3<script>self.__next_f.push([1,"Growing up in a traditional middle-class family in South Africa, Rees received the usual “stranger danger” warnings, but he was not warned about those close to him, who might betray his trust.\n\nAt 13, he joined an out of town trip with a soccer team. The coach allowed the boys to buy alcohol and they all got drunk. Rees staggered back, barely conscious and a man (was it the coach?) took Rees to his hotel room and sexually abused him. Rees woke up horrified, vaguely remembering what happened and never spoke about it. But the experience drove him into isolation.\n\nIn high school, Rees played rugby. His coach tutored him in Afrikaans language lessons and turned them into grooming sessions and then the fondling began. Like all survivors, Rees was rocked by self-blame: “What am I doing to invite this?”  He avoided the coach, who retaliated by benching him.\n\nAfter graduating, Rees was conscripted into the South African Air Force. He opposed the government’s Apartheid policies, but that did not exempt him from service. It did put him in danger.\n\nHis opinions were known among the pro-apartheid soldiers and Rees paid a terrible price. He was gang-raped by three special forces soldiers. Afterwards, Rees sat in the shower, bleeding, in the loneliest abyss of his life, contemplating suicide.\n\nIt was the image of his girlfriend, now his wife, that stayed his hand, and that kept him going. He didn’t use alcohol or drugs to suppress his pain. He used work. He kept busy, became successful, starting businesses, working seven days a week, raising his children.\n\nAt 39 he began wondering if his past traumas were affecting his parenting. So, he sought help from a psychologist, who, blessedly, was smart and wonderful.\n\nCommitted to healing and to fellow survivors, Rees is the founder of South African Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse. SAMSOSA provides services for survivors and works to raise awareness about the reality of male sexual victimization."])</script>

3<script>self.__next_f.push([1,"It was an acting mentor who betrayed and profoundly harmed Tony, but it was acting itself that saved him. What at first seems paradoxical is not. Tony Edwards loves acting, deeply. He loves the honesty, the deep connection that can be attained between actors, the trust that is necessary to attain it. He knew this about acting even as a child. When the mentor betrayed Tony’s trust, and preyed on him and other boys whom he had groomed, Tony was pulled into the predator’s orbit of fear and conditional love. But what he experienced in acting enabled Tony to protect that part of himself that is the human source of trust, of connection, and of love.\n\nLike so many survivors of sexual abuse, Tony cordoned off the traumatic experiences and focused his heart and soul on acting. He forged a successful career in television and film. He married and raised his children. He put aside his acting career for a decade to be a full-time father.\n\nBut there are internal magnetic forces that resist compartmentalization, that demand integration, that strive for wholeness. In 2013, allegations surfaced in the media about Tony’s former mentor, and suddenly Tony’s inner landscape shifted. With the help of therapy and connection with other survivors, Tony confronted the legacies of what he had suffered in childhood: the betrayal of love and trust that sent filaments across the decades of his life.\n\nIn November, 2017, Tony published an article disclosing what he had endured. Soon, other men came forward with their own testaments to the predations of their common mentor. Healing is not simply restoration. It is reconstruction, reconstitution. When the harm of betrayal is identified, when its filaments are recognized, trust is once again possible. And out of that healing is born a commitment to work on behalf of other survivors, the one in six men who have been sexually victimized. “Let’s change that statistic.”"])</script>

