Some older devices (such as earlier iPhones and iPads) aren't able to run the latest browsers that can display the newer WebP image format, and users of these devices may find some game pictures missing, and that some games don't work.
228 229
Friv will run best on newer computers and mobile devices, especially those with widescreen, high resolution displays. Because there is such a variety of computers and devices out there, users may notice significant differences in content and experience on Friv depending on how they access the site. You can at any time access the full games list of all of our games, but please be aware that some may not function properly on your machine.
230 231 232
About Friv
233 234
Since 2006 the Friv website has offered lots of great online games for users to play for free. Friv is different from many other games sites. We only provide family friendly games that are fun and of a high quality. We show VERY few ads. In fact, weâll NEVER interrupt your game with an advert - that would be rude. :) Weâll never nag you to pay for anything. Users who would prefer not to see even a single advert may visit our dedicated schools website at www.friv4school.com.
235 236
Weâre delighted that over the years the Friv brand has become trusted by children, parents, teachers and schools w
236orldwide. Users of any age and in any country can be sure that they will only ever find wholesome content on the site, and thatâs a big reason why weâve grown and become popular. Weâre eternally grateful for the support weâve been given, and we endeavour never to break the trust our valued users have shown in us. In short, we love you all!
 237 238 239
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
240 241
Why has my favourite game disappeared?
242
Sometimes a game will have to be removed because it stops working. This can happen when the technology used to run a game changes, but the game itself stays the same. We try really hard to keep as many of the games working as we can. Other times, to make room for new games, we sometimes have to remove or make less visible older titles if we find that they are less popular. Big sites like YouTube and Netflix do this kind of thing a lot. If a game isn't played often, or for very long each session, or it's otherwise 'downvoted' then, unfortunately, under the Friv rules, it kinda has to go. Remember, it's "Friv : Only the very best free online games!". It is however often possible to seek out these games on other sites, so just search a bit and you'll likely find what you're looking for.
243 244
What age is Friv appropriate for?
245
Friv is a general audience website, which means it's not directed at any particular group or age range. While there are no games that are strongly violent or whose themes are suitable only for adults, some games may not be suitable for younger children, and we suggest that these users are observed by a responsible adult while using the site. We do operate a games website which is directed specifically at minors, and that is www.friv4school.com.
246 247
What happened to the old Friv?
248
Most of the early web games ran really well on a technology called Adobe Flash. There was a problem when smartphones and tablets started to appear from around 2007 onwards, as these devices could not run Flash well, or at all. Sadly, for this and other reasons, Flash was more or less fully disabled worldwide at the end of 2020. As both the original Friv menu and all the games ran on Flash, these no longer ran in most browsers. We worked hard to make a new menu that would work well on all devices, and to source new games made with the up to date HTML5 technology. Happily, lately it has also been possible to emulate some of the older Flash games, and if you look carefully, you will find some on the new Friv menu. You can also have look at our reborn Flash menu at www.frivclassic.com. By no means do all the old games run, but rest assured we're always working on it!
249 250
I've seen a game on another site and also on Friv. What's going on there?
251
We actually make very few games ourselves, and so most of the games you see on Friv are licensed from a range of very talented independent games developers. These guys work really hard on their games, and then they sell a license to various different sites to use them. We try to select only the very best games from the thousands that are made each year. Sometimes, we ask developers to make games just for you â games which are enjoyed exclusively by our players here on Friv. Thatâs why you wonât find games like Crazy Candy Creator, Burger Truck Trump and Smiling Glass Pro Pourer anywhere else.
