Grammar second.
138
Most language courses begin with a textbook page, a list of vocabulary and a grammar rule. Students memorise, repeat and forget.
139
At Natalislang we do it differently. From the very first hour, the student is speaking â guided conversation, real questions, real answers. Grammar is introduced not as a rule to memorise but as a tool to explain something the student is already trying to say.
140
The result is that students leave every class having actually used the language â not just studied it.
141
142
"The first 20 hours are almost entirely oral. By the time a student sees something written down, they can already say it."
143
144
145
146 This is how a typical programme develops from the very first class â for a complete beginner: 147
148
01 Personal pronouns and possessives â with your hands 149
The very first thing a beginner learns is personal pronouns â I, you, he, she â taught physically, using hand gestures to connect each pronoun to a person. Immediately after, possessive adjectives follow the same logic. The connection to English is made explicit from the start, so students see the pattern rather than memorising isolated
149words.
150
151
152 02 Question words â the key to real conversation 153
Who, what, where, when, why, how â these are introduced early because they are the engine of conversation. A student who can ask a question can keep talking. From the first hour, students are forming real questions, not just answering them.
154
155
156 03 Ser and Estar â the essential Spanish distinction 157
The difference between ser and estar is one of the first things that confuses English speakers. We address it directly and early â with examples, contrasts and immediate practice. Within the first two or three hours, students are using both verbs correctly in real sentences.
158
159
160 04 Days, months, time, descriptions, locations â in dialogue 161
Over the first four hours, vocabulary builds around practical themes: days of the week, months, telling the time, describing people, talking about countries and locations. Everything is practised through guided dialogue â not lists to memorise.
162
163
164 05 Regular verbs â introduced through conversation 165
After approximately four hours of oral work, regular verbs are introduced. By this point the student already has a working vocabulary and can form questions â so the verb system slots into a structure they already understand. Practice is immediately oral: the student uses the new verbs in sentences and questions.
166
167
168 06 The verb card system â student-driven vocabulary 169
Throughout the programme, students work with Natalislang's own verb card system. Each card covers one verb â its forms, its uses, its most common expressions. The student's task is to find the meaning in whichever language is easiest for them. This makes vocabulary acquisition active, not passive.
170
171
172 07 Review before every new chapter 173
Before introducing anything new, the previous material is reviewed â primarily orally. This constant recycling is one of the most important features of the Natalislang method. Nothing is taught once and forgotten. Everything builds on what came before.
174
175
176 08 Periphrastic verbs, future and past tenses â when the student is ready 177
Once the foundations are solid, the programme moves into more complex structures: periphrastic verb forms (going to, wanting to, needing to), the future tense and finally the perfect past. These are introduced progressively â never rushed, always with immediate conversational practice.
178
179
180
181
182
Our own books â developed over 39 years
183
184 185
186
The Natalislang method is inseparable from its materials.
