We do this by building long-term collaborative relationships with artists, like-minded partners, our neighbors, and public lands throughout our region, such as the Bowtie along the LA River and LA State Historic Park.
833
We have been in Northeast LA next to the Glendale Narrows section of the river for two decades. Attention to the LA River has brought investment and change, both positive and negative. In 2012, we held a series of discussions with our neighbors to try to understand the impacts of these changes to our local communities, and particularly, the future of public lands along the LA River in the former Taylor Yards. This led us to a partnership in 2014 with California State Parks at the Bowtie, an 18-acre former railyard slated to become a park.
834
Our work bringing artists and cultural programs to the Bowtie site naturally led us into advocacy for equitable green space and protection of our community. We witnessed that when people came together for arts and culture, their relationship to land deepened.
835

835These experiences formed our values and the way we work, bringing art, environmental advocacy, and community power together to help us imagine a thriving and more resilient future for our city.
836
Our vision: Shared thriving and resilience co-created by lands, artists, and communities throughout the LA River Watershed.
837

838Clockshop was founded by filmmaker Julia Meltzer in 2004 and is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. In Julia’s words:
1177
“My great-grandfather came to Los Angeles via Eastern Europe in 1898 to escape persecution and pursue opportunity. The family business was watch-making and selling clocks. Eventually, with the partnership of his cousins who also immigrated, they opened a store called the Eastern Clock Company on South Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles â which later became the Eastern Columbia Outfitting Company, now a treasured art deco landmark in Downtown LA. I chose the name Clockshop to honor the history of the business our family built. Over Clockshop’s 20 years, I have come to see deeper significance in our chosen name: Clockshop takes time. We invest in going slowly, building relationships, and going deep with people and place.”
1178
For more than two decades, Clockshop has shown up in the same places, season after season, building relationships that last longer than any single project. We commission artists to create bold, thought-provoking, and experimental work that shapes our imagination. With our neighbors, we have fought for public land for decades.
1179
The Bowtie Parcel, an 18-acre former rail yard along the LA River, has been Clockshopâs flagship site since 2014. What began as an underused industrial remnant is becoming a park, shaped by a decade of community engagement, over $20 million in raised funds, and hundreds of free public events. The Bowtie has become a model for whatâs possible when artists, neighbors, and public agencies work together at the speed of trust.
1180

1181 1182
1183
1184
1185
Support
1186 1187
1188
Clockshop is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and relies on the generosity of government, foundation, and corporate support, as well as individual donors.
