World politics are changing. Finance is changing. Society is changing. Even history is changing. Royal Historical Society fellow Dominic Green even wrote about how the present shapes the past in the digital era. So, it’s only logical that the TV trade show landscape would also change. Over the years we have seen old markets close down and new markets come up. Just recently, we have seen the demise of MIPTV, the birth of MIP London, and now Content Europe in Facing The EverEvolving TV Trade Show Landscape (Continued on Page 6) (Continued on Page 4) Content Americas is Thinking About a Ticking NATPE Global Content Americas 2026 kicked off the Miami markets yesterday, January 20. The mart will continue for two more days here at the Hilton Downtown Miami hotel. Then, after an 11-day pause, on February 2, we’ll move to Realscreen/NATPE Global for a total of five days at the InterContinental hotel, also here in downtown Miami. Coming at the beginning of the year, and with budgets restored, Content Americas is often used to complete deals initiated at MIP Cancun in November, but not completed because of depleted end-of-the-year budgets. If more negotiations are necessary, NATPE can come to the rescue later on as it offers further opportunities for face-to-face meetings. 92
My 2¢ January 21, 2026 3 Conference topics that buyers and sellers alike would find useful. Stop the presses. Go back to square one and look for new conference topics and panelists. This is how I envision conferences, seminars, and roundtables at international TV markets. For years now I’ve been complaining about the disconnect between the conference rooms and the market floor at TV trade shows. Now is the time to put my “money where my notebook is” and come up with meaningful, enlightened, practical, and useful topics for c
92onferences and seminars, which have become regular fixtures of TV markets. This is because, after reviewing the conference schedules for Miami’s Content Americas, NATPE Global, and MIP London, I envisioned myself indulging in a series of seminars that exhibitors and content buyers alike would find useful and related to their main reason for attending the events — which is buying and selling content rights. These proposed conferences are founded upon my personal conception of universally relevant topics. I’d start with “Buying Related Sports TV Rights,” followed by “Selling Comedy Shows,” “Programming Comedic Shows like Sitcoms, Dramedies, etc.,” and, with U.S. President Donald Trump routinely calling for the firing of comedians from television, I’d suggest: “Is Late Night TV Comedy?” This is to clarify what “comedy” really is. I’d also look for other buying and selling topics like “Buying Religious Programs” (as they relate to various holy days), “Who’s Selling Film/TV Libraries...And Why?” and exploring, “Why Studios Take Orders and Independents Sell?” And, in view of the upheaval in Venezuela, what about a panel of experts exploring what is “Next for Venezuelan Television?” Another subject to analyze would be “Content Developments’ Imperatives and Impediments,” which should be paired up with “Looking Forward to the Upcoming New TV Season,” and the related: “Ad Agencies’ Wants and Needs from TV Channels.” But let’s not neglect the ever-expanding gaming sector, therefore let’s have “Consumer Demand For New Gaming IP: What Rights Holders Need To Know.” Plus, I’d suggest something that has no practical aim, but could still be a major draw: “How TV Programmers Set Social and Cultural Trends.” Then I’d list something that all market participants could benefit from: “How To Make More Money in Show Biz Than Your Spouse in Shoe Biz.” And then, of course, there’s “The Art of the Mart: New Ways of Attending and Benefitting From TV Trade Shows,” since participating at TV markets represent a major expenditure for most companies. And, if we really want to dwell in the financial realm of things, why not stage: “Producers Seeking Mutually Benefitting Distribution Companies.” Finally, for those participants seeking a truly forward-looking “Future of Television” seminar, it would be crucial to recruit media philosopher panelists of the same stature as Canada’s Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980) and Austria’s Karl Popper (1902-1994). The benefit of these ideas is that every above-mentioned topic, subject, and theme is timeless — it returns each year feeling fresh and new. Blending themes of family, loyalty, and hidden truths, Sins & Roses follows Serhat, a man who lost both his father and fortune as a child but built an empire founded on integrity. His seemingly solid world shatters when his wife Berrak conceals a devastating secret and falls into a coma. As Serhat searches for answers, his hardened heart faces an unexpected test with the arrival of Zeynep. 