252 253
How did Friv start?
254
We identified a need! While volunteering in schools, we saw that the kids were having real trouble on the computers finding games to play without being constantly tricked by bogus links to non-existent games, or bothered by endless and sometimes unsafe ads. We knew we could do better. In November 2006 we launched the first version of Friv in beta, and saw it grow really well the following year just by word of mouth - among both kids and adults. The rest, as they say, is history.
255 256
Why are there so many fake Friv sites out there?
257
Like many others in the games industry, we have developed a reputation for providing quality, safe games under a unique name users can trust. As so often happens in commerce, bad actors have exploited this trust and have established fake sites which they monetize via adverts. The fake sites and the ad networks can make large profits from tricking users this way, hence the number of bogus sites.
258 259
Can I make videos of Friv games?
260
Yes! We love to see fans recording their gameplay on Friv. If you upload a video to social media, please make sure that your channel's name and identity is your own, and that you provide a link to the game so that others can easily play it too. For free open-source software to re
260cord your gameplay, we recommend ShareX and for more advanced users, Open Broadcaster Software. We look forward to seeing your work!
261 262 263
Friv Fakes & Forgeries
264 265
We made up the nice and short word âFrivâ over 20 years ago, and we straight away registered the friv.com domain name so that it could become a new place for online games. At that time, nobody else was using the word Friv for games. In the early days of the web, anyone, rich or poor, could choose more or less any name they wanted so long as it was a 'made up' word such as Google, Etsy, Habbo, Reddit, Netflix, Spotify and Youtube. Such words, even in the â.comâ namespace were typically freely available and could be registered, as we did with Friv, for only a few dollars. We were hopeful and excited that Friv would be an easy word for users to remember and type whenever they wanted to play great online games. When we first got some games up and running in late 2006 we were delighted because we could see that users seemed to like what we were doing and the site grew well. We imagined that users would simply type âfriv.comâ into their browser address bar and visit our site that way. Instead, we found that a lot of users went through a gatekeeper / middle man, and typed âfrivâ or âfriv gamesâ into a search engine and visited us from there. This has been a problem (for us, and many other businesses) as the genuine site doesnât always appear at the top of the search results, with many bogus sites appearing within the list. This can be very confusing for users.
266 267
There are many good and trusted brands in the world. Unfortunately, some brands like Nike, Gucci and Chanel are very widely ripped off by those who wish to profit from the reputation they have worked hard to build. Like ourselves, nearly all the big brands have registered their names as trademarks in many different countries around the world - that's why you often see the Registered Trademark ® symbol which shows that a brand is legally recognised as special and unique. However, with so many fakes out there it can be confusing. A customer who buys shoes from a Nike store, or a can of Coke from a supermarket can be pretty sure theyâre getting the real thing. Itâs not so easy on the web.
268 269
Online, the practical legal protection for a mark is limited, and sadly there are a lot of bad actors who have set up counterfeit Friv games websites and apps. These offer poor quality and sometimes unsafe games featuring countless dodgy ads in an attempt to profit from our hard work and investment. These sites achieve success by appearing in search listings and by tricking genuine users into visiting them. The number of trademark-infringing âfrivâ domain names registered now runs into many hundreds or more likely thousands, and in practical terms it is simply impossible to keep track of them all. If other webmasters wish to set up games sites, we support them 100%, but they should come up with their own names, not deliberately confuse gamers by using ours. So, while we and our lawyers work to catch, stop, and prosecute the bad guys (over the years we have closed down or stopped ads from running on dozens of fake sites and apps) you can educate and amuse yourself by looking at some of the more blatant rip-offs in our rogues gallery...
270 271
272