His older brother Frankie had killed himself.\n\nFlashbulb memories of a childhood incident with his brother in an abandoned chicken coop had swirled in Eric for many years. But now those memories collided with the reality of Frankie’s death and they exploded. “I cried out for my wife to come to me. And she did. And that was the beginning of my recovery.”\n\nFrankie did not abuse Eric, but nor did he protect him, either from the older boys in the chicken coop, or from family members who also sexually abused him.\n\nFrom that explosive confluence of abuse and suicide, Eric launched his recovery. “Breaking that silence was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” He had always been open to therapy, and now he found a support group and a therapist who specialized in working with male survivors.\n\nEric is a yoga instructor, and owner of a yoga studio. When a sexual assault scandal erupted in the national yoga community, Eric made the moral choice to align himself with the women who had come forward with accusations, and he publicly disclosed his own history of childhood sexual abuse. Eric’s honesty and openness has infused his yoga practice and teaching, and the response from his clients has been overwhelmingly positive. Many of them quietly thanked him. “I know that there are a lot of survivors in that room with me.”\n\nEric also knows that “these words need to be spoken, and not just for me. But to survive a childhood in which he was repeatedly sexually abused he also needed his hands for the survival of his heart and soul. So those capable hands turned to the creation of sculpture. Dugal harvests cast off objects and fashions them into works of art that express the torment, the struggle and the triumph of surviving childhood trauma.\n\nFor much of his life, Dugal felt a complete sense of emptiness and inability to vocalise what was going on. He was targeted repeatedly, abused by both male and female perpetrators. Like many survivors, he did his best to suppress these experiences. He lived recklessly, he drank too much, he continued to be preyed on. He felt unworthy of protecting himself.\n\nHe was well into adulthood when his recklessness and inability to protect himself created a crisis that sent Dugal “to the bottom.” For three months he was bed-ridden, unable to work, barely able to function. Thankfully, he had his wife, Megan. She supported him through the crisis. “I’d be dead without her.”\n\nAnd Dugal also had his hands. One of his first pieces was a sculpture of a crucifix, lacerated with welts, punctured by nails, pulled backward by bindings. In the creation of this sculpture Dugal experienced the connection between Christ’s suffering and his own, understood the connection that interlaces all suffering.\n\nHealing has enabled Dugal to reconnect with himself, to nurture his connection with Megan, and ultimately to reconnect with his father. Two years before his father died, Dugal told him about the sexual abuse that had scarred him. His father, 84 years old, then disclosed to Dugal that he had also been sexually abused as a child. He had never told anyone.\n\nToday, Dugal leads a chapter of the Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse Trust, helping other survivors to find their path toward healing."])</script>

Instead of responding defensively, Walter took his girlfriend’s accusation to heart. He called a friend whom he knew was seeing a therapist and he asked for the therapist’s number. So began Walter’s journey. He and his therapist had a lot of work to do. Walter was sexually abused for more than a decade by a close friend of his family. The school structure gradually tamed Lee, but he grew up without his parents, a chasm that remains to this day.\n\nThe mystery of Lee’s childhood – the root of his wild behavior – was finally revealed when he was 17. He was working in a library. Suddenly, with no warning, the smell of ink and the perfume of a passing woman combined to trigger an earthquake of repressed memories, of being sexually abused, at the age of six, by a female babysitter. The earthquake left Lee reeling, but the child of two British soldiers clamped down on his emotions and followed his parents’ footsteps into the British Army.\n\nTwelve years later, after service in the Gulf War and in Bosnia, Lee began a career in law enforcement. First in his native England, and later in his adopted country, Canada, Lee settled into his chosen profession. He slowly realized that his childhood trauma enabled him to connect with victims of sexual violence. Children trusted him. They were able to disclose to him what they had suffered. He was soon working with a team of investigators, solving difficult cases, producing the evidence needed to yield convictions. It is work that is deeply meaningful to Lee, but it has its costs. Empathizing with victims, genuinely feeling their pain and grief, means feeling their pain and grief.\n\nMarried and raising two sons, Lee is dedicated to ensuring that their childhoods are different from his own; unscarred by trauma, and nestled in a family imbued with their parents’ love."])</script>

