Suddenly Olena rushed in: “Why are you still here? Let's go!” I quickly packed and took my animals. Earlier, we had been writing “children” all night long. People were saying that there should be such a marking on the car as well as white ribbons. We had nothing to write with. So we used nail polish. We quickly got into the cars, put the signs, and tied the ribbons. A whole column was forming. We were ordered to take off our white ribbons. No one knew what was happening in Ukraine. Only when we made it out, I learned that Kyiv Oblast and Chernihiv Oblast had been occupied. It was a shock for me. I was sure that all the horrible things were happening in Donetsk Oblast, mostly in Mariupol, as always. I also thought that we would quickly get to Ukrainian territory. I couldn't even imagine there would be 22 checkpoints and we would have to go all the way to Zaporizhzhia. We were driving and thinking we would soon get to safety, but we were wrong. It was an awful disappointment.

The first Russian checkpoint was just outside Mariupol. There were very young guys there, giggling. They were having fun. One was from the DPR, it was clear from his accent that he was a local. They asked for our documents, and Olena showed them her passport in Diia [Ukrainian mobile application for IDs]. It was obvious that they were highly uncivilized and didn't know that documents could be in electronic form. There were a lot from the Caucasus. Some spoke Russian fluently but some called for help as they couldn't put two words together. They pretended to be our rescuers. They were saying something like “womans, we help you” or “it danger there, go other.” They all were wearing white armbands. Then we realized that these were to identify Russians.

We didn't manage to get to Ukrainian territory that day. It was already dark. We tried to keep driving but they stopped us. We all were forced to stay on the highway. It was 10 degrees below zero (Celsius) outside, we didn't have enough fuel, and there was no gas station available. We couldn't get warm in the car, as we had to turn off the engine or we wouldn't have made it out. One car had no windows. Using the charge remaining, I hysterically called to Lviv. By some miracle, they found contacts of people who could shelter us in the nearby Verkhni Krynytsi Village. [3]
`,svitovi_zmi_pro_mariupol:M,"15032022_bbc_newszhakhlyvi":'
🌎 · 15.03.2022 · BBC News

Horrific conditions in Mariupol - Ukraine’s city under siege

New pictures from Ukraine’s besieged port city of Mariupol reveal the terrible conditions faced by its 500,000 residents.
