74inside computational models. The guiding idea, which I call computational neurophenomenology, is to treat a model not as a black box that merely classifies inputs, but as an artificial perceptual system whose architecture, priors, and objective functions are dials we can turn. By turning those dials, my collaborators and I try to simulate the specific phenomenological character of an experience, and then check the result against people's first-person reports. The aim is an "operational grammar" that connects subjective experience to manipulable variables, rather than settling for correlations between experience and brain activity.`, 75 `Much of this work uses altered states of perception as a testbed, because they reveal what the everyday brain quietly holds fixed. Using deep neural networks â and the DeepDream technique in immersive VR â we have simulated psychedelic-like visual hallucinations without any drug, isolating the perceptual change from a substance's other bodily effects. Extending this, we coupled image classifiers with generative networks and tuned three dimensions â how realistic, how spontaneous, and how complex a hallucination is â to reproduce the strikingly different visual worlds of Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia, Charles Bonnet syndrome, and psychedelics, then confirmed with patients and psychedelic users that the synthetic versions matched their own experience.`, 76 `The same logic reaches inward as well as outward. Working with predictive-processing and free-energy models, we have built agents whose attention self-organizes between a "doing" mode engaged with the outside world and a "being" mode resting on present, bodily (interoceptive) sensation â a step toward modelling mindfulness, mind-wandering, and even contentless "pure awareness." Across these projects I am increasingly convinced that there is no single master principle behind all of experience; rather, different qualities of experience correspond to different choices of architecture and objective function. My current work formalizes this as a framework in which the roles a network can play â extracting features, generating inner imagery, and judging what is real â become explicit, testable descriptors of how experience is built and how it can change.