and her son got out of the high-rise building, it turned out that the neighbors who went out earlier had received shrapnel wounds.
`,a="Maria Petrenko's story",t=`
Some people came to stay by the fire in the yard. Some companies gathered there, people were sitting, talking, communicating, and having a pretty good time – that was the image I saw. Here was my house, then in the neighboring yard, where people were sitting, someone took a car, turned on the music as if it were a holiday – somebody's birthday or something like that, and across the road, a shell exploded in another yard and a person was killed. Here people were sitting, chatting, as if everything was fine, and meanwhile just across the road, they were digging a shallow grave in a yard and burying someone. [2]
`,i='

',o="Oleksiy “Oswald” Bratchenko",s="Tank commander, Azov",n="
We left Azovstal at 8:20 a.m., arrived at the location, and after another 20 minutes we saw a group of enemy vehicles. If I remember correctly, there were five T-72 main battle tanks. The battle lasted five to ten - minutes. Our crew tried to maneuver. Several shells whizzed past us, but then a guided round, the decent ones that the Russians have, partially pierced the armor on my side. We were lucky the hatch was open, the flammable gases vented out of it. I was knocked out as I hit my head hard and got burned. I went in and found Yuriy “Taksist (Taxi Driver)” and Andriy “Korin (Root)” inside. They gave me some water and took me to Azovstal, where I met my crew. They were sure that I could not have survived the explosion. It would be an understatement to say that they felt guilty. I was examined at Azovstal and then transported to the 555th hospital. Since 8 p.m. on February 23, we had come under heavy artillery and MLRS fire. While we were retreating through Hnutove, we were attacked by MB-21 Grad rockets. Our BTR APC was damaged but we did not have any dead. After the retreat, our engineers blew up the bridge, and we set up a defense line along the river, where we waited for our forces coming from the Vodyane area. Then we were fighting in the fields for a few more days and finally moved to the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works.
",M="
At that moment, our battalion had almost no ammunition left, only two magazines for each rifle. We were searching for diesel fuel, water, and ammunition... We asked the Azov fighters, and they shared with us. The Russians were probably afraid to storm Ilyich Iron and Steel Works, so they tried to break through to Mariupol through a checkpoint near the plant along the Volnovakha-Mariupol highway. The National Guardsmen and Azov fighters were defending the checkpoint. The road was blocked by a ditch, and there was a line of trenches 400-500 meters long to the east. We, the marines, were stationed there. We dug the trenches with almost just our hands and tree branches, as we had no shovels. Moreover we did it under fire.

On March 11 we were visited by Sergeant “Bitsukha (Biceps),” an Azov commander. They had found an SPG recoilless rifle somewhere and were looking for someone who knew how to use it. We had to move forward to support their group. There were Russian warehouses in that direction, and the enemy felt quite safe there, so the Azov fighters wanted to “give them a proper morning workout.” I was the commander of the SPG detachment and accordingly knew how to use it well, and so I went with them. We were successful. “Bitsukha (Biceps)” was satisfied and promised to repeat the mission.

At 6:00 a.m. on March 12, the checkpoint came under mortar fire. One round struck the roof of the building where Colonel Apukhtin was working on the radio station. The other hit the trench with Bitsukha and another Azov fighter [Kostyantyn “Ace” Druz]. They had a container buried in the ground, with slabs on top, that is, a real field bunker. Alas, they were a couple of meters short of making it to jump inside. The mortar round hit the trench wall, and they were cut up by fragments.

",T="Mykola Mysko firing an SPG (photo taken before 2022)",S='
photo from Mykola Mysko
',j='
From March 12, a mass exodus of Mariupol residents began via the defense sector westward toward Zaporizhzhia. Someone told me there was communication at the “1,000 trifles” store near the Kyivstar telecom office. I went there. I thought I knew my city but when there were almost no people on the street and everything was damaged, it became more difficult to navigate. I kept asking people whether I was heading in the right direction. Building facades stood stripped bare – hollow shells devoid of windows.

Then planes were already circling over the city and dropping bombs. The explosions were very powerful. The bombs fell somewhere far away but the blastwaves could be felt several kilometers away. The shelling was constant, and I moved in short bursts from house to house. I had almost reached the intersection of Budivelnykiv Avenue and Myru Avenue when another shelling began. Something exploded in the very center of the intersection. I managed to take cover behind the stoop of a pharmacy. I heard a terrible high-pitched whistle, then a nearby explosion, I thought it would blow me away. I was lucky, and the fragments flew in the other direction. Everything was covered in smoke. Then I saw wounded people walking from that side. A young man was walking with a bicycle, blood was dripping from his arm onto the asphalt. At that moment, I managed to call my daughter. Then I realized it was better to write a text message. I wrote it, then turned off the phone. After a while, you turn it on and get a response.
