That one rule carries the whole game. A shot fired down a corridor comes back along it, a shot fired into a corner sprays out at an angle you did not plan, and a tank that fires three times in a small room has usually killed itself before anyone else gets there. Rounds last ten or twenty seconds, the maze is rebuilt after every kill, and the scoreboard along the bottom keeps count while the Scrapyard tally adds up the wrecks. The single-player mode puts a grey computer tank in the maze with you; the two, three and four-player modes share one keyboard, with the key layout shown before every game so nobody has to memorise it.

This is JPTR's fan-made follow-up to the original Tank Trouble, the 2008 browser game by Mads Purup that is still updated at tanktrouble.com. It keeps the original's feel â same maze walls, same bouncing shells, same Player 1 on the arrows and Player 2 on E, S, D and F â and adds a third and fourth keyboard player, weapon crates with the classic arsenal (gatling gun, laser, death ray, homing missile, RC missile, frag bomb and mines) and a computer opponent for when nobody else is around. The build on tanktrouble.org is the HTML5 version served from this domain, so it loads in a couple of seconds on a school laptop and asks for nothing.

Tips

Fire once, then move: A shell lives for a few seconds and bounces the whole time. Two or three shots in a small room fill it with ricochets you cannot dodge, and the Scrapyard counter does not care who fired the shell that killed you.

Aim at the wall, not the tank: The bounce is a clean mirror off every wall, so a shell fired at a corridor wall at a shallow angle carries around a corner the other tank cannot see round. Long diagonals through the open middle are the best shots in the game.

Turn on the spot before you drive: Left and right rotate the tank without moving it. Line the barrel up first and then tap forward; driving while turning describes an arc that ends in a wall more often than not.

Crates are worth a detour, usually: A homing missile or a laser wins the round on its own. A crate on the far side of the maze from you and next to the other tank is bait: they get there first and you arrive in their sights.

