107
Focus on Dense Gas Turbulence Modeling

108
109
Dense gases, characterized by large molar masses and heat capacities are used in ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) systems such as the one presented in the picture below. It is used to convert solar energy into electricity more efficiently.
110To improve expanders and turbines efficiencies, manufacturers rely on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques such as Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) or Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Yet, turbulence in dense gas flows remains to be understood and new turbulence closure models need to be developed beyond the perfect gas hypothesis

111
112
Beyond the perfect gas hypothesis

113
114
To analyze and model the peculiar behavior of turbulence in dense gas flows, the ANR project EDGES (project grant #ANR-17-CE06-0014-01) ran from 2018 to 2022.
115The team is now part of the European initiative AUFRANDE in collaboration with QUT (Australia)

116
117
Project EDGES involved Christophe Corre (Full Professor), Aurélien Vadrot (PhD), Paolo Errante (Postdoctoral Research Fellow) and Dominik Schuster (Postdoctoral Research Fellow)

127
A database of more than 10 billion grid points has been gathered using the AVBP solver. Using HPC and Machine learning, the team is currently developing turbulence closure models for RANS and LES.
