Some ice was still hanging around into May 5th/6th but sunshine and strong winds have taken care of that. The water is warming up. Fish are going into their post spawn feeding frenzy. The roar of fishing boats announces the start of every morning on many lakes and fly anglers are thinking about tying on some dry flies as bug hatches become more common. Spring Snow goose hunting is winding down, but not done quite yet. Spring black bear hunting has just begun. Sporting Goods stores are having season opening specials and the fishing lodges are welcoming new groups of guests each week. It's also that time when we start to make a list of our favorite fishing spots and which one we are heading to for the next weekend. Opening day has come and gone so head out to the lake or stream and crate your own great fishing stories for The Campfire.-->
457

468

486
Spring Fishing Season is Here!
487
With the arrival of May, and now the start of June, fishing seasons in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba are opening up. The ice is gone throughout the Southern Zones. Some ice was still hanging around into May 5th/6th but sunshine and strong winds have taken care of that. Sporting Goods stores are having season opening specials and the fishing lodges are gearing up for their first guests of the season. It’s also that time when we start to make a list of our favorite fishing spots and which one we are heading to for opening day. See some great fishing stories in The Campfire.
488
Across the Prairie Provinces, high water conditions exist. Heavy late season snowfalls and late thaws have pushed up water lake levels in most areas. This is giving dock owners, such as myself, a challenge of where to put the dock and boat lift. I have had to position my dock 10′ closer to shore which puts me at near the max height of my dock legs, furthest from shore. The boat lift is also closer, but I managed to position it slight closer to normal. Unfortunately this means likely re-positioning the dock, or dock and lift, when the lake level eventually returns to normal. Will that be in 2 weeks, a month, 2 months. We will have to wait to find out. The floating dock owners are looking pretty wise right now.
489
The fish don’t seem to mind as many species are now in their post-spawn feeding frenzy and settling into their normal early season rout
489ines. Look for the Pike in the shallow bays and the Walleye along drop-offs and other structure. These spots may have changed a bit as water levels of 1-1/2 feet higher than normal may shift them closer to shore than in normal years.
490
For the Bear Hunter
491
Spring Black Bear Hunting is often regarded as the prime season for the quality of the bear fur in the early season. From northern Alberta, through Saskatchewan and Manitoba, the black bears are out from their winter hibernation and the season is on! The Spring fishing season seems like an eternity away, but we avid fly fishermen eagerly await it and tie an inventory of our favorite flies, waiting for May to arrive. Waterfowlers are thinking about the Spring Snow Goose hunt and the Spring Black Bear hunt. Campers are looking ahead to the spring and summer camping seasons, making plans for weekend getaways and week long vacations. Nevertheless, the first trip out was well worth it. The reward was an absolutely outstanding 26" walleye which would weigh out at over 7 pounds. Maybe more, it looked well fed.
524 525 526 527 528
We seem to be past the slushy ice conditions experience in early January as a result of ice up followed quickly by a few good snowfalls then some warm weather again. The overnight lows in the mid -30's seem to have solved that for us!
529 530 531-->
532
539
546
553<!-- 554 555 556
Ice Fishing Season Nearly Over
557 558 559 560 561
Now that we have turned the calendar page from February to March, we in Saskatchewan feel a sense of relief, the end of winter is now in sight. The coldest temperatures are behind us and the warming trend should be come more obvious with each week. For the ice fishers, the shacks in the southern zone need to be removed in a couple weeks. For the snowmobilers, the weekend to get out and play in the snow are numbered. But the days are running a bit longer with sundown now well past 6:30 pm and the sun popping up over the horizon before 8:00 am.
562 563 564 565 566
Recent snowfall has added another foot of snow on top of the ice but a few minutes of shoveling followed by the ice auger means I can drop a line for pike and walleye and enjoy the heat from my propane powered buddy heater. It's just over 2 months now until the start of the new fishing season and open waters, maybe the ice will be off by opening day this year.
567 568 569 570 571
As we enter March, in most parts of the prairies, the fishing season has less than a month left. Look for open water such as rivers where the big Canadas are still roosting. They could stick around and feed on nearby fields well into December. For upland bird hunters, when the snow starts to build up, birds will tend to gather in open areas where the food is easier to reach. While out searching for birds, pay close attention for foot prints in the snow that show large number of birds as grouse or partridge gathering to feed. Make sure to circle back to these spots at prime feeding time. Having a trusty hunting dog that can sniff out the grouse in their under-snow burrows is a huge advantage. Often the goose season opens when we are still a number of weeks away from the arrival of the first geese. The northern migration is largely determined by the availability of open water and food (agricultural fields) suitable for flocks that can number in the 10's of thousands. On March 7th I spotted the first pair of Canada Geese over Saskatoon. With a forecast to snap back to a week of cold weather and snow fall, they may bounce back down southward. The snow geese are typically a month later that the arrival dates of the first Canada Geese. 657 658 659
Spring Black Bear season approaches so hunters and outfitters are starting to gather up tree stands, bait barrels and testing quads in preparation for the bears exit from their hibernation de

With 20 birds a day hunting limits on Snow Geese, including Ross's Geese, the spring snow goose hunt can be a great time to heat up the shotgun barrel and put some geese on the ground. Some of the early season streams are open for trout fishing on the eastern slopes and foothills. Grab that fly rod, waders, and your wind gear. Now is a great time to get your lines tight before the spring run off raises the water level and flow volume. We have been finding walleye in transition zone from 10 feet to 20 feet, often near a weed bed where they are feasting on the Perch. The Walleye are chunky and it only takes a couple to make a good fish fry back at camp or a shore lunch.
