Every detector is off until you turn it on, and Nearscope works entirely on your device.

How to Use

Getting Started

During onboarding, choose which sources you want available — Bluetooth, Beacons, Local network, Precision finding, Camera objects, and Sound recognition. You can change these anytime from the Detectors tab. Nearscope only asks iOS for a permission the moment you turn a source on.

Reading the Radar

The Radar tab plots nearby signals by estimated proximity. Tap any signal to see its details, mark it as known, give it a label, or ignore it going forward. Bluetooth signal strength is an estimate, not an exact distance or a security assessment.

Known Beacons

Add an iBeacon's UUID (and optional major/minor) from Settings › Known beacons to range it by name. Only add beacons you own or are authorized to use.

Saved Places

Save a place to remember the signals present when you saved it. Nearscope compares your current surroundings against that baseline and gently flags anything new or missing — useful for noticing when your usual environment has changed.

Precision Finding

Two people who both have Nearscope can exchange a pairing token as a file (for example, over AirDrop) to get Ultra Wideband distance and direction between their devices. This requires both people to keep Nearscope open and cannot find AirTags or arbitrary UWB devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Nearscope detect AirTags or other trackers?

No. Nearscope shows Bluetooth Low Energy advertisements, iBeacons you've added, and local network services. It is not a tracker-detection tool and makes no claims about identifying tracking devices. For that, use Apple's built-in "Item Safety Alerts" on iPhone.

Why do unnamed devices show up?

Many Bluetooth accessories don't broadcast a name in every advertisement. Nearscope labels these "Unnamed BLE signal" or "Unknown BLE device" until it sees a real name, and you can always give a device your own label.

Does Nearscope work in the background?

Scanning runs while Nearscope is open. iOS controls background radio access, and Nearscope never promises continuous background discovery.

Does Nearscope require an account?

No. Nearscope has no account system and no sign-in of any kind.

Privacy

Your privacy matters.
