D'abord il hésitait : pouvait-il concevoir de rendre publique, même sous le couvert d'une Åuvre d'imagination, la vie privée d'un couple de ses amis, même si tous deux étaient maintenant disparus ?</p> 104 <p class="style18">Et puis, après un travail acharné de plusieurs années, et dès la publication du roman (1856), ce stupide procès... Comme toujours basé sur des « on dit », et sans même prendre la peine de lire complètement les documents, puisque d'autres auparavant avaient pris cette peine... </p> 105 <p class="style18">Ah ! cette fameuse scène du fiacre, en avait-elle fait couler de l'encre, en avait-elle fait s'agiter des langues hypocrites, avides de répandre la médisance et surtout de réduire tout ce qui pourrait être un signe de génie, donc dangereux...</p> 106 <p class="style18">Le journal qui avait publié le roman comme cela se faisait souvent à l'époque, avait péremptoirement supprimé ces lignes (d'un petit écrivain sans renom !), les trouvant sans intérêt. En fait, Flaubert se bornait à énumérer les lieux où le fiacre avait été aperçu, avec toutefois, ce détail en cours de route, d'une main blanche qui, par la fenêtre un instant entrouverte avait éparpillé dans le vent les petits papiers d'un message déchiré...</p> 107 <p class="style18">Tout cela dans le journal n'apparaissait que sous la forme de quelques points de suspension dans une parenthèse, indiquant par là une censure bien évidemment... Que s'était-il donc passé dans cette diligence ?... les esprits s'échauffaient sur cette interrogation... Qu'est-ce donc que la censure avait refusé de laisser voir au public ? Quelles actions, quels gestes, Flaubert avait-il donc décrits et dont l'obscénité aurait choqué les lecteurs ?</p> 108 <p class="style18">Finalement, le procès avait été gagné, mais tout ce bruit autour des faits et des lieux de ce drame n'étaie