` 77 ], 78 ja: [ 79 `æèçµé¨ã®ãæããããââä¸çãã©ãè¦ããããèªåãåå¨ãã¦ããã¨ã¯ã©ããªæããããã®ãã¨ãã©ãã»ã©é®®æã§ãæ¬ç©ãã«æãããããââããè¨ç®ã¢ãã«ã®å å´ã§åç¾ãããã¨ã«åãçµãã§ãã¾ãããã®ä¸å¿ã«ããã®ããè¨ç®è«çç¥çµç¾è±¡å¦ï¼computational neurophenomenologyï¼ãã¨ããèãæ¹ã§ããã¢ãã«ããå ¥åããã åé¡ããããã©ãã¯ããã¯ã¹ãã¨ãã¦ã§ã¯ãªããã²ã¨ã¤ã®äººå·¥çãªç¥è¦ã·ã¹ãã ã¨ãã¦ã¨ããããã®æ§é ã»äºåæå¾ ï¼priorï¼ã»ç®ç颿°ããæä½ã§ãããã¤ã¾ã¿ãã¨ãã¦æ±ãã¾ãããã®ã¤ã¾ã¿ãåããã¨ã§ãããçµé¨ããã¤åºæã®ç¾è±¡å¦çãªè³ªãã·ãã¥ã¬ã¼ããããã®çµæã人ã ã®ä¸äººç§°ã®èªãã¨ç §ããåããã¦ããã¾ããç®æãã¦ããã®ã¯ãçµé¨ã¨è³æ´»åã®ç¸é¢ã§æºè¶³ããã®ã§ã¯ãªãã主観çãªçµé¨ãæä½å¯è½ãªå¤æ°ã¸ã¨çµã³ã¤ãããæä½çãªææ³ããè¦ãã ããã¨ã§ãã`, 80 `ãã®ç 究ã®å¤ãã¯ãç¥è¦ã®å¤å®¹ç¶æ ï¼altered statesï¼ãå®é¨ã®è¶³å ´ã«ãã¦ãã¾ãããµã ãã®è³ãéãã«ãåºå®ããã¦ãããã®ããããã§ãã£ããè¦ãã¦ããããã§ãã深層ãã¥ã¼ã©ã«ãããã¯ã¼ã¯ãããã¦æ²¡å ¥åVRä¸ã®DeepDreamã使ããè¬ç©ããã£ããç¨ããã«ãµã¤ã±ããªãã¯ã«ä¼¼ãè¦è¦çå¹»è¦ãã·ãã¥ã¬ã¼ãããç©è³ªããããã身ä½çãªå¯ä½ç¨ãããç¥è¦ã®å¤åãã ããåãåºãã¦ãã¾ãããããã«ç»ååé¡ãããã¯ã¼ã¯ã¨çæãããã¯ã¼ã¯ãçµåããå¹»è¦ã®ããªã¢ã«ãã»èªçºæ§ã»è¤éããã¨ããä¸ã¤ã®æ¬¡å ã調æ´ãããã¨ã§ããã¼ãã³ã½ã³ç ãã¬ãã¼å°ä½åèªç¥çãã·ã£ã«ã«ã»ããçå群ããµã¤ã±ããªãã¯ã¨ãããã¾ã£ããç°ãªãè¦è¦ä¸çãåç¾ããæ£è ãããçµé¨è ãæ¬äººã«ãèªåã®çµé¨ã¨åè´ãããã¨ç¢ºããã¦ãããã¾ããã`, 81 `åãè«çã¯ãå¤ã®ä¸çã ãã§ãªãå å´ã«ãåããã¾ããäºæ¸¬å¦çã¨èªç±ã¨ãã«ã®ã¼åçã«ãã¨ã¥ãã¢ãã«ãç¨ãã¦ãå¤çã«é¢ãããdoingï¼ããï¼ãã¢ã¼ãã¨ããã¾ã»ããã®èº«ä½å é¨ã®æè¦ï¼å å容æè¦ï¼ã«ã¨ã©ã¾ããbeingï¼ããï¼ãã¢ã¼ãã®ããã ã§æ³¨æããã®ãã¨åãæ¿ããã¨ã¼ã¸ã§ã³ããä½ãããã¤ã³ããã«ãã¹ããã¤ã³ãã¯ã³ããªã³ã°ãããã«ã¯å 容ããããªããç´ç²ãªæ°ã¥ãï¼pure awarenessï¼ãã®ã¢ãã«åã¸ã¨è¿ã¥ãã¦ãã¾ãããããããä¸é£ã®è©¦ã¿ãéãã¦ããã¹ã¦ã®çµé¨ã®èå¾ã«ãã ã²ã¨ã¤ã®åçãããã®ã§ã¯ãªããçµé¨ã®è³ªã®ã¡ããã¯ãæ§é ã¨ç®ç颿°ã®é¸ã³æ¹ã®ã¡ããã«å¯¾å¿ãã¦ãããã¨ãã確信ãå¼·ãã¦ãã¾ãããã¾åãçµãã§ããã®ã¯ããããã¯ã¼ã¯ãæ ãããå½¹å²ââç¹å¾´ãæ½åºãããå çãªã¤ã¡ã¼ã¸ãçæãããä½ããæ¬ç©ããã夿ããââãæ示çã«åãåºããçµé¨ãã©ãæ§æãããã©ãå¤ããããããè¨è¿°ã»æ¤è¨¼ã§ããæ çµã¿ã¨ãã¦å®å¼åãããã¨ã§ã

This feeling â often called the sense of "presence" â is so constant that we rarely notice it, yet it can break down in conditions such as depersonalization and derealization, where people report that themselves and their surroundings seem unreal, distant, or "as if" behind glass. I treat presence not as something the brain passively receives, but as something it actively constructs and continually maintains â a feature of consciousness that can be measured, perturbed, and explained.