The activity of UKOLN between August 2013 and July 2015 is recorded in the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150731/http://blogs.bath.ac.uk

The first of these was quickly completed and the second concluded in July 2014. Unfortunately, the unit was no longer of a size where it could easily attract new streams of funding, a fact exacerbated by the loss of key staff. Among these was Director Liz Lyon, who moved on at the end of 2013 to the University of Pittsburgh School of Information Sciences in the role of Visiting Professor.
118
The fact that UKOLN Informatics had become dependent on a single source of funding, which was itself subject to annual uncertainty, was a concern to the University. With UKOLN's research interests being so unique, there was no natural home for it among the other departments at Bath, so the University explored options for transferring the remaining UKOLN activity to another organisation which might be able to offer a more sustainable future. While several avenues seemed promising, a successful outcome could not be reached.
119
It was therefore decided that UKOLN would withdraw from the Digital Curation Centre and cease operations at the end of July 2015. Our thanks are extended to the staff in the unit, who continued to work with great professionalism throughout these difficult times. This is of course a sad outcome for UKOLN, ending 38 years of continuous contribution to the information management community, but we would like to sound a note of hope. While the unit no longer operates, it has not been completely closed down. The University remains open to the idea of reviving it in future should a more sustainable basis for it be found.
120
Kate Robinson, University Librarian
Alex Ball, Research Officer, UKOLN
July 2015
121
122
123
124
The UKOLN Informatics Research 125 Group (IRG) delivered UKOLNâs contribution to the Digital 126 Curation Centre and an ever-evolving portfolio of research projects.
127
128
129
The Innovation Support Centre (ISC) 130 was a JISC-funded service that delivered technical development, community 131 support, and technical advice to Higher and Further Education.
132
133
134 135
136
UKOLN – beginning a new phase at the University of Bath
137
It is now timely to update on the developments at UKOLN. Following the recent radical changes resulting from the closure of the Jisc Innovation Support Centre, the UKOLN Informatics Research Group is beginning a new phase of activity as UKOLN Informatics.
138
We will be continuing our work as a partner in the Digital Curation Centre, progressing the development and deployment of the Community Capability Model for Data-Intensive Science in partnership with Microsoft Research Connections, completing the Immersive Informatics pilot Research Data Management training programme with the University of Melbourne, and working with the Library and other colleagues at the University of Bath on a range of research data management and public engagement activities.
139
Needless to say, its been an extremely tough time for UKOLN and the team, and we have greatly appreciated the messages of support from friends around the globe. Now we very much look forward to new opportunities and to continuing to collaborate with our colleagues in the wider community. We will be refreshing our Web presence in the coming months, so do keep watching this space.
140
Our staff page has been updated to list the current members of the team, who can all be contacted at their usual numbers and email addresses.
141
Dr Liz Lyon
August 2013
142
143 144 145 146
147 <img src="images/philip-bryant-2008-v5.jpg" 148 alt="Philip Bryant, first Director of UKOLN, speaking at the 30th Anniversary of UKOLN in 2008 at the British Library" 149 width="400" 150 height="289" 151 title="Philip Bryant, first Director of UKOLN, speaking at the 30th Anniversary of UKOLN in 2008 at the British Library" /> 152
Former UKOLN Director Honoured by University
153 154
The first Director of UKOLN, Philip Bryant, has been awarded an Honorary
155 Fellowship by the Senate of the University of Bath for his significant 156 contribution to the development of bibliographic management. The award 157 also recognises that his establishment of the Centre for Catalogue Research 158 (1975-1980), the Centre for Bibliographic Management (1980-1992) and 159 finally UKOLN (1992-) at the University created a reputation for excellence 160 in this field.
161
Dr Liz Lyon, the current UKOLN Director said, 'I am delighted to learn 162 of this award. Philip Bryant was instrumental in critical digital library 163 development areas which have directly influenced how we routinely use 164 online catalogues in all types of library today e.g. university, public, 165 and national institutions such as the British Library. Philip also initiated 166 the organisational mergers of Centres within the University which led 167 to the creation of UKOLN in the early 1990s, funded by the British Library 168 and Jisc. More recently, Philip joined Lorcan Dempsey and myself on 169 the stage at the 30th Anniversary of UKOLN in 2008 at the British Library 170 and we are deeply indebted to his foresight and dedication which have 171 helped to progress the key library infrastructure that most people take 172 for granted in 2013'.
173
Philip, who served as Technical Services Librarian to the Library alongside 174 its Librarian Maurice 175 Line, was noted for his ground-breaking research into library catalogues 176 which had a major influence on library planning for the electronic age.
177
Initially Philip worked with Maurice on several projects looking at 178 catalogues and bibliographic data, which led to the Bath University 179 Programme of Catalogue Research (1977-79). Philip became Director of 180 the newly formed Centre for Catalogue Research, funded by the British 181 Library R&D Department, in 1977. He then oversaw the Centreâs transformation 182 in 1987 into the Centre for Bibliographic Management in recognition 183 of the role the Centre was playing in the wider book world, both in 184 the UK and internationally. He was also instrumental in the recruitment 185 of Lorcan 186 Dempsey and Ann 187 Chapman as research officers. Some two years later, the UK Office 188 for Library Networking was established after a grant was made by the 189 British Library Research and Development Department (BLRDD).
190
In 1992 Philip oversaw the merger of the CBM and UK Office for Library 191 Networking into UKOLN before stepping down as Director some two years 192 later. Philip continued to work for the University of Bath as Senior 193 Research Fellow in Bibliographic Management. During this time he investigated 194 the quantity and subject matter of items for which there were no entries 195 in online catalogues in Higher Education and non-Higher Education libraries, 196 funded by Jisc and BLRIC respectively. After completing this work Philip 197 retired in August 1997.
198
It is no exaggeration to assert that Philip Bryantâs work on library 199 catalogues and their uses had the effect of placing the University on 200 the map of the library world. A series of conferences in the 1980s and 201 1990s on bibliographic management, online access to library catalogues 202 and networking digital information drew international delegates to the 203 campus. In 1994 the University Librarian, Howard Nicholson, reported 204 that Philip Bryantâs work during the 1970s informed a whole generation 205 of library managers about how students used university libraries.
206
Later Philipâs study to establish âwhether a national retrospective 207 catalogue conversion programme is justified and to explore the implications 208 of much wider access both to records and to actual collections so convertedâ,
209 as recommended by the highly influential Follett 210 Report, was of national importance (and international relevance) 211 at the time, and remains relevant today. In addition to addressing the 212 questions of how much retrospective conversion of research collections 213 had already been undertaken, what remained to be done, what benefits 214 would accrue to users from national investment in this conversion activity, 215 and what was the evidence of the demand for access to such material 216 which was not as yet being met, Philip and his colleagues investigated 217 the likely costs, methods of assisting the process, and sources of funding 218 that might be drawn on for carrying out such activities. The result 219 was the strategy for the Retrospective 220 Conversion of Library Catalogues in Institutions of Higher Education 221 in the United Kingdom presented by Philip Bryant, Ann Chapman and 222 Bernard Naylor 223 to the Follett Implementation Group on IT (FIGIT) in June 1995, which 224 resulted in additional funding being made available to libraries to 225 make more catalogue records available online.
226
As a leader Philip expected staff to meet his high standards regarding 227 the rigorous collection of data, use of scientific method and quality 228 of prose in all written reports and publications, and did much to widen 229 the horizons and experience of his staff who shared his outlook. He 230 saw the Centre as an integral part of the University and built strong 231 relationships with the Library, Computing Services and Statistics staff 232 in the Maths department.