","faq":[{"q":"What is it?","a":"A top-down tank duel in a random maze where every shell ricochets. There\'s no throttle to hold and no lane to steer down — you plant your barrel, drag back the aim, and let go. What starts as a few shamblers wandering into your line of fire turns into a wave that leans on the traps scattered around the map and the ricochets bouncing off every wall.
\\n\\n
That single mechanic — hold to aim, release to fire, and watch the shot bounce until it lands — is what carries the whole game. A shot that clips a wall at the right angle can clear a zombie it never had a straight line to, and working out those angles is most of the fun.
\\n\\n
How to play
\\n
Controls are mouse-only: hold the left button and drag to set your aim, then let go to fire. Shells ricochet off the arena walls, so a shot doesn\'t need a straight line to land — bank it off a corner to reach a zombie behind cover. Before a run you can pick from a roster of tanks with different skins, and the arena itself has traps built in — circular saws, spikes, and concrete blocks — that damage zombies on their own once one wanders into them. Combat builds toward boss fights, so it pays to save a few well-aimed ricochets instead of firing wildly the moment a horde shows up.
\\n\\n
Tips
\\n
\\n
Bank shots off a side wall before assuming a zombie behind cover is unreachable — ricochets are the whole point of the aiming system.
\\n
Zombies that wander near a saw or spike trap take damage without costing you a shot; herd them that way when you can.
\\n
Hold the aim a beat longer than feels natural — releasing early is the most common way to waste a shot on an empty patch of arena.
\\n
\\n\\n
Similar games on Tank Trouble
\\n
Fans of Tank Trouble 2 will recognize the ricochet aiming here, even with zombies standing in for another player in a maze. Instead of a shared maze, you get a mission: a stretch of open battlefield, a handful of marked enemies, and a minimap that tells you where they are before you can see them.
\\n
The feel is closer to a slow, deliberate shooter than an arcade brawl. You pick a tank, roll it across broken terrain, and look for an angle where you can fire before the other side does. Cover matters here in a way it never does in a maze duel â a ridge or a wrecked building can block a shell as easily as it blocks your own shot.
\\n
It suits a shorter, single-player session: load in, clear the marked targets, and either stop there or queue up another run with a different tank.
\\n
How to play
\\n
W and S drive the tank forward and back, A and D turn it, and the mouse aims the turret and fires. Zoom out with U before committing to a route so you know roughly where the marked enemies are relative to you, then zoom back in with I to line up the shot. You drag tank cards out of your hand and drop them onto a two-lane battlefield; from there they roll toward the enemy side on their own, and your job is picking which tank to send, when, and to which lane.
\\n\\n
A match plays out like a tug of war. Push down one lane and the opponent has to answer or lose ground; leave a lane empty too long and their push reaches your headquarters instead. Turrets along the way chip away at anything that gets through alone, so a single tank rarely makes it all the way to the enemy base on its own â it needs backup behind it.
\\n\\n
How to play
\\n
Drag a tank card from your hand onto your side of a lane to deploy it. It advances by itself, so there is no aiming or driving to learn â the decisions are all about timing and which lane to load up. Destroy the enemy headquarters before they destroy yours and you win the round. New players start against the built-in bot, which is the right place to learn how fast tanks close the distance and how much a turret actually slows them down, before taking a match online against a real opponent.
\\n\\n
Tips
\\n
\\n
Don\'t commit everything to one lane â it really is a two-lane duel, and an empty second lane is an open invitation for the opponent.
\\n
Send a second tank behind the first instead of one at a time; turrets punish a lone push much more than a supported one.
\\n
Play a few rounds against the bot before going online â it costs nothing and shows you exactly how much ground a push covers before it reaches a turret.
\\n
Upgrading your army between matches is part of the strategy, not an afterthought, since it is what turns a losing lane into a winning one.
\\n
\\n\\n
Similar games on Tank Trouble
\\n
Most of the rest of the site is built around driving and shooting rather than lane strategy. Between battle stages, you visit the workshop to boost hull armor, increase engine torque for steeper hill climbing, and mount devastating main cannons. Moving up through the campaign lets you unlock heavier chassis, transforming your fragile starting vehicle into an unstoppable war machine capable of surviving intense barrages.
\\n\\n
For visitors of Tank Trouble who appreciate calculated ballistic exchanges and vehicular combat, this title offers an engaging single-player progression experience. The tempo is deliberate yet demanding: you must balance continuous forward momentum with smart positioning behind defensive terrain.
\\n\\n
Controls and combat mechanics
\\n
Steering your vehicle and landing clean hits requires coordinating movement with manual elevation:
\\n
\\n
Drive and balance: Press A and D or the Left and Right Arrow keys to move forward or reverse across the bumpy terrain.
\\n
Gun elevation: Use W and S or the Up and Down Arrow keys to raise and lower the cannon barrel.
\\n
Fire: Press Spacebar or J to fire your primary cannon shell.
\\n
\\n
Mastering the recoil and barrel angle is essential when shooting over crests. Watch the dust kick up from misses to adjust your angle before the opposing gunner zeroes in on your position.
\\n\\n
Survival tips for the battlefield
\\n
\\n
Use ridges as defilade: Never sit exposed on the crest of a hill. Park just behind the ridge so only your turret peeks over, fire a round, and roll back down into cover during the reload cycle.
\\n
Prioritize dangerous targets: Take out enemy units with rapid-firing cannons or high damage output first. Eliminating heavy threats early drastically reduces the damage your armor absorbs per stage.
\\n
Invest in armor early: Extra firepower is tempting, but early-stage mistakes happen quickly. Upgrading hull integrity gives you the margin of error needed to clear difficult stages consistently.
\\n
Keep moving between shots: Static targets are easy prey for enemy artillery. A single well-placed shot into a weak pillar can bring down an entire stone fortress, sending the enemy tumbling down into the water below.
\\n\\n
For visitors of Tank Trouble who love quick-draw duels and single-keyboard skirmishes, Blumgi Castle delivers that same instant competitive thrill with a quirky, cartoonish artillery twist.
\\n\\n
How to play
\\n\\n
The control scheme in Blumgi Castle is streamlined so anyone can pick it up immediately. Player 1 uses the arrow keys or space bar, while Player 2 uses WASD on the other side of the keyboard. Single-player mode pits you against an escalating roster of computer-controlled defenders.
\\n\\n
To fire, press and hold your action key. A power arc indicates your projectile trajectory and velocity. Release the button at the peak of your aim to launch the bomb. Once the projectile makes contact, it detonates on a brief fuse, tearing through masonry, wooden beams, and metal supports.
\\n\\n
Tips for cleaner knockouts
\\n\\n
\\n
Target structural foundations: Direct hits on enemy characters often deal minor knockback, but blowing up the bottom pillar collapses the whole platform under their feet.