`, 104 `To get at the mechanisms, I combine theory with immersive technology. On the theoretical side, my colleagues and I have proposed that presence arises from the brain's predictive modeling of the body from the inside â when the brain successfully predicts the bodily and emotional signals that flow from its own engagement with the world, we feel grounded in a reality that is unmistakably ours. On the experimental side, I build systems that let us manipulate that sense directly. With "substitutional reality," for example, we seamlessly swap a person's live surroundings for pre-recorded scenes without their noticing, so we can study how conviction about what is real is sustained â or quietly fabricated. More broadly, I use virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR/XR) to vary the sensory and bodily ingredients of an experience and watch how the feeling of "really being here" shifts in response. And to gauge the felt reality of objects themselves without relying on subjective report, I turn to implicit paradigms â using breaking continuous flash suppression in immer
104sive VR to ask how an object's perceived reality shapes the way it breaks into conscious awareness.`, 105 `What ties these threads together is the idea that our experience of reality is an active construction of the brain, not a transparent window onto the world. Understanding how that construction comes about matters not only for the science of consciousness, but for designing better immersive technologies and for making sense of clinical conditions in which the feeling of reality comes apart.` 106 ], 107 ja: [ 108 `ããã¾ã§ã®ç 究ã®å¤ãã¯ãä¸è¦ç´ æ´ãªåãããåºçºãã¾ãââãªãä¸çã¯ãããã¦ãã®ä¸ã«ããèªåèªèº«ã¯ãããã»ã©ãç¾å®ãã«æããããã®ãããã®æè¦ã¯ãå®å¨æï¼presenceï¼ãã¨ãå¼ã°ãããã¾ãã«å½ããåããã¦æ®æ®µã¯æèãããã¾ãããããã©ããé¢äººçã»ç¾å®æåªå¤±ã¨ãã£ãç¶æ ã§ã¯ãã®æè¦ãæºãããèªåãå¨å²ãã©ããåããããé ãããã¬ã©ã¹è¶ããã®ããã«æãããã¦ãã¾ãããã®å®å¨æããè³ãåã身ã§åãåããã®ã¨ãã¦ã§ã¯ãªããè³ãè½åçã«çµã¿ç«ã¦ããããä¿ã¡ç¶ãã¦ãããã®ââ測ããã¨ããæºãã¶ããã¨ããä»çµã¿ã説æãããã¨ãã§ãããæèã®ä¸ã¤ã®æ§è³ªââã¨ãã¦æãã¦ãã¾ãã`, 109 `ãã®ã¡ã«ããºã ã«è¿«ãããã«ãçè«ã¨æ²¡å ¥åæè¡ãçµã¿åããã¦ãã¾ããçè«ã®é¢ã§ã¯ãå®å¨æã¯è³ã身ä½ããå å´ãããäºæ¸¬ãããã¨ããçã¾ãããã¨èãã¦ãã¾ãããä¸çã¨ã®ããã¨ãã®ä¸ã§çãã身ä½ãæ åã®ä¿¡å·ãè³ããã¾ãäºæ¸¬ã§ãã¦ããã¨ããç´ãããªãèªåã®ãã®ã¨æããããç¾å®ã«ããã£ããã¨è¶³ãã¤ãã¦ããããã®ã§ããå®é¨ã®é¢ã§ã¯ããã®æè¦ãç´æ¥ããããä»çµã¿ãä½ã£ã¦ãã¾ãããã¨ãã°ã代æ¿ç¾å®ï¼Substitutional Realityï¼ãã§ã¯ãæ¬äººã«æ°ã¥ãããªãã¾ã¾ããã¾è¦ã¦ããç¾å®ã®é¢¨æ¯ããããããé²ç»ããå ´é¢ã¸ã¨ãªãããã«å·®ãæ¿ãã¦ãã¾ãããããããã¨ã§ããä½ãæ¬ç©ããã¨ãã確信ãã©ã®ããã«ä¿ããââãããã¯éãã«ä½ãæ¿ãããã¦ãã¾ãã®ãââã調ã¹ããã¾ããããã«åºãã¯ãVRã»ARã»XRã使ã£ã¦çµé¨ãæ§æããæè¦çã»èº«ä½çãªè¦ç´ ãå¤åãããããã¾ç¢ºãã«ããã«ãããã¨ããæè¦ãããã«å¿ãã¦ã©ãæºãåãã®ãã観å¯ãã¦ãã¾ããããã«ãããã«ãããç©ä½ãããã¤å®å¨æãã®ãã®ãã主観çãªå ±åã«é ¼ããã«ï¼éæ示çã«ï¼æ¸¬ããã¨ããã¦ãã¾ããæ²¡å ¥åVRã®ãªãã§é£ç¶ãã©ãã·ã¥æå¶ï¼breaking CFSï¼ãç¨ãããã®ç©ä½ãã©ãã ãæèã«ã®ã¼ããããããéãã¦å®å¨æãæãããã¨ããå¿çå®é¨ã§ãã`, 110 `ãããã®ç 究ã«å ±éãã¦ããã®ã¯ãç§ãã¡ãæãã¦ããç¾å®ã¨ã¯ãä¸çãããã®ã¾ã¾ã«æ ãéæãªçªã§ã¯ãªããè³ã«ããè½åçãªãåæ§æããªã®ã ãã¨ããèãæ¹ã§ãããã®åæ§æãã©ã®ããã«æãç«ã£ã¦ããã®ãã解ãæãããã¨ã¯ãæèã

Across my work I have come to see selfhood not as something given, but as something the brain actively constructs by weaving together bodily signals â the sensorimotor and multisensory information coming from the outside (what we see, touch, and do) and the interoceptive signals arising from within (the heartbeat, the breath, the quiet hum of the viscera). Strip the body away and the self has nothing to stand on.`, 133 `To study this, I treat the bodily self as something I can gently bend and measure. Using illusions such as the rubber hand illusion â and immersive versions built in virtual and augmented reality â I show that the feeling of owning a body can be enhanced or weakened simply by changing how these signals line up in time. When a virtual hand pulses in sync with your own heartbeat, ownership grows; how strongly depends on how well you sense your own internal state. We can even reach the self through the body's wiring directly: stimulating the vagus nerve, a main channel carrying signals from the organs to the brain, makes people more attuned to their real body and less captured by such illusions. The same logic extends to the sense of agency â the feeling of authoring our actions â which turns out to rest on the brain's integration of sensory cause and effect rather than on intention alone.