Yet we human beings are animals that tell ourselves stories, and that can be a good thing as well. Especially if we allow a story to speak to us on the level of image and feeling in ways that words alone cannot.</span></span></p> 383<p><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family: times new roman;"><font class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span">From the earliest age he can remember (his autobiography is called <em><strong>Elephant's Memory</strong></em> which tells you something) Bruce has been encouraged to pursue creative endeavors. His parents maintained an "art cupboard" of supplies for their kids since Bruce was 4, and in 2nd and 3rd grade he was blessed to be mentored by a genuinely magickal teacher named Miss Amala Rose Wood. She opened the doors of perception for Bruce and many other children who passed through her classroom at Chiengmai Children's Center in northern Thailand.</span></font></span></span></p> 384<p><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family: times new roman;">Miss Wood is the person who read aloud to Bruce such influential works as <strong><em>The Little White Horse</em></strong> by Elizabeth Goudge and the entire series of <strong><em>The Narnia Chronicles</em></strong> by C.S. Lewis. What Bruce learned from Miss Wood was more than specific information. He learned the joy and excitement of learning as a way of living, creativity as a way of life. Later while living in Bangkok, at the age of 11 he finished writing his first novel manuscript.
