Easily confused with its successor, the Nippy, it is a low-slung 53 <img src="images/austin7/shoreham.jpg" align="left" width="170" hspace="6" vspace="3" border="0" alt="Photo of my 65 taken at Shoreham airport" /> 54 two seater sports tourer which was made from June 55 1933 for about a year, during which time about 275 rolled off the production line. The Austin 65 56 was not intended for racing but for those who just wanted the sports two seater 57 look. Costing a mere £148 in 1933, these examples from the heyday of British 58 Motoring can now fetch considerably more!</p> 59 <p>The body is made from aluminium on an ash-wood frame, and the cycle wings 60 are made of steel. In 1933, the 65 could develop 61 23 bhp at 4800 rpm~ this is about twice the power of a standard Austin Seven.</p> 62 <p>In 1934, Austin made a few design modifications and renamed the 63 car, the Nippy. There were now separate side lights and 64 the body was manufactured from steel. Production of the 65 Nippy ceased in 1937.</p> 66 </td> 67 <td width="50%" align="left" valign="top" style="padding: 10px"> 68 <h2>Modifications</h2> 69 <p>Many surviving examples of the 65 have been modified to improve reliability 70 and performance. For example, a pressure-fed oil system such as that designed for the later Nippy and Speedy models or the Bowdenex braking system or modifications to carburation. The two-bearing crank of the original design, with it's splash-fed lubrication 71 system could not withstand the high speed of the engine, and sadly 72 many crankcases met their graves early on.</p> 73 <p> 74 <img src="images/austin7/fifties.jpg" align="right" hspace="6" vspace="3" border="0" alt="Photo of my 65 taken in the 1950s" /> 75 The Phoenix crank is a well known sports replacement. There 76 are many other modifications that can improve performance of the "65" (eg 17" wheels, side lights, 12 volt ignition etc.) but these take the car away from it's original character.<br /> 77 <img src="images/austin7/tourer.jpg" hspace="6" vspace="3" border="0" alt="Photo of my first A7 - a 1933 Tourer" /> 78 </p> 79 </td> 80 </tr> 81 <tr> 82 <td colspan="2" align="left" valign="top" style="padding-top: 40px"> 83 <h2>Specifications</h2> 84 <p>The main characteristics of the Austin "65" that are different to those of the standard 85 A7 are~</p> 86 </td> 87 </tr> 88 <tr> 89 <td width="50%" align="left" valign="top" style="padding: 10px"> 90 <ul class="square"> 91 <li>bowed sports front axle</li> 92 <li>curved front leaf spring</li> 93 <li>close ratio gear box</li> 94 <li>downdraught Zenith 30 VEI carburettor</li> 95 <li>cylinder-head and block cast from Chromidium</li> 96 <li>special inlet manifold</li> 97 </ul> 98 </td> 99 <td width="50%" align="left" valign="top" style="padding: 10px"> 100 <ul class="square"> 101 <li>plugs positioned over the valves</li> 102 <li>extra-large sump with cooling ribs</li> 103 <li>sprung 4-spoke steering wheel made by Bluemel</li> 104 <li>square radiator with chrome stone-guard</li> 105 <li>leather seats</li> 106 </ul> 107 </td> 108 </tr> 109</table> 110<table summary="This table is for layout" class="content" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0"> 111 <tr> 112 <td align="left" valign="top"> 113 <h2 align="left">Dimensions</h2> 114 <p class="noindent"><i>Useful measurements and their metric equivalents:~</i></p> 115 <table summary="This table is for the dimensions" class="green" width="66%" align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"> 116 <tr> 117 <td class="green" style="padding: 3px; text-align: left" width="50%">Wheel Base</td> 118 <td class="green" style="padding: 3px; text-align: left" width="25%">6'9"</td> 119 <td class="green" style="padding: 3px; text-align: left" width="25%">2057mm</td> 120 </tr> 121 <tr> 122 <td class="green" style="padding: 3px; text-align: left">Track</td> 123 <td class="green" style="padding: 3px; text-align: left">3'7"</td> 124 <td class="green" style="padding: 3px; text-align: left">1092mm</td> 125 </tr> 126 <tr> 127 <td class="green" style="padding: 3px; text-align: left">Overall Width</td> 128 <td class="green" style="padding: 3px; text-align: left">4'2"</td> 129 <td class="green" style="padding: 3px; text-align: left">1270mm</td> 130 </tr> 131 <tr> 132 <td class="green" style="padding: 3px; text-align: left">Weight</td> 133 <td class="green" style="padding: 3px; text-align: left">9¾cwt</td> 134 <td class="green" style="padding: 3px; text-align: left">495.3kg</td> 135 </tr> 136 </table> 137 <br /><br /> 138 <hr class="sht" /> 139 <br /><br /> 140 </td> 141 </tr> 142</table>