936th Joy Awards, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on January 17. Produced by NTC Medya for MBC Group and adapted from MedYapım’s Turkish series Woman, Salma follows Salma, a young mother who suddenly finds herself facing life alone after the mysterious disappearance of her husband, Jalal. As she struggles to raise her two young children, Salma navigates poverty, emotional trauma, and the loneliness that surrounds her. Salma’s journey offers a powerful and deeply human portrait of Arab mothers confronting life’s harsh realities with resilience and determination. Papis is getting a new adaptation in Greece and Cyprus for Alpha TV. The dramedy tells the story of four fathers who forge a friendship through their daily encounters at their children’s school gate, exploring fatherhood and family relationships from a contemporary perspective. The program had its first local adaptations in Chile, Mexico, and Peru and is now present in more than 25 territories. Gustavo Scaglione, president of the group that acquired Argentina’s Telefe, is at Content Americas. • The panel featuring Netflix’s Carolina Leconte, TIS Studios’ Samuel Duque, and Underground Producciones’ Sebastián Ortega delved into the best strategies for co-productions and content licensing with Netflix. Leconte emphasized that there is no specific formula, business model or set of characteristics that make a project a perfect fit for Netflix. In particular, for co-productions based on local Latin American IPs with strong cultural and regional identities, there is no need for Netflix to acquire rights for the entire world. Not only would such an acquisition be costly, but a local player could handle a regional adaptation — for instance, in Asia — more effectively. ish the antagonism between the two market organizers — the London-based C21 publishing company (which organizes Content), and the Toronto-based Brunico (which organizes NATPE). In addition to publishing various trade publications, both organizations also run several TV trade shows. In order to better focus on NATPE Global in Miami, last month, Brunico announced that it would be discontinuing (or “pausing”) its NATPE Budapest TV market for Central and Eastern Europe. In terms of participation, Content Americas’ official figures indicate 851 buyers and 132 exhibitors. As for the number of delegates, the expectation is close to 2,100 people. Regarding the program, Content Americas features 50 speakers scattered among 23 conferences that take place during the same market floor hours. The Rose d’Or Latinos awards ceremony was held last night, followed by the opening party; and tomorrow, January 22, the Worldwide Audiovisual Women’s Association (WAWA) will host their Woman of the Year afternoon presentation (which, this year, takes place during Content instead of NATPE), followed by the Content Americas closing cocktail party and pitch winner announcement. For its part, NATPE Global will benefit from Realscreen’s unscripted crowd, which, together with the representatives of the 100 exhibiting companies and 600 buyers at NATPE, will bring the number of participants to an expected 1,800 TV executives. Last year, 550 participants from the Summit remained for NATPE. Among the NATPE participants will be 67 speakers who will preside over 26 conferences. The NATPE gala will take place on February 5, the day after the market floor opens for business. Realscreen Summit will feature 123 speakers for 23 conferences over two days, with February 4 overlapping with NATPE. Not being much of a real brick-and-mortar market, Realscreen Summit will revolve around talks (with some speakers shared with NATPE), an opening cocktail party, and an awards ceremony. On the market side, configurations for Content and NATPE will follow the usual patterns, with Content happening in suites on 17 of the hotel’s 21 floors, at the market floor’s booths and tables, as well as in a few boardrooms, all of them located on the floor below the Hilton hotel registration area. NATPE’s market side will c

95
(Continued from Cover) January 21, 2026 6 Portugal. We have seen the pause of NATPE Budapest and the emergence of NEM Dubrovnik. We have seen the demise of DISCOP in Johannesburg and the advent of MIP Africa in Cape Town. We’ve also seen the shifting locations of the AFM (Santa Monica, Las Vegas, Los Angeles) and the creation of the TIFF Market in Toronto. Just three years ago, from the ashes of NATPE, two markets were born: Content Americas and the new NATPE Global — trade shows that we’re now attending in Miami, one after the other, separated by 11 days and many opinions. The TV market is contracting with fewer companies to do international business, but the TV trade show events are splintering into hundreds of smaller events in every corner of the earth. And being small, they don’t need a large number of participants to survive. The digital era promised an online business panacea that did not materialize because buyers got inundated with sales pitches that were and are still impossible to attend to, and sellers became limited in reaching their ever-changing buying universe. For both buyers and sellers, TV trade shows became the only way to meet and interact in person with new prospects. There’s no question that TV trade shows are important. Now more than ever. Old timers remember with fondness, but also with some dismay, how, years ago, during the American syndication era, salespeople had to travel Monday to Friday to make pitches to TV stations throughout the U.S., and ask international TV sales executives if they wanted to go back to a time when they had to fly from, let’s say, Los Angeles to Tokyo, come back and immediately depart for Munich to meet with other clients. TV trade shows reduced, if not outright eliminated, the need to be constantly on the road (or in the sky). Nowadays, it is sufficient to attend three to four markets a year, and be able to make inroads to new territories and still meet with traditional partners. The time-consuming