273

274

275

276

277
FRIV FAKES
278
279 280
All the above fake sites were quickly found by typing "Friv" and "Old Friv" into Google Search. Come on Google! Please - let's all work hard to keep users safe with genuine sites.
 281 282 283
Ye Olde Friv
284 285 286 287
Below is a screenshot of our original, some might even say âiconicâ Flash menu. We know that a lot of people remain very nostalgic about the old Friv design (2006 - 2020) and cherish their youthful memories of spending time on the site. Back then, all the games and even the menu system itself were coded in Flash. The powers that be (very regretably in our view) decided to disable Flash at the end of 2020, and so all those wonderful games and even our beloved menu system were effectively lost. The good news is that work is being done to emulate Flash, so that the many little gems we still love can once again run in the browser. We're doing all we can to get as many working as soon as possible. As for our old menu design; even if we did rework it to run in modern browsers there would be problems. These days, having all the game icons on the screen at once would simply make them too small to be selected by fat fingers on small phones and tablets. We hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive us for making such drastic changes, and will in time come round to our new menu system. However, here at Friv we're passionate about history and nostalgia and so a revival of sorts is underway. We maintain a passion for and copyright in our

Beta version, 23rd November 2006.
Only a very few people ever played on this version, and just about nobody will remember it!", 376 "Look very closely, and you will see that we used our stylised logo from day one, but it took us a few months to come up with our famous floating orange 'egg' design!", 377 "A very early version of Friv, circa January 2007. 100 games! By this time you can see that we were experimenting with our signature purple colour...", 378 "Who actually 'discovered' Friv? Beyond friends, family, and some students at Durham University, a young Turkish lady was amongst the first to play on Friv. She helped spread it to at least half a million people. Thank you so much, Ayse / misszorro! We think the thumbnail shown has been updated to a slightly later version of Friv.", 379 "Friv blocked at school? It didn't take long for Friv to be added to blocked lists... April 2007. Boo!", 380 "We all know that Friv has been super popular in schools, but for how long? The very first public Facebook post about Friv from October 2007 shows all the (very old) screens are in use on the site. And two-player classroom favourites Bad Ice Cream and Fireboy and Watergirl wouldn't be released for another two or three years! Thanks for playing and posting, Claire & co!", 381 "There have been thousands of Tweets (or, ahem, Xs) about Friv, but which was the very first to actually list friv.com? We think it was this one from the Netherlands in May 2008. Thank you for your praise Bemba!", 382 "Thousands of Friv players have made videos and uploaded them to YouTube, but which has the honour of being the very first? We think it was this one from a player in the United Kingdom, in September 2008.", 383 "The legendary Flash advergame Power Pamplona, shown on the old Friv gameplay screen. This page was designed before browsers allowed making content full screen, but we tried to fill the screen with as much of the game as we could ...with no ads, of course!", 384 "Friv has never interrupted users with ads while they play, but here you can see that we showed ads while the games loaded. The money from the ads helped us license games and grow the site.", 385 "A decade ago, terrible Microsoft Internet Explorer was the browser of choice!", 386 "Such a cute, nostalgic, bilingual piece of fan art depicting our original menu design. Thank you!", 387 "Can you spot some of the original characters from the old Flash games on Friv? A big thank you to the super-talented IsaacPapu-q7o for these!", 388 "A while back, we went to our local supermarket for some bread and milk, and found these two super-fans in the chocolate isle. ;) We wonder where they are now?!", 389 "Some happy early...", 390 "...Friv gamers...", 391 "...who will surely...", 392 "...all now...", 393 "...be quite...", 394 "...growed up!", 395 "Our beloved band of Friv gamers certainly did like to search on Google.", 396 "Back in 2010, Friv was growing faster than Twitter and Facebook. Crazy times!", 397 "Friv.com once even outranked roblox.com ...how?!", 398 "Last of all a little game! Oscar Wilde once said âImitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatnessâ, but can you spot the real Friv out of all the fake Friv sites registered over the years? We stopped adding to our list once we reached 2000 dodgy sites. To help you here, you only need to look at 700 of the shorter names, and they're in alphabetical order!" 399 ]; 400 401 var slideIndex = 1; 402 403 showDivs(slideIndex); 404 405 function plusDivs(n) { 406 showDivs(slideIndex += n); 407 } 408 409 function showDivs(n) { 410 var i; 411 var x = document.getElementsByClassName("slideshowImg"); 412 if (n > x.length) { 413 slideIndex = 1 414 415 console.log("Friv-Help-Slideshow-Looped"); 416 gtag('event', "Friv-Help-Slideshow-Looped"); 417 418 } 419 if (n < 1) { 420 slideIndex = x.length 421 }; 422 for (i = 0; i < x.length; i++) { 423 x[i].style.display = "none"; 424 } 425 x[slideIndex - 1].style.display = "block"; 426 console.log(slideIndex - 1); 427 if (slideIndex - 1 == 0) { 428 oldFrivHeader.style.letterSpacing = "0.5em"; 429 } else { 430 oldFrivHeader.style.letterSpacing = "normal"; 431 } 432 oldFrivHeader.innerHTML = imageTaglines[slideIndex - 1]; 433 } 434 435 436 437 //check and report on WebP abilities 438 function check_webp_feature(feature) { 439 440 var kTestImages = { 441 lossy: "UklGRiIAAABXRUJQVlA4IBYAAAAwAQCdASoBAAEADsD+JaQAA3AAAAAA", 442 lossless: "UklGRhoAAABXRUJQVlA4TA0AAAAvAAAAEAcQERGIiP4HAA==", 443 alpha: "UklGRkoAAABXRUJQVlA4WAoAAAAQAAAAAAAAAAAAQUxQSAwAAAARBxAR/Q9ERP8DAABWUDggGAAAABQBAJ0BKgEAAQAAAP4AAA3AAP7mtQAAAA==", 444 animation: "UklGRlIAAABXRUJQVlA4WAoAAAASAAAAAAAAAAAAQU5JTQYAAAD/////AABBTk1GJgAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGQAAABWUDhMDQAAAC8AAAAQBxAREYiI/gcA" 445 }; 446 447 var img = new Image(); 448 449 img.onload = function() { 450 console.log("WebP Assessment PASS"); 451 gtag('event', "WebP Assessment PASS"); 452 453 }; 454 455 img.onerror = function() { 456 console.log("WebP Assessment FAIL"); 457 gtag('event', "WebP Assessment FAIL"); 458 }; 459 460 img.src = "data:image/webp;base64," + kTestImages[feature]; 461 462 } 463 464 check_webp_feature("lossy"); 465 466
