Now What?","datePublished":"2026-09-24T02:20:00+00:00","dateModified":"2026-09-24T02:20:00+00:00","articleBody":"Living in the âPost-Yom Kippur WorldâFor one day, the body is asked to experience the exact opposite of what it normally wants, with the hope that we come away understanding our inner struggle a little better and enter the year with a new relationship between body and soul.Throughout the year, our physical desires can pull us toward choices that weigh down our pure and precious soul. On Yom Kippur, that balance is reversed. We deprive the body of its usual comforts and turn our attention completely toward the needs of the neshama. It is almost as if the soul is telling the body: Now feel what you have been doing to me all year. And then Yom Kippur ends.We eat again. We return to the physical world. But ideally, something has changed. The body still has needs. The soul does too.The goal is not to destroy the physical world but to bring it into alignment with something higher. Finishing Yom Kippur brings such a great feeling of relief along with it. We fasted. We prayed. We confessed. We repented. We asked for forgiveness. We made resolutions. We stood before Hashem and told Him, in so many different ways, who we want to become. And then the fast ends.We eat. The phone starts buzzing again. There are dishes in the sink. Work is waiting. Someone tests our patience. Ordinary life comes rushing back almost immediately. And sometimes, only a few hours after Yom Kippur, we already slip.We say something we should not have said. We lose our patience. We fall back into an old habit. Maybe we are challenged in the exact area we had just promised Hashem we wanted to improve! When the First Test ComesMaybe your first post-Yom Kippur test has already happened.Maybe you lost your patience.Maybe you spoke badly.Maybe you wasted time.Maybe you ignored a resolution you had felt so strongly about only hours earlier. And suddenly we wonder: Was all that teshuva even real?Yes.The goal was never to become perfect overnight. The goal was to become different.Do not turn one mistake into a reason to give up.Catch it.Fix it.Apologize if necessary.Make teshuva. And continue.Perhaps this is exactly where all those Yom Kippur prayers begin to become real. Not when everything is quiet and holy. But when life is loud again.Believe That Yom Kippur Changed YouNow, we must know that we are obligated to believe that our prayers and teshuva has been accepted and that a good decree has been sealed upon us. Thus, after Yom Kippur, we feel cleansed, renewed, and ready to start again. We have finished Rosh Hashanah, the Ten Days of Teshuva, and Yom Kippur. We said so many things about how we want to be better. But then comes the question: what now?One of the most important things we can carry with us after Yom Kippur is the belief that our sincere teshuva mattered. We asked Hashem to forgive us. We regretted what we had done wrong. We prayed for another chance. Now we have to live like people who were given one. That does not mean we will never make another mistake. It means that when we do, we do not simply shrug and return to who we were before. We notice it.We reflect. We correct what we can.We make teshuva again. And we keep going. If you stumbled the day after Yom Kippur, that does not erase Yom Kippur. It may simply mean that your first test arrived sooner than expected. The question becomes: What will I do with it now?Yesterday We Asked. Today We Act.Yesterday we stood before Hashem and asked for so much. For forgiveness. For happiness. For health. For life. For parnassah. For peace of mind. For closeness. For a good and sweet year.Today, our part begins. The holiness of Yom Kippur was never meant to remain inside the synagogue. It is supposed to come home with us.Into our relationships.Into our work.Into our
2conversations.Into the moments nobody else sees. How will we speak when we are tired? How will we react when someone frustrates us?How will we behave when no one is watching? Will we remember that Hashem is there too?And perhaps even more importantly: will we remember that Hashem believes we are capable of becoming better? You Do Not Need to Stay in NeâilahWe are not expected to remain in the emotional state of Neâilah all year.We are not supposed to desperately hold onto every feeling we experienced during the final moments of Yom Kippur. That is not how life works. The real question is whether we can take what we meant during Neâilah and translate it into ordinary life. That can mean one choice. One conversation. One mitzvah. One moment when we respond differently than we would have before.A new year is not built in one dramatic moment. It is built through small ordinary ones.So hold onto at least one decision you made. Then live it.From Prayer to BuildingThere is a beautiful custom that captures this transition quite perfectly: soon after Yom Kippur ends, we immediately begin building the sukkah. We move from thoughts to physical actions. From Neâilah to wood and huts. From asking Hashem for a beautiful year to beginning to build one. There is something deeply symbolic about that.We spent Yom Kippur speaking. Now we build. We spent the day asking Hashem to help us change. Now we show Him that we meant it by doing our part. After forgiveness comes building. That may be one of the deepest lessons of the days after Yom Kippur.Teshuva is not finished when we say, âI am sorry.