\\n
Master release timing: The trajectory line climbs and extends as you hold the button. Learn the rhythmic cadence of the power meter to consistently nail distant shots.
\\n
Exploit ricochets and chain reactions: Projectiles bounce off hard surfaces and can roll under overhangs to ignite secondary explosive barrels hiding beneath enemy fortifications.
\\n
\\n\\n
Similar games on Tank Trouble
\\n\\n
If you enjoy the projectile angles and trajectory calculation of Blumgi Castle, try Tank Stars for turn-based tactical tank warfare with specialized missiles. Two stickman combatants square off inside a compact arena, colliding at breakneck speed where every exchange ends in seconds. There are no lengthy combo strings or complex meter bars to memorize; success depends entirely on reading your opponent\'s charge and striking at the decisive split second.
\\n\\n
Because rounds resolve so quickly, the action creates an addictive rhythm. A single misstep gives away a point, but the immediate restart lets you jump right back into the fight to adapt your spacing and counter your rival\'s tendencies.
\\n\\n
How to play
\\n\\n
Before jumping into the fray, select between single-player mode against a computer opponent or local two-player mode for head-to-head competition on one machine. When playing with two people, Player 1 controls their fighter using the arrow keys, while Player 2 takes the WASD keys on the opposite side of the keyboard.
\\n\\n
Each round begins with both fighters positioned on opposite ends of the arena. Created by New Eich Games, this sequel expands on the chaotic two-button formula that made the original a staple of shared-keyboard gaming. Whether you are dueling against a friend on the same machine or facing off against computer-controlled snipers, matches unfold at lightning speed.
\\n
Each round drops two combatants onto an elevated rooftop loaded with random modifiers, distinct weapon drops, and environmental clutter. Ragdoll physics ensure that characters wobble, tilt, and stumble with every movement. A single clean sniper shot or explosive blast can send an opponent tumbling into the void below. Just like the arena duels in Tank Trouble 2, rounds are over in seconds, making rematch streaks easy to start and hard to stop.
\\n
How to play
\\n
Rooftop Snipers 2 uses a simple two-button setup for each combatant, focusing on timing rather than complex inputs:
\\n
\\n
Player 1: Press W to jump and hold E to rotate your aim, releasing to shoot.
\\n
Player 2: Press the Up Arrow to jump and hold the Right Arrow (or O) to rotate your aim, releasing to shoot.
\\n
\\n
Holding the shoot button causes your character\'s arm to swing upward in a continuous arc. Releasing the key fires your weapon in whichever direction the barrel points at that exact instant. Jumping propels your sniper upward while swinging their legs; timing subsequent jumps lets you hop across platforms or dodge incoming fire. The first shooter to knock the opponent off the rooftop five times wins the match.
\\n
Tips for winning duels
\\n
\\n
Hold to aim before releasing: Avoid tapping the shoot button blindly. Hold the key until your arm sweeps directly toward your opponent, then release right as the barrel crosses their torso or head.
\\n
Beware of weapon recoil: Heavy firearms like rocket launchers, shotguns, and grenade rifles produce substantial kickback. Firing while standing too close to the edge of the roof can throw you off backwards even if your shot hits.
\\n
Stabilize your landing: Repeatedly mashing the jump button will send your character into a clumsy tumble. Wait until your feet touch the rooftop to regain balance before leaping again.
\\n
Use obstacles as cover: Rooftops frequently spawn beach umbrellas, tombstones, banners, and bouncing balls. Position yourself behind these objects to absorb opposing shots while you line up a return blast.
\\n
\\n
Similar games on Tank Trouble
\\n
If you enjoy the direct competitive tension of Rooftop Snipers 2, try other local multiplayer favorites on the site. Taking control of an unlikely duo of escaped zombies, you and a partner must navigate a sprawling high-tech research facility filled with security checkpoints, automated defenses, locked doors, and aggressive guards. Unlike traditional zombie games focused on combat or survival horror, Zoom-Be turns undead escapades into clever team-based puzzle solving.
\\n\\n
The core appeal comes from the distinct physical abilities of each character. The larger zombie brings raw power, capable of kicking heavy crates, smashing down barricades, and knocking out patrolling scientists. In contrast, the smaller zombie is nimble and lightweight, easily fitting through tight crawlspaces, scaling high ledges, and stepping onto delicate switches. Neither character can make it to the exit elevator alone, making constant communication and mutual support essential from the opening stage to the final challenge.
\\n\\n
For players visiting Tank Trouble looking for great local multiplayer action, Zoom-Be offers a refreshing shift in tone. Instead of competing across hazardous arenas to blast each other, you work together to outsmart level layouts and coordinate your movements in real time.
\\n\\n
How to play
\\n\\n
Controlling both characters is straightforward, keeping the focus entirely on puzzle solving and timing:
\\n\\n
\\n
Big Zombie (Player 1): Use the Left and Right Arrow keys to move, the Up Arrow to jump, and the Down Arrow to kick obstacles or attack guards.
\\n
Small Zombie (Player 2): Use A and D to run left and right, W to jump, and S to drop through thin platforms or interact with objects.
\\n
\\n\\n
Every level challenges you to reach the exit elevator at the end of the floor. Along the way, you can search for three collectible stars tucked away in dangerous corners. Both zombies must enter the elevator alive to complete the stage, meaning you cannot sacrifice one character to trigger an exit.
\\n\\n
Tips for clearing difficult stages
\\n\\n
\\n
Use character boosting: Have the small zombie jump directly onto the big zombie\'s head. From there, jumping again gives the smaller character extra height to reach distant platforms or hidden bonus stars.
\\n
Let the muscle clear the path: Send the big zombie forward first whenever you encounter scientists or armed security guards. A well-timed kick neutralizes threats before the smaller zombie gets caught in danger.
\\n
Hold pressure plates: Many electronic doors and laser barriers remain deactivated only while a character stands on a switch. Leave one player behind to hold the trigger, then let the second player find an alternate route or secondary button to open a passage for both.
\\n
Time elevator entries together: Make sure both characters are fully aligned inside the elevator door before relaxing, as wandering outside the threshold can prevent the stage clear trigger from registering.
\\n
\\n\\n
Similar games on Tank Trouble
\\n\\n
If you enjoy sharing a keyboard with a friend, try out a few other multiplayer favorites on the site. Duo Survival 2 provides another excellent cooperative platforming journey where two survivors combine distinct tools to navigate post-apocalyptic trials. 1d Corners in Tank Trouble 2: How the Bounce Works and How to Use It",date:"2026-09-20",updated:"2026-09-20",excerpt:"The shell in Tank Trouble 2 reflects off every wall like a snooker ball. Here is how to plan a shot you cannot see the end of, and how to stop your own shells coming back for you.",thumbnail:"/thumbs/tank-trouble-2.webp",html:"
The bounce is a mirror

