A frontier people group has an even smaller Christian presence—typically fewer than one Christian per 1,000 people.

234
Unreached does not mean that no individual has ever heard about Jesus. It means a distinct people group does not yet have a sufficiently large and resourced local Christian community to spread the Gospel throughout that group without outside assistance.

Mission researchers commonly study language, culture, religion, geography, and social boundaries because those factors shape how the Gospel moves through relationships. Definitions and thresholds vary by research organization, so figures should always be read with their methodology and date.

238
What is a frontier people group?

239
Frontier people groups are a subset of unreached groups with virtually no indigenous Christian presence. Joshua Project describes frontier groups as having 0.1% or fewer Christian adherents and no evidence of a self-sustaining movement to Jesus. These communities face the greatest barriers to Gospel access.

Many frontier groups live in the 10/40 Window, but geography alone does not define them. Diaspora communities can also bring people from least-reached nations into cities where believers can welcome, serve, and build genuine friendships.

Long-term language learning, Bible translation, local leadership, business, media, migration ministry, church planting, and practical service can all play a role.

The Love on Mission dashboard uses a curated mission dataset to make the scale visible.