âTeshuva becomes real when we begin to build something different. So We Build Huts? And now, Baruch Hashem, we enter Sukkotâthe festival whose central theme is simcha: joy. The timing is beautiful.Immediately after the seriousness of Rosh Hashanah, the Ten Days of Teshuva and Yom Kippur, Hashem gives us a festival centered around joy.We do not remain in fear.We do not remain in guilt. We do not remain locked inside endless self-examination.We move into the sukkah.Into mitzvot.Into happiness.Into trust.Into life.Into love.Hashem wants us to improve. He wants us to refine our middot, keep His commandments and become better people. But our relationship with Him is not based on the idea that we must first become flawless before He gives us goodness.A loving parent does not stop loving a child every time the child falls short.Hashem gives us another year, another Sukkot, another mitzvah, another chance to come close. Not because we became perfect.Because He loves us, believes in us, and wants us to keep growing. On Sukkot, we are enveloped in Hashemâs love. And we realize that it was never about earning Hashemâs love. It was always about realizing how deeply He loves us regardless, and how much He wants us to keep growing and coming closer to Him. Hashem believes in us way more than we believe in ourselves.Sukkah and BitachonEntering the sukkah teaches us a beautiful lesson. All year long, we live behind sturdy walls. We trust the roof. The locks. The job.The security cameras. The savings. The structures we have built around ourselves. Then Hashem tells us to leave the house and sit in a fragile hut.We leave our sturdy walls and step into something flimsy and temporary. Its roof is made of branches. And somehow, inside that vulnerability, we are reminded of something we may forget all year:The walls were never what protected us.Hashem did.The sukkah asks us to step outside our comfort zone and recognize where our security has really been coming from all along. It was Hashem.A Divine Gift It is also important to know that these days between Yom Kippur and Sukkot serve as a correction for the year that passed. Hashem is pouring chessed upon us by keeping us busy with mitzvot so that we do not fall into sin.Remember this rule for life: being busy is a blessing.Right away, we begin building the sukkah. We buy groceries. We prepare for Yom Tov. These days are extremely important. Hashem, of course, wrote good things for us during these holy days, when we were elevated almost like angels. Now, in a sense, we are being tested: Was it real? Do our actions align with our words and with the person we said we want to become?Show Hashem that your actions reflect what you prayed for; what you promised during the Days of Judgment is truly what you want and what you are working toward, so that the beautiful year we asked for remains sealed for good!Hashem is giving us another chance to fix, another opportunity to make this year better. Show Him that you are becoming better, that your words were sincere, and that your actions are beginning to match them.Tremendous Blessings Coming Your WayThese days are a tremendous opportunity to draw down miracles from above. According to the holy Zohar, the light of Yom Kippur remains with us as we move toward Sukkot, and during this period there is no cheshbon avonot, which means our sins and misdeeds are not being counted. Our chataâim and avonot (sins) are among the things that can block our prayers, but during these special and rare days, that barrier does not stand in the way. Rishon LeCheshbon Avonot, the beginning of the counting of our sins, begins on the first day of Sukkot. But why?Rabbi Shlomo Farhi explains:A chacham taught us that the prosecutor in Shamayim comes before Hashem and says, âYour children sinned.âThen Michael, the defending angel of the Jewish people, comes forward and says, âDo You know why they sinned? Because the Yetzer Hara convinced them that the aveirah was actually a mitzvah.âImagine someone talking in shul, and another person turns around and says, âShhh!â He may think he is doing a mitzvah by protecting the sanctity of the shul, without realizing that the way he humiliates the other person could itself be a serious aveirah. So Michael argues: âSatan, do you know
2why the Jewish people sinned? Because you fooled them.âThe Gemara teaches that a person does not sin unless a spirit of foolishness enters him.The Satan responds to Borei Olam: âCome onâYou really believe that? They sinned because they thought it was a mitzvah? The Jewish people are not stupid. They are not naive.âHashem says, in effect, âLet us see just how easy it is to fool a Jew.âCome with Me to the arba minim market. There, you see someone about to pay $400 for an etrog, while another one pays $300. For a lemon? The Satan watches his case begin to fall apart.Hashem is showing him: âLook at these people all getting ripped off.