This is the third time we have evaluated\nour tomato varieties over the last 15 years to make sure we continue to grow\nthe best plants for you."}},{"id":"31vySpgMj6","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"We planted the tomato starts the last week of April into\nraised beds filled with primarily mushroom soil. If you remember, May was cold and wet. The tomatoes didn\u2019t grow much and I worried\nabout our project. As summer progressed\nthe heat gave them a boost and we harvested our first tomatoes in early\nJuly. We staked some and were vigilant\nabout removing suckers, and some we caged and were a little more laissez faire\nabout the side growth. "}},{"id":"QpA8Y8Yybo","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"We grew four \u201cpatio\u201d style tomatoes suitable for\ncontainers. None of which has grown over\nthree feet tall. \u2018Little Bing\u2019 was the\nfavorite, with lovely strong stems and delicious small cherry tomatoes. It has slowed down fruit production as the\nsummer is winding down, but it would be a great choice for growing in\ncontainers. \u2018Patio\u2019 is a small slicing\ntomato with excellent flavor. \u2018Little\nNapoli\u2019 is a Roma-style patio tomato, and while the tomatoes were very good, it\ndidn\u2019t produce enough to make a large quantity of sauce."}},{"id":"sfPOkAAvRG","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Of the Roma styles we grew \u2018La Roma III\u2019 and \u2018San\nMarzano\u2019. These plants we caged instead\nof staking for larger yield. In our\ntrial the hybrid \u2018La Roma III\u2019 produced bigger and more tomatoes, but the\nflavor was not quite as complex. The heirloom\n\u2018San Marzano\u2019 are lower acid, so tasted a little sweeter. Either are great for canning as they have few\nseeds, thin skins and thick flesh."}},{"id":"EmWNUgwGJt","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"We grew several novelties including \u2018Great White\u2019, \u2018Green\nZebra\u2019, \u2018Mr. Stripey\u2019, \u2018Cherokee Purple\u2019, \u2018Black Krim\u2019, \u2018Mushroom Basket\u2019 and\n\u2018Berkley Tie Dye\u2019. These seemed to be\nwhat tasters were most curious to try so these had the most reactions. As in our last two trials, \u2018Green Zebra\u2019\ncontinues to reign in the novelty category. \nIts flavor has citrus notes and is delicious in BLTs and mixed tomato\nsalads. \u2018Great White\u2019 surprised a lot of\npeople with its sweet fruity flavor. \u2018Berkley\nTie Dye\u2019 was also a standout in the garden and in our trial, with excellent\nflavor, and high yield. It did have quite a bit of concentric cracking but was\nmanageable. \u2018Mushroom Basket\u2019 was a resounding\n\u201cno\u201d and \u2018Cherokee Purple\u2019 was a disappointment in both flavor and yield."}},{"id":"7ji-3dy3Ba","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Almost everyone enjoyed
430snacking on the small-fruited\nones. \u2018Juliet\u2019, an elongated grape\nstyle, had high ratings, as did \u2018Sun Sugar\u2019, a yellow cherry. Tasters like the sweet flavor of \u2018Sweet 100\u2019\nand the novelty of the pink-striped \u2018Bumblebee Pink\u2019. Of the small fruited ones, \u2018Bumblee\u201d had the\nlowest yield- which might be a good thing. \nWe are having trouble eating all the other small ones. "}},{"id":"JK8dJP_4EA","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Of the yellow\/orange slicing tomatoes we grew \u2018Kellog\u2019s\nBreakfast\u2019, Yellow Brandywine\u2019 and \u2018Amana Orange\u2019. \u2018Kellog\u2019s Breakfast\u2019 makes the largest\ntomatoes, and all had a mild, low-acid flavor. \nThere was no clear winner. Our\nlargest category was the red slicing tomatoes. \nThere was more interest in tasting the cherry and novelty types so we\nhad fewer overall ratings on these. \n\u2018Mortage Lifter\u2019 was top-rated, \u2018Brandywine\u2019 and \u2018Celebrity\u2019 were also\npopular. "}},{"id":"harxSJ9Yj5","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"A word about cracking. Tomatoes can crack either\nconcentrically around the stem end, or radially down the sides from the top. Radial\ncracking occurs during periods of hot, humid weather and fluctuations of soil\nmoisture. The flesh of tomato fruits\ngrows faster than the skin can expand. \nPicking these a little green, or before an expected rainfall is best as\nthey can ripen indoors. They will often\nrot if left to ripen on the vine ripen. Concentric cracking is more common in heirloom varieties\nand is also a response to environmental conditions of heavy rainfall. Again,\nyou can harvest and use these tomatoes if picked before they are fully ripe. Anything oozing or foul-smelling should be\npitched. "}},{"id":"Aj1wHjC2Va","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"To prevent cracking, supplement calcium with either a foliar\nspray or add lime or bonemeal to the soil. Ensuring even watering is key- but\nthis summer that was easier said than done. Many local farmers that grow\ntomatoes for market grow them in high tunnels under plastic, and irrigate with\ndrip lines to maintain even moisture. Or just pick crack-resistant varieties. Thicker skins gave \u2018Celebrity\u2019, \u2018Early Girl\u2019,\n\u20184th of July\u2019, \u2018Big Brandy\u2019, and \u2018Supersonic\u2019 superior resistance to\ncracking. Supplementing with extra\ncalcium also helps prevent blossom-end rot. \nWhile not technically a disease, these blackened, leathery patches on\nthe bottoms of tomatoes occur when plants have fluctuations in moisture making\ncalcium uptake difficult. Thus, giving my two teenagers a break from\nmowing, until it springs back to life after some nice restorative showers. Hot, sticky work usually done by hand, but no\none ever said farming was easy."