`, 134 `Tying these strands together is a single idea: predictive coding. I think of the experience of being a self as the brain's best ongoing guess about the most likely cause of all these inner and outer signals taken together. This view matters because it reframes selfhood as a process we can probe, perturb, and ultimately understand â with implications for the many conditions, from depersonalization to chronic anxiety, in which the felt connection between body and self comes apart.` 135 ], 136 ja: [ 137 `ãèªå·±ãããããæãæ·±ãåãã¯ãåæã«ã¨ã¦ã身ä½çãªåãã§ãããã¾ãããªãããã®èº«ä½ããèªåã®ãã®ãã¨æããè¡çºãã¦ããã®ã¯ãã»ããªãã¬èªåã ãã¨æããããã®ã§ãããããç 究ãéãããã¡ã«ãã©ãçããã®ã¯ãèªå·±ã¨ã¯åãããä¸ãããã¦ãããã®ã§ã¯ãªããè³ã身ä½ããã®ä¿¡å·ãç·¨ã¿ä¸ãããã¨ã§è½åçã«ã¤ããåºãã¦ãããã®ãã¨ããè¦æ¹ã§ããå¤ããå±ãæè¦éåçã»å¤æè¦çãªæ å ±ï¼è¦ãã»è§¦ããã»åããï¼ã¨ãå ããç«ã¡ã®ã¼ãå å容æè¦ã®ä¿¡å·ï¼å¿èã®é¼åãå¼å¸ãå èã®ããããªããããï¼ââãã®ä¸¡æ¹ã§ãã身ä½ãåãå»ã£ã¦ãã¾ãã°ãèªå·±ã¯ç«ã¤å ´æã失ã£ã¦ãã¾ãã¾ãã`, 138 `ããã調ã¹ãããã«ã身ä½çèªå·±ãããã£ã¨æªãã¦æ¸¬ãããã¨ã®ã§ãã対象ã¨ãã¦æ±ãã¾ããã©ãã¼ãã³ãé¯è¦ããVRã»ARã§ã¤ãã£ãæ²¡å ¥åã®ãã¼ã¸ã§ã³ã使ãã¨ããããã®ä¿¡å·ã®æéçãªåãæ¹ãå¤ããã ãã§ã身ä½ãææãã¦ããæè¦ãå¼·ã¾ã£ããå¼±ã¾ã£ãããããã¨ã示ãã¾ããä»®æ³ã®æãèªåã®å¿æã«åæãã¦èæã¤ã¨æææã¯é«ã¾ãããã®å¼·ãã¯ãèªåã®å çç¶æ ãã©ãã ãæãåãããã«å·¦å³ããã¾ããããã«ã身ä½ã®é ç·ãéãã¦èªå·±ã«ç´æ¥ã¯ãããããããã¨ãã§ãã¾ããå èããè³ã¸ä¿¡å·ãéã¶ä¸»è¦ãªçµè·¯ã§ããè¿·èµ°ç¥çµãåºæ¿ããã¨ã人ã¯èªåã®æ¬ç©ã®èº«ä½ã«ããææã«ãªããããããé¯è¦ã«åãè¾¼ã¾ãã«ãããªãã®ã§ããåãè«çã¯ãè¡çºã®ä¸»ä½æãââèªåãè¡çºã®ä½ãæã ã¨ããæè¦ââã«ãåã³ã¾ããããã¯æå³ãã®ãã®ã¨ãããããè³ãæè¦çãªåå ã¨çµæãçµ±åããåãã«æ¯ãããã¦ãããã¨ãè¦ãã¦ãã¾ããã`, 139 `ãããã®ç³¸ã䏿¬ã«æãã¦ããã®ããäºæ¸¬ç¬¦å·åã¨ããèãæ¹ã§ãããèªå·±ã§ããã¨ããçµé¨ãããå ã¨å¤ã®ããããä¿¡å·ãã¾ã¨ãã¦èª¬æããæããããããªåå ã«ã¤ãã¦ã®ãè³ã®ããã¾ãªãæè¯ã®æ¨æ¸¬ã ã¨æãã¦ãã¾ãããã®è¦æ¹ã大åãªã

A rolling stone obeys the laws of physics; a living cell, a robot, even a large language model seem to do something more â they hold themselves together and act toward goals of their own. Across this work I ask where that difference really lies, and whether agency is a property a system genuinely possesses or merely something we, as observers, read into it from the outside.`, 167 `My approach is to treat agency as something that has to be built and understood from the ground up, rather than assumed. Using artificial life â self-maintaining "cells," cellular automata, and Conway's Game of Life â we (my collaborators and I) study how the basic signatures of being alive can emerge on their own: self-organization, the maintenance of a viable internal state, and a homeostasis that, to stay adaptive, must itself stay dynamic ("homeodynamics"). These minimal model worlds let us watch a boun
