You will need to pay for parking at the attached garage though. Silver Hand Games will be running 2 Sluggy Freelance games in the playtest/demo area located in the main food court. 'Dimension of G.A.M.E.' is a cooperative survival game where players work together to collect junk so they can fix their broken DFA and escape before being overwhelmed by a horde of ghouls!... (Awesome!!!!) And 'Don’t Be First' is a competitive score-counting game where players compete to be the second person to go out. Because the first one out is Bun-bun. What, you legit-won? Bun-bun's gonna to steal it and be first. Better to be second, and don't make eye-contact. Ka-Click!

I should be there by 2pm and be joining in playtest games until around 6, I think, if you wanted to stop by and say hi!

My First Gen-Con Was Also Last Minute Gencon!

First and foremost I want to lead with The Puppy Roll III! in the YouTube Video My daughter Leah did the line drawn animatics for the recap (which you can see starting around the 10 minute mark) and she actually

Man, I’ve done a lot in t he nerd-o-sphere for almost 30 years and Felicia Day never applauded for me! Well played Leah! Puppy Roll is a charity event for doggos and pets of all kinds helmed by the great and wonderful Anjali Bhimani! You should all check it out.

Leah has been doing a lot freelance illustration and storyboard work as of late. She’s always on the lookout for more projects, and says to ’let her know if anyone has leads on anything cool’. (You can see more of Leah’s work here: https://apricattart.carrd.co )

As for me, with 30 days notice of going to my first Gen Con it was overwhelming! I managed to succeed in my personal goals of meeting the Dungeon Dudes and seeing the Glass Cannon Network’s live show Thursday night at the Athenaeum. Sidenote: it was amazing! the in-person energy is fantastic. I highly reccomend it if you’ve enjoyed any GCN content! I'm trying for the Saturday Philly Show if i can make it.

As things turned out I was first in line for the Dungeon Dudes Ghostfire Games signing event, because the Puppy Roll had just let out and I had an hour and nowhere to be. So, as I stewed for an hour trying to come up with a plan to NOT be awkward, my introvert social anxiety was on full display and I was intensely awkward with the Dungeon Dudes team. They were kind and very gracious and I especially wanted a shout out to Joe O’Gorman for calming my stress down and just earnestly connecting with me as a fan. Thanks Joe! IGNATIOUS!!!!

So, going back to the Glass Cannon Network, I wanted to pick up their Get In the Trunk Delta Green dice because I’m so in to the Impossible Landscapes actual play they did a few years ago. And the gamemaster of that, Joe O’Brien, was about to run a Gauntlet Game at the booth. I just wanted to say how much I appreciated the wrangling he had to do as a gamemaster for that, and we had a great conversation. He put me totally at ease. Thanks Joe O’Brian!

So my take-away is Joe O’s are the best people. Sorry Joe Sunday. If you were Joe O’Sunday you’d be cooler.

BTW yes there was a tornado warning and some rain came through the roof, but that was small potatoes compared to the Joe-O’s and the Puppy Roll! And yes, I spent too much on games and dice.

Hey Defenders, check out the blog to see a photo or two from the event!

[â] Disarmed and Booked

Posted 22 Feb 2026 Comments (5) (Permalink)

Disarmed?

OK that's exaggerated for flavor. I've had a roller coaster of issues with my drawing arm (the r
340ight one for those keeping track) the last couple of weeks. From debilitating pain in neck and shoulder blade turning into weakness and numbness in my hand and arm specifically triggering and inflaming when at keyboard or drawing table. After a slew of medications and exercises it's still not better, but I've pretty much confirmed it's a pinched ulnar nerve. We still haven't pinned down the pinch. Not elbow, so either neck, shoulder, or collarbone. As soon as the snow clears I'll return to my plague-doctor-masked physicians and look into physical therapy. I'm working slow and numbly but glad to be back to work!

Snowmaggedon

We've got a big blizzard forecasted. The weight of the snow and the heavy winds mean there's a non-negligible chance that I'll lose power for a large bit. That will of course interrupt comic output. Just a head's up.

So my arm sucks and the weather sucks but there is a piece of GREAT news!

Book 24 in my hands!!!

This book is huge! It contains everything from Chapter 66 The Road to Bjorkea, Chapter 67 Full House, and Chapter 68 The Circle! At 336 pages it beats Book 21 4U City Red as the largest single Sluggy Freelance book ever! Larger than Megatome 01 and just a few pages less than Megatome 02!

The next step is to get these books out to eligible Defenders*, and once that’s done we’ll open the Sluggy Store for a limited time with a limited run, just as we've done for the last few books. I’ll give specifics as it gets closer but probably the store will open late March. *Eligible Defenders are actively subscribing at level 4 or higher when a new Sluggy book comes out, and you have been at that level for at least three months, then the book will be mailed to you at no extra cost.

[â] My Two Weeks Away

Posted Oct 27, 2025 (Permalink)

I'm still suffering with the fact that everything I try to do takes longer than it used to. But the books need to get done and the Pawnz and Bookmarks need to get made, and the last few chapters of the Sluggy Freelance story need to be told, so I'll keep on keeping on!