}},{"id":"G3hmkbPDjL","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"We had our first taste of delicious local sweet corn a few\nweeks ago and the field corn is now mostly pollinated just soaking up the sun\nand rain to fill out each ear. I\u2019m growing my tomatoes in containers this summer\nas an unfettered groundhog made a mess of the family garden down at my brother\u2019s\nhouse. It\u2019s working better than I\nexpected- I have four 5-gallon pots filled with potting soil and one tomato\nplant per pot. I fertilized them\nliberally with calcium and potash and a little nitrogen when I planted them,\nwater them every other day and have been rewarded with several handfuls of cherry\ntomatoes, and 2-3 slicing tomatoes so far. \nI expect in a few weeks all the green ones will ripen and I\u2019ll have enough\nto can. Otherwise, I\u2019ll head to my neighbor\u2019s farm stand. Clipping them back by\nthe 4th of July helps to promote a bushy habit and prevent the\nplants from opening and flopping over in the fall when weighted down with their\nbeautiful blooms. Late summer blooming\nplants like \u2018Lemon Queen\u2019 helianthus benefit from the \u2018Chelsea chop\u2019\npopularized by gardeners in England. Trimming\nback the front half of tall perennials like the perennial sunflower, or towering\nback- of-the-border black eyed Susans like \u2018Henry Eilers\u2019 allows the plant to\ndevelop a nice habit and achieve a longer bloom period. Some are starting to go to\nseed, and others will rebloom with deadheading. \nThe baptisia are starting to seed and while the seed pods can be\nattractive, these false indigos can spread around, so I cut those back. Cutting\nthe spent flowers from salvias encourages a second flush of flowers. While the soapworts, amsonia and baptisia\nwon\u2019t send another round of flowers, tidying them up allows the other plants\nblooming now to shine. It is very drought tolerant and\ncare-free. However it is a Zone 10 plant, and I was pleasantly surprised that\nhalf of last year\u2019s plants came back. Around here,\noaks are the worst. "}},{"id":"jIFijm-sfB","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"According to the co-founder of the Asthma Center in New\nJersey, Dr. Donals Dvorin, oak trees can produce 1,000-3,000 pollen grains per\ncubic meter of air. Most hay fever\nsufferers develop itchy eyes, congestion and sneezing at pollen concentrations around\n200 grains per cubic meter of air. No\nwonder my nose is running. Maples, sweet gum, juniper, and pine trees are also\npartly to blame for hay fever symptoms."}},{"id":"EewaTmCgyU","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Watch out in the garden for skin irritants as well. Poison ivy is a known plant that causes\nsevere skin dermatitis in some people. \n\u201cLeaves of three, let it be\u201d is a famous mantra for good reason. The oil in the leaves and stems called\nurushiol, causes an allergic reaction 12-48 hours after exposure. While I am not a medical doctor, I am\nseverely allergic to poison ivy and EVERY time I garden whether I see it or\nnot, I wash my hands and arms up to my shoulders with Dawn dish soap. The detergent breaks up the oils from poison\nivy. The other great product I like is a\nmechanical scrub a customer told me about called Full Bore- it is a green paste\nthat really gets your hands clean and scrubs away any lasting oils. The worst case of poison ivy I ever got was\nin February on a warm day when I was pulling vines out of our dogwood tree wearing\na tank top. The vine hadn\u2019t leafed out yet, I wasn\u2019t sure it was poison ivy and\nI figured I was safe. I was wrong."}},{"id":"sLDtRQbO_r","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Other common plants can cause a skin reaction as well. Some\nplants produce essential oils or other chemicals contained in the glands in the\nhairs called trichomes that are released when brushing the leaves. This is a\nprotection from predators but can irritate the skin with a lot of contact. The\nbeloved geranium, tomatoes and roses are in this group. Plants in the euphorbia family like poinsettias\nrelease a sap containing latex when injured that causes a skin reaction in some\npeople."}},{"id":"D-iOL7CIzS","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"There are some plants that have sap that only irritates the\nskin when exposed to sunlight. Rue,\ncarrots and celery are examples of this. \nWe used to grow rue as it is a great larval food source for swallowtail\nbutterflies, but some of our greenhouse workers developed a mysterious burning\nrash after planting it and going out into the sunlight. We finally identified it as the trigger and\nstopped growing it, but still had several plants in our butterfly garden. A few years ago, a missionary was visiting\nfrom Ethiopia where it is commonly eaten. \nHe was so excited to see it he leaped into the garden and broke off\nseveral stems to eat. Just goes to show\nnot all plants that have skin irritating properties irritate all people."}},{"id":"RF1WtzTtaU","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"While my husband and daughter are not currently blowing\ntheir noses, my son and I are. My dad\ncan pull poison ivy by the arm load with no problems, my mom and I are very\nsensitive to it. It is spring in\nLancaster County, one of the most beautiful places on Earth. I\u2019ll suffer a\nlittle runny nose for the privilege of living here.
