If you recognize these feelings this time of the\nyear; you might be allergic to pollen. About 25 percent of the population in Sweden (1) are allergic to\npollen and if you're one of them, it can definitely lower your otherwise big enthusiasm about spring.\nThe more pollen affects your life, the more important it becomes to know when and where certain\npollen types are spreading. Easily accessible data as well as accurate forecasts can help to prepare with\nmedicine or take other action to avoid allergic reactions.\n\nThe Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM) together with a team of system developers at NBIS\nhas recently released an updated version of the Open Pollen API that serves the public with exactly this\ntype of data. An API is a standardized way to provide data so that other web developers can use it for\nbuilding websites and applications. It's open for everyone to look at and free of charge.\n\nThe Open Pollen API was initially developed by NBIS System developers with a first release in early\n2024. Now, the service is entering its third pollen season. \"Before the API existed, this data was only\naccessible if you directly contacted the Swedish Museum of Natural History, which was cumbersome\nfor everyone involved. Now it's open for everyone. To me, that's a huge improvement\", says Henrike\nWiemker, system developer at NBIS and manager for the project.\n\nSeveral media stations and applications are already using the API, among them NRM themselves on\ntheir website nrm.se. The website got a big relaunch in 2025 and NBIS developers have helped to build\nthe pages that inform about pollen data and pollen forecasts.\nApart from that, NBIS developers have helped NRM to improve their internal software with new\nfunctionality. This has made the everyday work of pollen experts, not only at NRM but all over\nSweden, easier and has reduced manual work.\n\nThe collaboration between NRM and NBIS system developers has been ongoing since 2023. \"It has\nbeen both fun and interesting, and we have achieved a lot during this time\", summarizes Henrike\nWiemker. \"Of course we hope to continue working together in future projects.\"\n\n**For more information:**\n- Check out the Open Pollen API: [api.pollenrapporten.se/docs](https://api.pollenrapporten.se/docs)\n- Learn more about pollen at NRM:\nhttps://www.nrm.se/natur--och-miljoovervakning/pollenovervakning/pollenrapporten\n- Learn more about System Development at NBIS: https://nbis.se/services/software-development\n\n\n(1) https://www.uu.se/nyheter/2022/2022-06-13-klimatforandringarna-ger-mer-pollen-i-luften \n\n\n_Photo by Akin Cakiner on Unsplash_\n ","createdAt":"2026-04-08T07:29:13.642Z"},{"id":22,"slug":"success-story-4","title":"Aspirin halves recurrence in colorectal cancers","summary":"A large clinical trial led by researchers at Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital and SciLifeLab shows that low-dose aspirin can reduce the risk of stage IâIII colorectal cancer relapse by about 50%. The results are published in [The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM)](https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2504650[Link](link))\n\nEach year, about two million people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Roughly a third will relapse and develop metastases, which are difficult to cure. Earlier studies have suggested that low-dose aspirin reduces the risk of colorectal cancer relapsing after surgery. But the results have been inconsistent, with the clearest benef
18it seen in patients whose tumors carry mutations in the PI3K pathway, one of the most common cancer-related genetic changes.\n\n**The ALASCCA trial**\nTo test whether aspirin lowers the risk of PI3K-mutated stage IâIII colorectal cancer relapsing, researchers from KI, Karolinska University Hospital and SciLifeLab launched the ALASCCA trial (Adjuvant Low-Dose Aspirin in Colorectal Cancer). Nearly 3,800 patients were enrolled across 33 hospitals in the Nordic countries. Tumor samples were sent to KI biobank for processing before brought to SciLifeLab for broad panel sequencing, which identified the 37% of patients with PI3K pathway mutations.\n\nâThe ALASCCA project has been a gigantic logistical challenge and without the excellent service of KI biobank and Clinical Genomics it would not have been possible to perform the trial,â says Johan Lindberg, researcher at SciLifeLab and senior author on the publication.\n\nThe system for analysis and reporting was established by Markus Mayrhofer (NBIS) together with other staff in Johanâs team. âThe setup for analyzing the processed sequencing data and reporting to suit the ALASCCA trial that Markus established has worked amazingly well,â Johan continues.\n\n**Marked benefit in PI3K-mutated cancers**\n626 patients with PI3K pathway mutations were randomized to receive either aspirin or placebo. In the aspirin group, the cancer came back in about half as many patients as in the placebo group.\n\nâWe started planning ALASCCA in 2014, In October, 2024, once all randomized patients had more than three years of follow-up, we performed the outcome analysis. It was an incredible moment when we realized that all the hard work had paid off and that we will significantly improve the outcomes of colorectal cancer patients,â says principal investigator Anna Martling, professor of surgery at KI and first author.\n\n**From bench to bedside**\nJohanâs team is now working with Clinical Genomics and the Genomic Medicine Center Karolinska to turn the ALASCCA analysis into a routine diagnostic test at Karolinska University Hospital. \n\nâThe ALASCCA trial is probably one of the best examples of research, driven entirely by an academic research team, going from bench to bedside. Just with a short delay, the result of the trial will benefit patients outside of the trial,â says Valtteri Wirta, Platform Scientific Director at Clinical Genomics.\n\n[DOI: 10.1056/NEJMoa2504650](https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2504650)\n\nCheck the[ NEJM Quick Take clip](https://www.nejm.org/do/10.1056/NEJMdo008153/full/), explaining the clinical trial in just 2 mins","createdAt":"2025-10-10T15:13:46.441Z"},{"id":21,"slug":"success-story-3","title":"Evolution of fungi in a study of fairy rings","summary":"In a recently published study in Science, researchers at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Stockholm University show that fungi, just like humans, separate their germ cells early in their development. As part of a cross-platform Technology Developemnt Project, NBIS has been driving to address these limitations in close collaboration with the Cellular and Molecular Imaging and the Integrated Structural Biology platforms and researcher Björn Wallner (LiU), now resulting in a new tool called _AF_unmasked_, enhancing the accuracy of complex protein structure predictions by merging experimental data with computational models.\n\nClaudio Mirabello, a bioinformatician at SciLifeLabâs NBIS platform, explains, âAlphaFold's predictions are impressive but limited without incorporating experimental data. _AF_unmasked_ bridges this gap, marking the first step toward combining computational models with real biological observations.â _AF_unmasked_ can produce highly reliable structures, even in difficult scenarios like limited evolutionary data or incomplete experimental models, with a DockQ score above 0.8, indicating strong accuracy.\n\nA key feature of _AF_unmasked_ is its ability to fill in gaps in experimental models and suggest multiple conformations, offering insights into protein movement and function. Marta Carroni, platform director at SciLifeLab, notes, \"_AF_unmasked_ is a user-friendly tool that benefits the cryo-EM community by analyzing large, flexible molecular assemblies.\"\n\nThe project began as a knowledge-building effort to understand new prediction tools but quickly evolved beyond the state-of-the-art, demonstrating the collaborative power of SciLifeLabâs experimental and computational expertise. \n\n_AF_unmasked_ will soon be available through SciLifeLab Serve.