âIt is not simply that they are too busy to sin. It is what they are busy doing that changes the picture. They are occupied with mitzvot. And because of the spiritual power of these days, Hashem wipes away the aveirot that the Yetzer Hara led us into.So use this beautiful opportunity to pray. Pray for everything. Say Tehillim. Speak to Hashem from your heart. Ask for your soulmate, happiness, peace, shalom bayit, parnassah, and whatever else you need. Be happy, believe in the power of these days, and pour your heart out to Hashem! But more than that, Rabbi Farhi gives us a powerful lesson to take into the new year. Why do we do aveirot?Rabbi Shlomo of Radomsk explains that one of the strongest defenses a person has in Shamayim is that we often sin because we do not recognize the aveirah for what it really is. Either we think it is not such a big deal, or we think it is actually a mitzvah. And that should change the way we look at our decisions this year. We do not want to reach back for the same dirty clothes we finally took off on Yom Kippur. So when something seems like a good thing, ask yourself again: Is there any part of this that may not be a Kiddush Hashem? Is any part of it coming from a negative place rather than a positive one?You still need to do the mitzvah. Take the earlier example: it is a mitzvah not to speak in shul, and it can be a mitzvah to get someone else to stop talking. But stop and think: How can I do this without coming to an aveirah while trying to do something good? The Yetzer Hara can get you twice: either by telling you not to correct him at all, or by telling you to correct him in a gross, obvious, humiliating way.The takeaway is to stay in those fresh clothes from Yom Kippur by remembering that one of the Yetzer Haraâs greatest tricks is dressing up an aveirah as something other than what it really isâeither making it seem less serious than it is, or making it look like a Mitzvah. The Same Routine, a Different YouAnd now we return to the regular routine. We can even see this in our prayers. We went from Elul, with so many requests to be inscribed in the good books, to Rosh Hashanah, where we crowned the King, and now we return to the regular Amidah just like that. But the truth is, that is beautiful. Now we have the chance, in ordinary life and with ordinary responsibilities, to be better. To do better. To show Hashem that we know He is always watching, that we want to make Him proud, create a Kiddush Hashem, and make this world a better place.Hashem, like a loving parent, gives us far more than we deserve. Of course, He wants us to be good, to have good middot, and to keep his Torah and commandments, because it is genuinely good for us to do so. But Hashem continues to believe in us. Even when we have not done our absolute best, He continues to give to us, just as a loving parent continues to give to a child who has not behaved perfectly. So tell Hashem:I am ready to begin a new and beautiful year with You. I believe You have forgiven me. I believe I have been given the chance to start again. And I believe in myselfâthat I can become better. There is a beautiful quote I saw that captures this perfectly:âMaybe the holiest thing we can do after Yom Kippur is let Yom Kippur end. Let the world come back. Let ordinary life begin again. And build something so beautiful with what happened between us and Hashem that one day of closeness becomes a life together.âSo Remember: One Thing at a Time Makes a Big DifferenceYou do not need to transform your entire life in one day.Keep one commitment.Say one bracha with more attention.Stop yourself once before saying something you may regret.Be a little more patient at home.Do one mitzvah with more care.Give someone more kindness than you normally would.Pause before reacting.Remember Hashem once in a moment when you usually forget. That is how a beautiful year is built.Yesterday, we asked Hashem for one.Today, we begin living it.The person who stood before Hashem on Yom Kippur is the same person standing in the kitchen, sitting at the office, driving in the car and dealing with ordinary frustrations today. And Hashem is there too.","description":"Where teshuva becomes real.","articleSection":"Sukkot","timeRequired":"PT14m","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Yam Sarah Kohen","url":"https://www.hidabroot.com/writer/62677"},"publisher":{"@type":"Organization","name":"Hidabroot","logo":{"@type":"ImageObject","url":"https://www.hidabroot.com/themes/HDB/images/logo.png","width":245,"height":82},"sameAs":["https://www.facebook.com/hidabroot","https://www.youtube.com/@Hidabroot","https://www.instagram.com/hidabroot/","https://www.hidabroot.org/"]},"image":{"@type":"ImageObject","url":"https://storage.hidabroot.com/articles_new/126a5f95-723a-4717-b857-cc4c823176fc_tumb_1200X675.webp","width":1200,"height":675}} 3

Why do we do aveirot?

Rabbi Shlomo of Radomsk explains that one of the strongest defenses a person has in Shamayim is that we often sin because we do not recognize the aveirah for what it really is. Either we think it is not such a big deal, or we think it is actually a mitzvah.

29And that should change the way we look at our decisions this year. We do not want to reach back for the same dirty clothes we finally took off on Yom Kippur.

So when something seems like a good thing, ask yourself again: Is there any part of this that may not be a Kiddush Hashem? Is any part of it coming from a negative place rather than a positive one?

You still need to do the mitzvah. Take the earlier example: it is a mitzvah not to speak in shul, and it can be a mitzvah to get someone else to stop talking. But stop and think: How can I do this without coming to an aveirah while trying to do something good?

The Yetzer Hara can get you twice: either by telling you not to correct him at all, or by telling you to correct him in a gross, obvious, humiliating way.

The takeaway is to stay in those fresh clothes from Yom Kippur by remembering that one of the Yetzer Haraâs greatest tricks is dressing up an aveirah as something other than what it really isâeither making it seem less serious than it is, or making it look like a Mitzvah.

The Same Routine, a Different You

And now we return to the regular routine.
