Grief is the reflection of a connection that has been lost. It is what we feel inside when someone we love has died or some situation has ended. In many ways grief is about adjusting to change. Usually when it comes to grief, it’s a change we did not want or invite.</p> 852<p align=" justify="">Grief is what we feel inside. Mourning is what we experience and show to others on the outside. So I can never see your grief or judge your grief by whether or not you’re crying or angry or upset. Only you will ever know your grief.</p> 853<p align="justify>So why grieve? C.S. Lewis wrote in 1898, âExperience is a brutal teacher, but you learn from it, by God you learn. Pain is part of the happiness, that’s the deal.â</p> 854<p align=" justify="">The attachment we feel for each other, to those we love, to the house we live, to the job we engage in – will be reflected by the pain we feel later when we no longer have the job, our loved one or our house. We grieve for those we love, we even grieve for those we hate, but we don’t grieve for those we are indifferent to.</p> 855<p>So in a very real way grief is evidence of your love. Each tear is proof that you cared. You loved.</p> 856<p>In 1917 Freud wrote, âgrieving is a natural process that should not be tampered with.â Is that still true today?</p> 857<p>If that’s true, what’s with all the books? The bereavement groups and seminars? Well let’s compare 1917 to today.</p> 858<p align="justify>In 1917 your family, all of them lived in the same house, if not the same house you lived on the same block or just around the corner. Also when someone became ill they stayed at home and eventually died. They just melted into their bed.</p> 859<p align=" justify="">Now, the reality is, your love ones live states or countries away. There is no longer natural infrastru
859cture around us. Our family and extended family no longer living in the same house.</p> 860<p align="justify>Letâs also look at how we die today vs the 1900âs. Most people dying in the hospital are often separated from their love ones. We are also invited to make complex medical decisions of what’s best for our love ones. So today we often are left with questions;</p> 861<p>⢠Did we do too much in the hospital for a loved one? Did we do too little?<br /> 862⢠Should they have tried one more treatment?<br /> 863⢠Should we have resuscitated them one more time?<br /> 864⢠Would another procedure been good or cruel?</p> 865<p>We are left with this medical residue that can sometimes haunt us.</p> 866<p align=" justify="">Elisabeth Kubler Ross first identified the five stages in her groundbreaking book, On Death and Dying in 1969. The stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.</p> 867<p align="justify>In 2004 one month before her death Elisabeth and David Kessler completed On Grief and Grieving: Finding the meaning of grief through the five stages of loss. This was the first time Kübler Ross had adapted the stages along with Kessler in book form from death and dying to grief and loss.</p> 868<p align=" justify="">David Kessler also discussed the possibility of a sixth stage, the stage of âmeaning.â These stages occur naturally in our lives every day around many changes.</p> 869<p align="justify>They also occur in public grieving. We continue to engage in public grieving in new and different ways. Public grieving is real. What about what we see on TV or read on the Internet or Facebook or twitter? The reality is just because you didn’t personally know someone doesn’t mean you didn’t have some attachment to them.</p> 870<p align=" justify="">For some people, in a very real way, they did grieve for say John Kennedy, Princess Diana, or Steve Jobs. They may have never met them and yet so many public figures are a part of our life. In a very new way the Internet has become our new Town square. A hundred years ago when a loss occurred, we would hear about it in the Town square. We would talk with one another there. We would express publicly our sadness and shock. Today, Facebook, Twitter and other social media are our new Town square.</p> 871<p align="justify>If for some reason you or someone you love is not feeling grief in the way you think they or you would. Just remember we can never truly know anyone elseâs grief, and if they’re really running from the pain of loss or the grief, just know that grief is always safely held for us until we’re ready to psychologically and emotionally tackle it.</p> 872<p align=" justify="">Evolutionary biologist sometimes think grief is passed from one generation to another, not just because it provides benefit in itself, but rather it’s a side effect of having attachments and relationships. I believe it is more than that. We often think we want to escape grief, but really what we want to escape is the pain of loss.</p> 873<p>Grief is a miraculous gift which is given to us to help heal that pain.
