The legend 69on the 70coin, 71K'ai Yuan Tung Pao translates as "precious currency of the K'ai Yuan 72era". 73The Tang Dynasty was a brilliant period in Chinese history. 74It 75was 76an era of great prosperity and artistry. The K'ai 77Yuan coin 78continued to be issued for the next 300 years, until the collapse of 79the 80Dynasty in 907AD. During much of the dynasty the 81coin was 82the 83only denomination struck. Because of the relatively low value 84of 85the coin and the high level of commerce a LOT of the coins were issued 86during that period. (Think of doing all your transactions with only 87pennies!) 88As a result the coin, though over 1000 years old, is still plentiful 89and 90inexpensive. 91</p> 92<p>The Chinese used the basic design of a round copper coin with 93a 94square 95hole for over 2100 years. The roundness of the coin 96represented 97heaven, 98while the square hole represented the earth, thus their coins were the 99perfect mix of heaven and earth. A more practical reason for 100the 101design is that the coins were cast. In order to remove the 102casting 103spurs on the coins, a square stick was run through the center hole of a 104group of coins in order to hold them. The spurs could then be 105quickly 106and easily sanded off the whole group of coins 107</p> 108<p>The origin of our use of the K'ai Yuan coin as a logo is 109deeply 110shrouded 111in the hidden mysteries of the past. I adopted the 112logo at a time when a substantial part of our business was 113dealing with Chinese cash coins. However after 114selling coins for over fifty years I cannot remember exactly why it was 115choosen.
