122
Regenerative tourism, new European regulations aimed at preventing greenwashing, and the growing adoption of verifiable sustainability frameworks are ushering in a new era—one in which traveling better will also mean communicating with greater precision and demonstrating progress more effectively.

123

124
Some journeys are remembered for a room overlooking the sea, a beautifully set table, or a road winding through the mountains. But the kind of travel that is beginning to define this decade is measured differently. Not only by what it offers visitors, but also by what remains in the destination long after the suitcase has been unpacked.

125
For years, sustainable tourism was communicated in terms of future aspirations. The industry promised to reduce impacts, offset emissions, respect local communities, and protect landscapes. Today, however, that language is beginning to fall short. Climate pressures, overtourism in some destinations, changing consumer behaviors, and a more informed public are pushing the sector toward a more demanding question: Can tourism help improve the places it visits?

126

127
From Reducing Impact to Creating Positive Value

128
Regenerative tourism is no longer just a concept reserved for inspirational manifestos or statements of intent.

129
Across destinations, accommodations, and tourism experiences around the world, it is increasingly emerging as a different way of understanding travel. It is no longer enough to simply aim to reduce negative impacts. The goal is also to make a meaningful, positive contribution to the places that welcome tourism.

130
Restoring ecosystems, strengthening local economies, preserving cultural heritage, distributing the benefits of tourism more equitably, and improving the relationship between visitors and local communities are becoming objectives that require planning, monitoring, and verifiable evidence.

131
This trend has not emerged by chance. In a world where increasingly frequent and severe wildfires, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, and growing pressure on historic cities have become part of the public conversation, travel itself is increasingly becoming a cultural choice.

132
The reality is that travelers are no longer simply looking to see more of the world. They are seeking meaningful experiences and, in many cases, a more authentic relationship with the destinations they visit. They want landscapes that are well cared for, communities that retain their identity and authenticity, locally produced goods, lower-impact mobility options, and stories that do not sound like little more than promotional messages.

133

134
The New Era of Sustainable Trust

135
In Europe, this shift in perspective has now found a new framework. Directive (EU) 2024/825, which aims to empower consumers in the green transition through clearer information and stronger protection against unfair commercial practices, can be understood as more than just a regulatory measure. It also represents a broader shift in the way sustainability is approached. From now on, sustainability can no longer rely solely on appealing language, green imagery, or vague promises.

136
Perhaps its greatest contribution lies not only in what it restricts, but in what it helps organize. In a marketplace saturated with environmental claims, requiring statements to be clearer, verifiable, and easier to understand helps organizations that are genuinely committed to sustainability distinguish themselves.

137
Sustainability communication is evolving from a marketing showcase into a form of accountability. And for the tourism industry, this shift is particularly significant.

138

138Few industries depend on trust as much as tourism does. We trust a hotel room we have never seen, an experience we have not yet lived, and a destination we imagine long before we arrive.

139
For that reason, if sustainability has become part of that promise, it must also become something that can be clearly explained, measured, and verified.

140

141
Biosphere as a Framework for Credibility

142
In this new landscape, the Biosphere Certified designation for businesses and Biosphere Certified Destination for destinations have taken on a value that extends far beyond recognition. They provide a framework for organizing sustainability commitments, highlighting verified progress, and enabling organizations to communicate their sustainability efforts more clearly—all while aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and an approach increasingly shaped by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria, where environmental, social, and governance performance is becoming an integral part of tourism competitiveness.

143
The work carried out by Biosphere and the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI) lies precisely at the intersection of global ambition and local reality. It is not simply about citing the SDGs as an aspirational framework, but about turning them into a practical conversation for hotels, restaurants, tour operators, public authorities, and entire destinations. It is a conversation that brings the international agenda down to the local level—to energy consumption, local employment, accessibility, culture, water management, waste, and the way tourism is governed.

144
Throughout this transition, sustainability ceases to be merely an adjective and begins to function as a management system. From this perspective, a destination is not sustainable because a marketing campaign says it is, but because it learns to manage its impacts, listen to its communities, plan using data, and communicate with transparency. Likewise, a business does not become responsible because of a statement on its website, but because of the consistency between what it promises, what it does, and what it can demonstrate.

145

146
The New Luxury Doesn't Need to Be Loud

147
The very idea of luxury is also beginning to shift with this new way of thinking about travel. It is no longer associated solely with exclusivity, distance, or exceptionality, but with the ability to enjoy a destination without diminishing what makes it special.

148
For a long time, luxury was associated with excess—more distance, more consumption, greater exclusivity, more isolation. Today, in many destinations, luxury is beginning to mean something different.

149
True luxury is increasingly found in a beach that is carefully managed to prevent overcrowding, in a forest whose conservation is embedded in the destination's decision-making, or in a city where local life still has room to thrive beyond the postcard image. It is also found in a table and a cuisine that honestly tell the story of the surrounding landscape, or in a hotel that does not need to sell its commitment to sustainability because it can clearly explain—with concrete actions, initiatives, and verifiable evidence—the measures it has implemented, how they are reviewed, and what it has learned along the way.

150
This cultural shift in the concept and perception of luxury helps explain why an increasing number of destinations are exploring more regenerative approaches to tourism management.

151
We are talking about destinations that limit visitor flows to protect their balance, initiatives that connect tourism with nature conservation, projects that involve local communities in decision-making, and experiences that encourage people to travel more slowly. These are not isolated initiatives.

152

152They are signs of an industry that is beginning to recognize that its future will depend not only on attracting visitors, but also on preserving what makes a place worth visiting in the first place.

153

154
Traveling Better Will Mean Demonstrating More

155
At this moment, the tourism industry finds itself at the intersection of two realities. On one hand, travelers are becoming increasingly attentive to authenticity, climate, meaningful experiences, and the impact of their choices. On the other, businesses face a regulatory and commercial environment that demands clearer information and more credible commitments.

156
Between these two forces lies a significant opportunity: to transform sustainability into a new standard of quality. That, perhaps, is the most important message—and the central idea—we wanted to explore in this article.

157
Sustainable tourism no longer belongs solely to the language of responsibility. It is now also part of the language of competitiveness, reputation, and desirability. Destinations that protect their identity, reduce their vulnerabilities, and advance through concrete sustainability actions and responsible tourism practices will be better positioned to meet the expectations of travelers who increasingly care not only about where they stay, but also about the kind of tourism model their choices help support.

158
Traveling to help restore the world does not mean turning every trip into a solemn mission or promising transformations that no single journey could ever achieve. It means recognizing that the joy of discovering a place can coexist with the responsibility of caring for it.

159
It means understanding that, if beauty is to endure, it requires thoughtful management, reliable data, engaged communities, continuous improvement, and transparency. And in the future of tourism, true sophistication may lie in returning to a destination and finding clear, verifiable evidence that meaningful work is being done to preserve and improve it.