A shell in Tank Trouble 2 leaves the barrel in a straight line and, when it hits a wall, leaves that wall at the same angle it arrived. There is no spin and no loss of speed; it is a clean reflection every time, and the shell keeps going until its timer runs out a few seconds later. Everything about aiming follows from that one rule.

Corridors: shoot along them, never across

A shell fired down the length of a corridor stays in it, bouncing off the far end and coming straight back. That makes it a killing shot if the other tank is in the corridor and a suicide shot if only you are. Firing across a corridor into the wall opposite sends the shell straight back into your own tank. Turn on the spot until the barrel points along the passage before you press fire.

The shallow-angle carry

The most useful trick is the shot that goes round a corner. Aim at the wall of a corridor at a shallow angle â ten or fifteen degrees off parallel â and the shell zigzags along it, walls to the left and right, and turns the corner at the end because it is still zigzagging. A tank waiting round that corner has no line of sight to you and no warning. Long diagonals through the open middle of the maze do the same thing on a bigger scale.

Counting to one

Every shell you fire is a hazard for the rest of its life, and the game does not care who fired the one that kills you. In a small room, one shell is a threat to the other tank; three shells are a threat to both of you and the odds are even. Fire once, watch where it went, and move out of the line it will come back along. The player who fires less usually wins the round.