Week 1:

The first week away from the strip, I decided to prioritize Book 24. There's always the goal post of a 'New Book for Christmas' but this was such a late start that I was pretty sure I'd miss it again. What I didn't expect was how smoothly everything went. The normal pitfalls never manifested. This will be, I think, the longest Sluggy Freelance single (non-Megatome) book yet. But it laid out easily, the bonus art and content were all easy to fine, the spot images were a piece of cake, and the 5-page bonus story was scripted and half the art done all in that first week!

I still have to finish the other half of the art, and design a cover and title page, and there's a lot of content to cleanup throughout the book. We're not making December with this book, but I'm feeling confident for January or February.

Week 2:

The Second week I wanted to shift to scripting. I really wanted to be more tightly prepared for Chapter 75 because there is going to be a lot of defining content in it. I'm now in a good place for Chapter 75: Blood & Bone. For those of you keeping watch on the approaching end of Sluggy Freelance, I felt I needed to break Chapter 75 out of Chapter 74: Monstrous, because that chapter was becoming unwieldy to me. But if things work out (and when have they not? (Don't answer that)) Chapter 77 should be the end.

A Future Week 3?:

What I never got to was the WAY-TOO-LONG backlog of Pawnz and Bookmarks. Once the story is underway and the book is of to the printer, I may take another week off from the daily strip to focus on that. I appreciate all of your patience with me when I take this time away from the main strip. I dislike doing it but its one of the few tricks in my tool box that provides undeniable results. That's all for now! Stay nifty everyone!

341
342
343

344

Above is a non-spoiler piece of art from Sluggy Freelance Book 24 FULL HOUSE Bonus Story. Its my birthday! I thought it would be a good time to point out my failures in life, because, I mean, you can't judge me negatively on my birthday, can you?

I'm sorry I haven't posted much beyond the comic lately but there hasn't been anything to report. I'm still falling farther and farther behind on Pawnz & Bookmarks and I need to get the ball rolling on Book 24 to have it ready by the end of the year. The problem I keep running into is it takes all my time to keep ahead on the scripts and produce two comics a week. I keep thinking 'as soon as I'm ahead a day or two I can dig in to the side projects' and it never comes. It's just harder and harder for me to create new things. This comic is still my passion and joy, but my head-meat seems to be getting slower at doing head-meat stuff. Wait, is head-meat not a good slang term for brain? Feels right to me!

Anywho, I keep trying to take a step back, think outside the box, and come up with a plan that works, but nothing has yet. There's one thing I KNOW will work and that's to NOT produce two comics a week. So I'm going to take two weeks off after the end of Monstrous (which is a
348pproaching) to see how far I can get wrangling Pawnz & Bookmarks, and Book 24. And then maybe I'll have something to report. That's my birthday wish for me! Be nifty to others, and I hope others are nifty to you.

-Pete

[â] Top of the Pile in early 2025!

Posted 20 Nov 2024 Comments (9) (Permalink)

I’m shooting for February and March of 2025 to get on top of the pile! What could go wrong? :)

OK, so I’m still working on the bonus content for Sluggy Freelance Book 23, Mohkadun. This bonus story (called, suspiciously enough, Family Reunion) is going to be very nifty and touch on some cool plot points. But life events and rewrites caused a delay of a couple of weeks on this project.

I was very aggravated when I realized I would NOT have Book 23 available to offer to you all in December for the holidays. But I’ve come to realize it’s OK. I fall behind sometimes. But I always get there eventually. I’ve currently sequestered myself in my office-cave and I have removed all non-essential distractions to work on this thing (and maintain the flow of new strips). It should just be a few weeks more, I hope!

What about the store?!? I was going to keep the store closed until the new book was in my hands, but I’ve decided on a different plan. I do have small quantities of some of the older books. I also have plenty of Megatome 1’s (Contains books 1-3) and Book 9’s and the Beanie-style plush Bun-buns which are still the best and you all should own one! So on the off chance anyone wants these in time for the holidays for any reason, I feel like it’s my duty to give you a chance to!

Sluggy Store Opening- November and December

The Sluggy Store will open around noon-ish Eastern Time on Wednesday November 27th. The store will close on Wednesday December 11th. I will push to get all international orders out first, but domestic orders might take a week longer to fulfill. I’ll have family invading my house at that time, so I’ll make them do some of the packing-and-shipping leg-work. So I’m just going to assume I’ll have it in hand February at the latest. The first batch will go off to the higher level Defenders, as always. But then my intention it to open the store AGAIN, early March, with stock of all the other books! It’s like Christmas in March! I know SOME of you will still have your decorations up! That's not my style, but I understand.

The Pawnz and Bookmarks Sitch

TL;DR: I’m behind on Pawnz and Bookmarks (as usual these last few years). I’m taking off a lot of February and March to get on top of that pile. I NEED to do this as the END LOOMS CLOSER...

So I’m over a year behind on sending these postcards and bookmarks out. Again. But now I’m almost a year behind on designing and announcing them! In January 2024 I was supposed to start laying out Mohkadun style Pawnz and Bookmarks and catch up. It’s perplexing to even me, who is living it, why I was not able to succeed on this.