question, however, is how to figure out which markets to attend out of an ever-expanding plethora of events? The Italian Incantesimo (Enchanted) is the jewel of Multicom Entertainment’s recently acquired Victory library. Incantesimo is an Italian-language soap opera and drama anthology-style series set in and around a hospital, focusing on the personal and professional lives of doctors, nurses, clinic staff, and the patients they treat each day, in the vein of Grey’s Anatomy, Doctors, and ER. Incantesimo is one of the longest-running TV series on Italy’s RAI. It ranks third for RAI in most episodes for a single series (588 episodes), and ranks fifth for longest-running scripted series (10 seasons from 1998-2008). The Victory library contains over 30 films and series released from 1992-2007, internationally produced in English, German, Italian, Spanish and more, with highlights such as Shaka Zulu, a 2001 TV movie starring David Hasselhoff, Karen Allen, Omar Sharif, and Grace Jones; Diamond Hunters, a 2001 film starring Alyssa Milano, Roy Scheider, and Sean Patrick Flanery; The Magnificent Ambersons, a 2002 film starring Jennifer Tilly, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Bruce Greenwood; A Long Way Home, a 2003 drama starring Chad Michael Murray, Diane Ladd and Robert Ulrich; John XXIII - The Good Pope, a 2003 biographical drama starting Bob Hoskins; and Ocean Ave., a 2002 teen soap starting Megan Fox and featuring Rebecca Ferguson and Justine Eyre. sual language, and narrative quality. While broadcast TV still relies on longer episode formats and continuity-driven storytelling, there is now a stronger focus on refined pacing, cinematic aesthetics, and internationally competitive storytelling. Many projects are conceived from the outset to be adaptable across both broadcast and digital platforms. VAD: Has content changed for broadcast TV with the advent of streaming? MA: Traditional genres such as family drama, romance, and melodrama remain central, but they are now enriched with deeper character development, more complex conflicts, and contemporary themes. Storytelling has become more layered, with morally nuanced characters and higher emotional stakes. Broadcast TV continues to prioritize broad audience reach and emotional resonance, while integrating narrative sophistication inspired by global streaming trends. VAD: Has your marketing and sales strategy for LatAm changed over the years? MA: We now apply a more targeted and strategic approach, differentiating clearly between free-to-air broadcasters, pay-TV, and streaming platforms. Content positioning, promotional assets, and sales strategies are customized according to platform needs and audience behavior. There is also a stronger emphasis on early market engagement, localized marketing, and long-term partnerships. Latin America remains a key growth region for Turkish drama, and our strategy is focused on sustainable expansion and value-driven collaborations. 96
January 21, 2026 8 Koreans also have grudges against the Japanese, while Japanese villains are no longer in fashion in Hollywood movies. Another group of villains no longer needed in Hollywood consists of Arab-looking actors, recently replaced by Persians. TV Tastes That Change En Masse A recent article in The Wall Street Journal explored a wellknown conundrum: Is it the TV audience whose tastes change over the years, or are TV programmers the ones who decide what the public should or should not watch? The Journal‘s story was about the trend of U.S. viewers preferring to watch solo comic acts over duos and groups. According to the article, from the 1920s to 1970s, the comedic entertainment sector was populated by popular duos: Laurel and Hardy, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, and Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, to name a few. Then, in 1973, their magic disappeared from the TV screens. What happened? Did people’s tastes change en masse? But what about the role of the programmers in all of that? Were TV programmers responsible for changing people’s tastes or was it what audiences wanted and Hollywood delivered? Programmers can indeed get rid of what audiences like because of production costs and they often decide what to greenlight from the creative pools. Both forces shape television: audience tastes change over time and strongly influence what survives, but programmers also steer what is available and how popular it becomes. The relationship is interactive rather than onesided. Out of the 135,600 listed actors in the U.S., it is estimated that just 8,600 of them have steady jobs. And those few who are in demand and work regularly on film and TV sets include a number of performers who look Russian, Chinese, or Iranian. This is because many U.S. film and TV productions seek actors to play villains — including terrorists, smugglers, human traffickers, deviant politicians, and civil servants — from those countries. And this practice isn’t just limited to the U.S. Recently, in China, for example, the number of anti-Japanese productions is increasing, especially wartime flicks. The latest is the big-budget film Evil Unbound, about a unit of the Japanese Imperial Army conducting experiments on living Chinese people. In July, another anti-Japanese film, Dead to Rights, about Japan’s massacre of Chinese people in the city of Nanjing, grossed the equivalent of $420 million.