167dary between life and non-life, or between an agent and a mere mechanism, appear from simple rules.`, 168 `More recently I have worked to make this intuition mathematically precise. Drawing on dynamical systems, information theory, and ideas like the free energy principle, we ask what minimally distinguishes a true agent â its own individuality, goal-directedness, and capacity to act on the world â from a system that merely behaves "as if" it had goals. The aim is a single, substrate-independent account of agency that spans the natural and the artificial, and that clarifies when calling a system an agent reflects its own intrinsic organization rather than just our way of describing it.` 169 ], 170 ja: [ 171 `ããã·ã¹ãã ããåãªãç©çç¾è±¡ã§ã¯ãªããã¨ã¼ã¸ã§ã³ãï¼è¡çºä¸»ä½ï¼ãã¨å¼ã¹ãã®ã¯ã©ããªã¨ãã§ããããã転ããç³ã¯ãã ç©çæ³åã«å¾ãã ãã§ãããçããç´°èããããããããã«ã¯å¤§è¦æ¨¡è¨èªã¢ãã«ã¯ããã以ä¸ã®ä½ãââèªåèªèº«ãã¾ã¨ãä¸ããèªãã®ãç®çãã«åãã£ã¦æ¯ãèã£ã¦ããããã«è¦ãã¾ãããã®éããã©ãã«ããã®ããåãã¦ãã¾ããè¡çºä¸»ä½æ§ã¨ã¯ãã·ã¹ãã ãæ¬å½ã«åãã¦ããæ§è³ªãªã®ããããã¨ã観å¯è ãå¤å´ããèªã¿è¾¼ãã§ããã ããªã®ããã¨ããåãã§ãã`, 172 `ããã§ã®ã¢ããã¼ãã¯ãã¨ã¼ã¸ã§ã³ãã§ãããã¨ãæåããåæã«ããã®ã§ã¯ãªããããã°ããã ã¢ããã§ä½ãä¸ããç解ãããã¨ãããã®ã§ããèªå·±ç¶æãããç´°èããã»ã«ãªã¼ãããã³ãã³ã³ã¦ã§ã¤ã®ã©ã¤ãã²ã¼ã ã¨ãã£ã人工çå½ã使ã£ã¦ããçãã¦ãããã¨ãã®åºæ¬çãªãããââèªå·±çµç¹åãçåå¯è½ãªå é¨ç¶æ ã®ç¶æãããã¦é©å¿çã§ããç¶ããããã«ã¯ããèªä½ãåçã§ãªããã°ãªããªãæ常æ§ï¼ãã¡ãªãã¤ããã¯ã¹ï¼ââããããã«ãã¦èªç¶ã«ç«ã¡ç¾ããã®ããï¼å ±åç 究è ã¨ã¨ãã«ï¼æ¢ã£ã¦ãã¾ããããããæå°éã®ã¢ãã«ä¸çã§ã¯ãçå½ã¨éçå½ã®å¢çããããã¯ã¨ã¼ã¸ã§ã³ãã¨åãªãæ©æ¢°ã®å¢çããããåç´ãªã«ã¼ã«ããæµ®ãã³ä¸ããæ§åã観å¯ã§ãã¾ãã`, 173 `è¿å¹´ã¯ããã®ç´è¦³ãæ°å¦çã«å³å¯ã«æããç 究ã«ãåãçµãã§ãã¾ããåå¦ç³»ãæ å ±çè«ãèªç±ã¨ãã«ã®ã¼åçã¨ãã£ãæ çµã¿ãæãããã«ãæ¬ç©ã®ã¨ã¼ã¸ã§ã³ãââåºæã®å使§ããã¡ãç®çã«åãããä¸çã¸åããããåå¨ââããããããç®çããã¤ãã®ããã«ãæ¯ãèãã ããã®ã·ã¹ãã ããåºå¥ãããã®ã¯ä½ããåãã¾ããç®æãã¦ããã®ã¯ãèªç¶ã¨äººå·¥ã®åæ¹ã«ã¾ããããåºç¤ï¼ç´ æï¼ã«ä¾åããªãè¡çºä¸»ä½æ§ã®ç解ã§ããããã«ãã£ã¦ãããã·ã¹ãã ããã¨ã¼ã¸ã§ã³ãã ãã¨å¼ã¶ãã¨ããåãªãç§ãã¡ã®è¨è¿°ã®ä»æ¹ã§ã¯ãªãããã®ã·ã¹ãã èªèº«ã®å å¨çãªçµç¹åãæ ãåºãã¦ããââããè¨ããã®ã¯ã©ããªã¨ããªã®ãããæããã«ãããã¨èãã¦ãã¾ãã` 174 ] 175 }, 176 refs: [ 177 { cite: `Suzuki, K.