I’m slowing down. It’s getting harder and harder simply keeping up with one-to-three strips a week, let alone moving the ball forward on something else, like books or Pawnz and Bookmarks.

I want you all to know this is important to me. I will get you what I owe you. I’m just trying to figure out how without sacrificing the comic itself.

What I’m going to try is to limit new comic strip releases in the months of February and March, and dedicating myself to getting on top of that pile. Sending out Book 23s and creating and distributing Pawnz and Bookmarks is going to be my focus at that point.

I tried this two years ago with subpar results. This time I’m going to task some friends to help me.

Once I’m past that I can focus on the most important thing. The comic itself. You’ve all put such faith in me to do right by it. And I must. Because it is coming to an end.

The End Looms Closer...

Sluggy Freelance will end in the not too distant future. I’ve mentioned this in more detail in the Defenders Blog. And I’ll discuss it here with you all once Book 23 is in hand. For now I’ll say it’s still at least a couple of years away. Two major stories beyond Monstrous.

This is why its so important for me to get on top of the pile and stay on top of the pile, early 2025. So I can focus on ending things right. By the way, those of you who became Defenders of the Nifty are the sole reason the strip didn’t vanish years ago. My appreciation knows no bounds. And all the non-Defender readers owe you thanks as well. THANKS for being the Niftiest.

Onwards and sideways, with, perhaps, a slightly upward turn!
Be Nifty to each other.

-Pete

[+] The End of 2023 and the Things Beside the Comic Itself

Posted 12 Nov 2023 (Permalink)

Can I walk and chew gum at the same time? I sure couldn't during Immortal King, but I hope I'll be able to with the current chapter. Its never been this creatively hard before. Not by miles. Since this is the only time it's happened to this extreme degree, I'm chalking it up to a fluke, but we don't want a repeat of that. I'll be aware of this as I begin layout of Sluggy Freelance Book 23 Mohkadun.

Sluggy Freelance Store: When the store opens (hopefully in the next week or two) I'll have a bunch of BOOK 22's on hand for you to purchase as well as small quantities of all the other books. For the past few years, I only open the store for less than a month around Christmas. I feel like this is, perhaps, less than optimal. But its harder and harder to run a store while keeping the comics going at the trickle they are so please forgive me on this for now. I may be outsourcing the store in the future. Then again, where do I find the time to organize that? (I'm such a dummy). Anywho hopeful store opens in a week or two, and I should have limited supplies of all books!

Pawnz and Bookmarks Catch-up: I was doing a good job on catching up on the Pawnz and Bookmarks I need to send out physically and digitally to Defenders, but there came I time where I felt better to focus on the conclusion of Immortal King. Now that were in to "lighter story" territory, I'm back to catching up! I'm using the Set Numbers established in the previous news story entitled "MAY 2023 CHECK-IN".

SET 4: 2022-09,10,11,12 Off to the printers! Mailed (starting today)! (ALSO DIGITALLY RELEASED)

SET 5: 2023-01,02,03,04: Being printed up!

SET 6: 2023-05,06,07,08: Upcoming!

SET 7: 2023-09,10,11,12: Upcoming!

SET 8: 2023-01,02,03,04: Design stage, Work in Progress, nothing to show yet- There's going to be a lot of Mohkadun Pawnz in 2024, so were going to start with the core pantheon.

In conclusion: With Immortal King completed, and with smaller scope and character stories in the future I hope to make headway on the things beyond the comics (Defender Rewards, Book production, Store) while maintaining 2 to 3 comics a week. I've been so busy, tired and stressed, I didn't think I'd have time to do anything celebratory beyond some kind of animated strip. But with the help of my family, we came-up with a design that turned everything around. Big thanks to my daughter Leah for helping me design, render, and then animate the 25th anniversary "statue" art. We're using it as the main-page-parallax, in the comic itself, and hopefully you'll be able to purchase it as a poster in the store! One of the many reasons for the store's delayed opening was I wanted to proof the quality of the poster and also have the product in hand before taking orders.

Thanks to Shirt Guy Tom, Joe Sunday, and my daughter Leah for throwing together last minute artist-trading-cards to help me celebrate the day. There are so many people I could have and should have reached out to, to join in, but as I said, this was very last minute. Maybe I can do something bigger for the 30th Sluggy Freelance Anniversary (assuming I haven't wrapped everything up by then and the amazing Defenders are still supporting the comic)!

Speaking of, five years ago I was almost done because the comic was not financially viable. I didn't know how I was going to complete the story, but it wouldn't be as a webcomic. You New 20+ Defenders changed everything. And that support kept Sluggy Freelance afloat through events like the pandemic.

Unfortunately, times are getting more difficult and thanks to my old brain, my creative output is a little slower. I still have so much more to do, but I need your help! Please consider becoming a Defender if you're not already. You pay per strip I make, at a maximum of 12 strips per month. At the lowest tier that's only $6 a month max. That's the cost of a single fast food value-meal for a month of Sluggy goodness. It really makes a difference! Thank you very much for your consideration!

Anywho, after my victory lap around my house (causing the neighbors to stop and stare), I'm back to the drawing board, literally! ;)