3<script>self.__next_f.push([1,"\"Marty Moran is a writer, an actor, a singer, a playwright, and a man whose life has in part been shaped by the sexual abuse perpetrated against him by a counselor at a Catholic boys’ camp. To witness Marty’s performances of his plays, The Tricky Part and All the Rage, is to be, in turn, seared, humored, riveted and healed.\n\nThe journey from the scarred boyhood to the successful playwright has been neither linear nor easy. The son of a newspaper man, Marty may have inherited his Irish ancestors’ love of language. Writing has always been for Marty a place and a way; a place to be with himself, to take soundings within himself, and a way to understand and heal what he uncovers in those soundings.\n\nOne day, as Marty was “scribbling” in his journal, a sentence came out: “What happened when you were twelve. Tell the truth.” And so were born the memoirs and the plays that Marty has performed across the U.S. and the globe.\n\nLike many survivors, Marty’s journey has been profoundly aided by “angels.” In high school, he auditioned for a musical (“Somehow, the gay guy in me wanted to sing!”) and his performance was witnessed by Winnie Hartman, a woman who came backstage and told him that he needed to take singing lessons with her. “That woman took me as a sixteen year-old and looked me in the eye and coaxed out my voice.” Winnie nurtured his emerging talent. “It was the curve that turned me. It became my life. To become a singer and an actor.”\n\nTo the miracle of Winnie you can add the miracle of Henry. They met when Marty was twenty-four. Now, more than three decades later, they have navigated and forged a life together.\""])</script>

3<script>self.__next_f.push([1,"A half century after Colin endured six years of sexual abuse at the hands of his brother, he became his brother’s end of life caretaker. Colin took care of Graeme because he was able to, because he had confronted his brother and was then able to forgive him, because Colin had spent fifteen years confronting the legacies of what Graeme had done to him.\n\nThe legacies were many. He had protected himself during the abuse by learning to dissociate – separating from consciousness the horror of what he was experiencing. Dissociation became a habit, and a hindrance. The protection it provided was so complete that for more than three decades Colin had no access to the memories of the abuse.\n\nFor years he isolated himself and did whatever he could to make himself invisible. And then, at the age of 17, Colin made a conscious decision to abandon isolation. He went to university, involved himself socially, and became enraptured with mountaineering. On the high altitude ice fields, one mistake away from a certain death, Colin discovered the sheer joy of adrenaline and – paradoxically – release from fear. When his axe buried itself into the ice, fear vanished.\n\nColin followed a serendipitous path into adulthood. He worked with people with disabilities, helping them to live independently. He worked with prisoners. He trained in psychodrama. And it was psychodrama that finally cracked the wall of dissociation that blocked him from the memories of what his brother had done to him. At the age of 45, those memories burst through.\n\nIt is perhaps not a surprise that today Colin works in restorative justice. He is steeped in the complexities of the relationship between the person who has been harmed and the perpetrator, helping them to find a form of justice that also provides a pathway to healing. Like the pathway that enabled Colin to take care of his dying brother."])</script>

3<script>self.__next_f.push([1,"José, the youngest of ten children, came to the U.S. at age five with his family from Mexico. Though his parents were dedicated and dutiful, they were also traumatized individuals hindered by the stressors of severe poverty. José’s home life then was marred by emotional and physical neglect. At school, he also suffered years of relentless bullying.\n\nTherefore, when his older cousin coaxed him one day into a back room of his house and molested him, it had a profound effect. Nine years old, vulnerable, and threatened into complying with his cousin’s demands, José left that room burdened by long-lasting shame and guilt. Unable to find comfort in the adults around him, he found refuge in the school classroom and the gold-star stickers he earned for excelling, all while suppressing an inner voice that called him unworthy of love.\n\nIn his early twenties, struggling with accepting himself as gay and haunted by the past, José found his way to psychotherapy. Gradually, after years, he came to understand the significance and ramifications of his formative childhood experiences, including those terrible moments in the backroom. What began as journal writing, assigned as homework by his first therapist, evolved into a rekindled interest in literature and storytelling. After many years of struggling to find his place in the world, José found his calling as a writer and professor. Born into abject poverty and wounded by sexual molestation and neglect, he now holds a Ph.D. in English, he teaches creative writing, and he is a published author of both prose and poetry.\n\nHis books, including his memoir House Built on Ashes, have allowed him to transform trauma and experience into something of beauty that he relishes sharing with readers.\n\nThough sometimes the wounds of the past still need tending to, he remains hopeful and committed to this life-long project of healing and writing.\n\n“I write not just for me but for those who wanted to and couldn’t. My stories are theirs, too.”\n\nReview José's poem published in The New Yorker inspired by lived experience, \"Men's Sexual-Trauma Support Group.\""])</script>