Reading the computer

The single-player tank drives towards you and fires when it has a rough line. It does not plan bounces, so the shallow-angle shot from behind a wall is the way to beat it: it will happily sit in a corridor while a shell comes around the corner at it.
"},{slug:"tank-trouble-2-three-and-four-players",title:"Three or Four Players on One Keyboard: Key Layouts and the Ghosting Problem",date:"2026-09-20",updated:"2026-09-20",excerpt:"Tank Trouble 2 seats four people at one keyboard. Which keys each player gets, how to start the round, and why a tank sometimes stops answering when everyone is pressing at once.",thumbnail:"/thumbs/tank-trouble-2.webp",html:"
Who gets which keys

The game assigns a fixed cluster to each seat and shows the layout on the ready screen before every match. Player 1 (green) has the arrow keys and fires with M. Player 2 (red) has E, S, D and F and fires with Q. Player 3 (blue) is on the numeric keypad â 8, 4, 5 and 6 to drive, 0 to fire. Player 4 (orange) has I, J, K and L and fires with Y. In every cluster the top key drives forward, the bottom key reverses and the two side keys rotate the tank on the spot.

Starting the round

Pick 3 Player or 4 Player on the title screen, then each player presses their own fire key on the ready screen. The maze appears once everyone has pressed. After a kill the maze is rebuilt and the next round starts on its own.

Seating

Four sets of hands on one keyboard needs some arranging. Put Player 2 on the far left (E S D F), Player 4 to their right on I J K L, Player 1 on the arrows and Player 3 on the numpad at the far right. On a laptop without a numeric keypad there is no seat for Player 3, so run a three-player game with Players 1, 2 and 4 by choosing 4 Player and leaving the blue tank parked â or simply play three with the numpad seat empty.

Why a tank stops moving

Most keyboards cannot report every combination of keys at once. When three people hold drive keys and someone adds a fire key, the keyboard may drop one of the presses and a tank sits still until the others let go. This is called ghosting and it is the hardware, not the game. It happens less when the cluster
1s are spread across the keyboard, which is why the layout above uses both ends of it, and it happens much less on a keyboard that advertises n-key rollover.

House rules that keep it friendly

Play first to ten kills and rotate seats after every game so the arrow-key player does not keep the most comfortable cluster. The Scrapyard counter at the bottom keeps a running total of wrecks, which is a good tiebreaker for the evening.
"},{slug:"tank-trouble-2-and-the-original",title:"Tank Trouble 2 and the Original Tank Trouble: What Is the Same and What JPTR Changed",date:"2026-09-20",updated:"2026-09-20",excerpt:"The maze, the bouncing shells and the Player 1 and 2 keys come straight from Mads Purup's 2008 original. The computer opponent, the third and fourth keyboard seats and the weapon crates are the sequel's additions.",thumbnail:"/thumbs/tank-trouble-2.webp",html:"
Where the game comes from

Tank Trouble is a browser game by Danish developer Mads Purup, first released as a Flash game in 2008 and later rebuilt in HTML5. Its rules are small enough to fit on a napkin: a random maze, tanks that turn on the spot, shells that ricochet until they fade, and one hit to destroy a tank. It became a school-laptop staple because two people can play it on one keyboard, and it is still developed under the Tank Trouble ApS name at tanktrouble.com, where it has online play and a dog called Laika who explains the rules.

What the sequel keeps

Tank Trouble 2 is an independent fan-made game by JPTR, built in Construct 2 and distributed on the big HTML5 portals. It keeps everything that made the original work: the maze rebuilt after every kill, the same wall-bounce physics, one-hit kills, and the same first two key layouts â arrows and M for Player 1, E S D F and Q for Player 2 â so anyone who learned the original sits down and plays.

What it adds

Three things. A computer-controlled tank, so there is a one-player mode that the original never had offline. Third and fourth keyboard seats on the numeric keypad and on I J K L, where the original's third player steered with the mouse. And weapon crates that spawn in the maze with the arsenal the original made famous â gatling gun, laser, death ray, homing missile, RC missile, frag bomb and mines â picked up by driving over the crate and fired with the normal fire key.

What it does not have

Online matchmaking, accounts and the shop belong to the original. This build once had a login and profile system through a hosted database that no longer answers, so those buttons are hidden on this site; the four local modes are the game.
