How do people feel about and make sense of what took place in their lives during crises? In our work investigating emotional tolls caused by COVID-19 <a href="https://aclanthology.org/2022.emnlp-main.642/">(Zhan et al., EMNLP 2022)</a>, we developed models that could jointly predict fine-grained emotion given social media text, and generate a description of what triggered the emotion. Nevertheless, the same event can often result in different emotional experiences, based on an individual's subjective evaluations or appraisals. 254 <br> 255     In follow-up work <a href="https://aclanthology.org/2023.findings-emnlp.962/">(Zhan et al., EMNLP 2023 Findings)</a>, we found that state-of-the-art LLMs were on par with (and in some cases better than) lay people in uncovering the implicit cognitive information for emotional understanding. Having established such cognitive capabilities, we can subsequently zoom in on the specific negative appraisals which lead to negative emotions, and try to change them by offering targeted reappraisals. Based on the cognitive appraisal theories of emotions, this provides a precise, principled way to help regulate someone's emotions. In our most recent work <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.01288">(Zhan et al., 2024)</a>, we dived into instilling such cognitive reappraisal abilities into LLMs. Our extensive expert evaluations (with practicing psychologists holding advanced degrees) revealed that even LLMs at smaller scales (e.g., 7 billion) can generate cognitive reappraisals that significantly outperform human-written ones if we guide them with psychologically-informed instructions. These findings underscore the potential of AI systems for emotional support and mental well-being. 256</div> 257--> 258 259 260<style> 261 .education-title { 262 overflow: auto; 263 } 264 .education-title:first-of-type { 265 margin-top: 15px; 266 } 267 .education-title:nth-of-type(2) { 268 margin-top: 10px; 269 } 270 .education strong { 271 font-weight: bold; 272 } 273</style> 274</div> 275 276 </div> 277 278 279 <div class="publications"> 280 <h2>Publications</h2> 281 <ol class="bibliography"><li><!-- _layouts/bib.html --> 282 <div class="row"> 283 <!-- Entry bib key --> 284 <div id="liu2024residual" class="col-sm-9"> 285 286 <!-- Title --> 287 <div class="title"><strong>Residual and emergent: Good mother ideals in China and the role of cultural values</strong></div> 288 <!-- Author --> 289 <div class="author"> 290 291 292 <em>Yixuan Liu</em>, and Yi Xu</div> 293 294 <!-- Journal/Book title and date --> 295 <div class="periodical"> 296 <em>Family Relations</em> 2024. 297 </div> 298 299 <!-- Links/Buttons --> 300 <div class="links"> 301 </div> 302 303 304 </div> 305 </div> 306</li> 307<li><!-- _layouts/bib.html --> 308 <div class="row"> 309 <!-- Entry bib key --> 310 <div id="liu2023discipline" class="col-sm-9"> 311 312 <!-- Title --> 313 <div class="title"><strong>Discipline and resistance in the representation of motherhood: Postpartum recovery discussion on Xiaohongshu</strong></div> 314 <!-- Author --> 315 <div class="author"> 316 317 318 <em>Yixuan Liu</em>, and Wei Wang</div> 319 320 <!-- Journal/Book title and date --> 321 <div class="periodical"> 322 <em>Feminist Media Studies</em> 2023. 323 </div> 324 325 <!-- Links/Buttons --> 326 <div class="links"> 327 </div> 328 329 330 </div> 331 </div> 332</li> 333<li><!-- _layouts/bib.html --> 334 <div class="row"> 335 <!-- Entry bib key --> 336 <div id="wang2022platform" class="col-sm-9"> 337 338 <!-- Title --> 339 <div class="title"><strong>Platform ruralism: Digital platforms and the techno-spatial fix</strong></div> 340 <!-- Author --> 341 <div class="author"> 342 343 344 Wei Wang, Huiying Xu, and <em>Yixuan Liu</em></div> 345 346 <!-- Journal/Book title and date --> 347 <div class="periodical"> 348 <em>Geoforum</em> 2022. 349 </div> 350 351 <!-- Links/Buttons --> 352 <div class="links"> 353 </div> 354 355 356 </div> 357 </div> 358</li> 359<li><!-- _layouts/bib.html --> 360 <div class="row"> 361 <!-- Entry bib key --> 362 <div id="xu2022understanding" class="col-sm-9"> 363 364 <!-- Title --> 365 <div class="title"><strong>Understanding virtual gifting in live streaming by the theory of planned behavior</strong></div> 366 <!-- Author --> 367 <div class="author"> 368 369 370 Yi Xu, Yixin Ye, and <em>Yixuan Liu</em></div> 371 372 <!-- Journal/Book title and date --> 373 <div class="periodical"> 374 <em>Human Behavior and Emerging Technologies</em> 2022. 375 </div> 376 377 <!-- Links/Buttons --> 378 <div class="links"> 379 </div> 380 381 382 </div> 383 </div> 384</li> 385<li><!-- _layouts/bib.html --> 386 <div class="row"> 387 <!-- Entry bib key --> 388 <div id="xu2021impact" class="col-sm-9"> 389 390 <!-- Title --> 391 <div class="title"><strong>The impact of trust in technology and trust in leadership on the adoption of new technology from employeeâs perspective</strong></div> 392 <!-- Author --> 393 <div class="author"> 394 395 396 Yi Xu, and <em>Yixuan Liu</em></div> 397 398 <!-- Journal/Book title and date --> 399 <div class="periodical"> 400 <em>Advances in Psychological Science</em> 2021. 401 </div> 402 403 <!-- Links/Buttons --> 404 <div class="links"> 405 </div> 406 407 408 </div> 409 </div> 410</li></ol> 411</div> 412 413 414 415 416 </article> 417 418 419</div> 420 421 </div> 422 423 <!-- Footer --> 424 425 426<footer class="fixed-bottom"> 427 <div class="container mt-0"> 428 ©
